DESCRIPTION

In this brief report, the export trading feature for the 2012/13 coffee season will be reviewed where details will be provided on ECEA members and non –members export level, export value of each exporter and our coffee export destination in the global market and our coffee buyer; so as to furnish useful information and data on individual exporters export activity, the Ethiopian coffee market in the coffee world and our coffee importing companies. Finally, the main aspects and features of the coffee export trading business of the year , issues and matters that need to be mulled over and looked into in undertaking the coffee export business are provided in the summary and conclusion section of the report. Coffee export in 2012/13 jumped to 198,708 tons from 169,392 tons in 2011/12 showing a rise of 29,316 tons (17.3%) in volume. The export income totaled US$ 745.0 million which compared to last year’s income of US$ 832.9 million exhibited a decline by about US$ 88.0 million or 10.6 percent. The export income fall was attributed mainly due to the instability of Arabica Coffee price in the global market, the continued economic crises in the advanced economies and a sustained coffee surplus in the world market. Arabica coffee which comprises about 65 percents of the world consumption showed a significant price drop in the global market, plummeting by over 30 percent. As a result , the average Inter-continental Exchange (ICE) coffee price of New York, where the Arabica coffee traded is priced daily based on Colombia coffee trading, which was 180.60 US cents /lb in July 2012 ended at 123.43 US cents/lb in June 2013 indicating an average price drop of 31.7 percent. In general, the Arabica coffee price exhibiting a declining trend in the New York trading market, over the 12 months period of 2012/13, ended the year with an average yearly price of 149.74 US cents/lb. The average yearly price for 2011/12 was 215.17 US cents/lb, and the year before in 2010/11 the average yearly price was 226.62 US cents /lb. And in 2009/10, the average yearly price of Arabica coffee in the New York trading market was 134.43 US cents /lb.The average yearly prices for the last four years (2009/10-2012/13), therefore, indicate that the Arabica Coffee prices in the international market has generally tended to decline making the coffee price in the global market very unstable and unpredictable. This has made the coffee business risky and difficult affecting coffee farmers, growers, suppliers, traders, exporters, etc in coffee producing countries. Total coffee exported during the twelve months of period of 2012/13 is provided in the following table to observe the volume and value trend of each month. As Ethiopian’s coffee production has continued to grow and efforts are underway to improve the coffee quantity, the export quantity in F/Y 2012/13 has risen to a record level of about 200,000 tons. But, due to the Arabica coffee market instability and significant price fall of more than 30 percent compared to the previous year price, the coffee export income has declined to US$745.0 million, from US$ 832.9 million obtained on export of 169,392 metric tons.Due to the Arabica coffee significant price drop in the international market, coffee farmers, growers, suppliers, traders and exporters in coffee producing countries had a difficult and challenging time during 2012/13 coffee season. However, despite the snags and challenges in the coffee trading business, exporters undertaking their coffee export business under this unfavorable market climate and tough time have managed to export higher volume generating a considerable foreign exchange to the economy. The export income was, however, lower than the planned income of about USD$ 1.2 billion for the coffee season from the export of 288,000 metric tons.A total of 202 individuals or companies were involved in the coffee export business during the year, of which 83 (41.1%) were Et

2. Overall Coffee Export Volume & Value

Coffee export in 2012/13 jumped to 198,708 tons from 169,392 tons in 2011/12 showing a rise of

29,316 tons (17.3%) in volume. The export income totaled US$ 745.0 million which compared to

last year’s income of US$ 832.9 million exhibited a decline by about US$ 88.0 million or 10.6

percent.

The export income fall was attributed mainly due to the instability of Arabica Coffee price in the

global market, the continued economic crises in the advanced economies and a sustained coffee

surplus in the world market. Arabica coffee which comprises about 65 percents of the world

consumption showed a significant price drop in the global market, plummeting by over 30 percent.

As a result , the average Inter-continental Exchange (ICE) coffee price of New York, where the

Arabica coffee traded is priced daily based on Colombia coffee trading, which was 180.60 US cents

/lb in July 2012 ended at 123.43 US cents/lb in June 2013 indicating an average price drop of 31.7

percent.

In general, the Arabica coffee price exhibiting a declining trend in the New York trading market,

over the 12 months period of 2012/13, ended the year with an average yearly price of 149.74 US

cents/lb. The average yearly price for 2011/12 was 215.17 US cents/lb, and the year before in

2010/11 the average yearly price was 226.62 US cents /lb. And in 2009/10, the average yearly

price of Arabica coffee in the New York trading market was 134.43 US cents /lb.

The average yearly prices for the last four years (2009/10-2012/13), therefore, indicate that the

Arabica Coffee prices in the international market has generally tended to decline making the coffee

price in the global market very unstable and unpredictable. This has made the coffee business risky

and difficult affecting coffee farmers, growers, suppliers, traders, exporters, etc in coffee producing

countries. Total coffee exported during the twelve months of period of 2012/13 is provided in the

following table to observe the volume and value trend of each month.

Table 1: F/Y 2012/13 Coffee Export Volume and Value

Raw Data Source: MOT

As indicated in table1, total exported volume touching close to 200,000 metric tons was higher

than any time. However, as 196,118 metric tons was exported in F/Y 2010/11, the export volume

of F/Y 2012/13 compared to this export level only showed an increase of 2,590 metric tons or 1.3

percent.

In value terms, income earned from the 200,000 metric tons export amounted USD$745.0 million

which compared to the F/Y 2011/12 export income of USD$ 833.0 million was less by USD$ 88.0

million or 10.6 percent.

