THE REAL TRAGEDY OF ETHICAL FAILURE AT A COMPANY LEVEL IS NOT ONLY THAT THEY OCCUR AND CAUSE SUCH SUFFERING; IT’S THAT THEY ARE PREDICTABLE AND PREVENTABLE LAPSES. Peter Collins Program Facilitator

Navigating today’s complex world requires leaders to be able to manage uncertainty in an ever-changing commercial landscape – know-how for effective decision-making in a disruptive world.

The Centre for Ethical Leadership understands the dynamic nature of leadership and the process of applying ethical reasoning to the challenges arising from social forces, personal crises, financial pressures, cultural change, and competition.

Today’s leaders face a world that is increasingly highly connected – where disruptive events from many different sources demand their attention and rapid response within complex performance frameworks.

The Centre for Ethical Leadership is dedicated to developing leaders. Leaders with the capacity to create expectations about ethical behaviour in their organisations that go beyond stated requirements in Codes of Ethics. The Centre seeks to challenge long-standing habits and deeply held assumptions to enable decision-making that reflects moral behaviour in leaders.

Our programs offer organisations and their leaders frameworks and tools for thinking through ethical issues and identifying actions that are both effective and values based. Leaders develop capabilities and narratives that enable breakthrough ways of reasoning through major organisational challenges and issues.

The Centre for Ethical Leadership was established in 2010 with the mission of building ethical leadership capabilities across the different sectors in Australian society through education, research and community engagement programs. Located at Ormond College, University of Melbourne, the centre is dedicated to researching the dynamic aspects of leadership and working with leaders to develop the know-how for decision-making that has impact and ethical potency.

The Centre’s programs target change at three levels:

• The development of individual ethical leadership capabilities of program participants

• Building more effective and more ethical cultures, systems and processes in the host organisations of program participants and industry partners

• Engaging our program participants and leaders from industry in ongoing