In sum, although the export volume was significantly higher than F/Y 2011/12 export level of

169,392 metric tons, the foreign exchange generated was lower than F/Y 2011/12 export income.

bags of 60 kilos, down 264,000 tons or 4.4 million bags from the previous year 2due primarily to

Brazil’s Arabica trees entering the off-year of the biennial production cycle, and to a lesser

extent, Central America and Mexico’s continued struggle with coffee leaf rust. Global bean

exports are forecast just below last year’s record, to reach 114.9 million bags of 60 kilos, while

consumption is expected to rise modestly to 114.1 million bags or 6,846,000 metric tons.

5. Coffee Export Destination

The 17 types and grades of Ethiopian coffees were exported to more than 58 countries during

the year which compared to last year, numbering 50 countries, showed 8 more countries export

destination. The European Union countries numbering 19 countries accounted for 53 percent of

the coffee volume exported and for 51.7perecent of the export income obtained during the year.

East Asia accounted for 14.6 percent of the total coffee exported and 14 percent of the export

income. Similarly, Middle East countries accounted for 15.8 percent of the volume and 16.6

percent of the export income, while North America’s export quantity comprised 8.1 percent and

10.4 percent, respectively.

The rest countries accounted for 8.5 percent of the export volume and 7.3 percent of the export

income in which Sudan accounting for 3.8 and 2.5 percent, respectively was the biggest market

of the remaining countries. However, Sudan’s import this year standing at 7,564.74 metric tons

was less by 1,484 (16.4%) compared to last year’s import of 9,048 metric tons.

One noted change or development this year is that Japan which imported 7,172 metric tons,

valued at US$ 33.8 million last year, significantly increased its import by 225.7 percent reaching

to 23,357.28 metric tons. The export value to Japan also showed a marked difference rising to

US$ 81.1 million indicating a 140 percent growth. As a result, Japan this year has become the

third largest buyer of Ethiopian coffees, after Germany and Saudi Arabia.

This tells that Japan could become a growing market for the Ethiopian coffee in the future and,

hence, there is a new need to undertake an aggressive marketing work to export an increasing

volume of coffees to the country. In general, as shown in the table 5 the top 10 countries,

mostly industrialized countries, importing 86.8 percent of the coffee exported during the year

accounted for 85.5 percent of the foreign exchange income obtained from coffee export. This

explains that the coffee market in these traditional destinations need to be strengthened further

and new markets be explored to mitigate the risk arising from too much dependence on

traditional destinations or markets.

7. Summary and Conclusion

As Ethiopian’s coffee production has continued to grow and efforts are underway to improve the

coffee quantity, the export quantity in F/Y 2012/13 has risen to a record level of about 200,000

tons. But, due to the Arabica coffee market instability and significant price fall of more than 30

percent compared to the previous year price, the coffee export income has declined to US$745.0

million, from US$ 832.9 million obtained on export of 169,392 metric tons.

Due to the Arabica coffee significant price drop in the international market, coffee farmers,

growers, suppliers, traders and exporters in coffee producing countries had a difficult and

challenging time during 2012/13 coffee season. However, despite the snags and challenges in

the coffee trading business, exporters undertaking their coffee export business under this

unfavorable market climate and tough time have managed to export higher volume generating a

considerable foreign exchange to the economy. The export income was, however, lower than the

planned income of about USD$ 1.2 billion for the coffee season from the export of 288,000 metric

tons.

A total of 202 individuals or companies were involved in the coffee export business during the

year, of which 83 (41.1%) were Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association members (ECEA) and the

rest bigger number exporters- 119 (58.9%) were non-members. The ECEA members accounted for

more than 80% percent of the total export value and non –members held the remaining 20

percent export value Share.

ECEA members export price per kilo was mostly below US$4 and only about 14 exporters had

exported their coffees above US$5per kilo. On the other hand, non-members export price was

considerably higher as more than 26 exporters had exported their coffees at USD$ 5 and above in

which 5 exporters had exported at a price above US$ 7per kilo. One exporter price even exceeded

US$ 9 per kilo, but the export quantity was smallish amounting to 21 tons.

Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association _

There is, therefore, a need for exporters to trade in better quality coffees so as to earn higher

price to their exports as Ethiopian rich original flavor coffees can be sold at a premium price if

better quality coffees are exported to coffee markets in the industrialized and high income

countries.

Coffee destination during the year increased by 8 countries compared to last year and Japan,

which was the eighth importing country during F/Y 2011/12, importing significant volume of

coffees during the year has now become the third largest importing country. So, more market

destinations need to be explored and an aggressive marketing work or exercise be undertaken by

exporters to seize the opportunities in the Japanese coffee market.

Regarding buyers, close to 290 companies bought the Ethiopian coffees. But, although their

number is large, 40 buyers held a share of 80 percent from the total exports and the remaining

250 buyers held only 20 percent of total exports. So, there is a need to make continued efforts by

exporters to find buyers that demand larger quantity with a better price. Also, the business

relationship with existing buyers needs to be strengthened and exporters should ensure their

customers that they would always meet or fulfill the obligations they entered in their coffee

contract sales.

In sum, exporters reviewing the domestic coffee and the global coffee market situations carefully

ought to learn lessons from the unstable world coffee market and their trading business, trade in

closely observing and understanding the world coffee market and always design new strategies

and ways to mitigate the impacts of the underlying coffee price volatility in remaining afloat in

the coffee export business. Exporters need also to observe the volume and values of the different

types and grades of coffee exported that fetch in a higher price in undertaking the coffee export

business.
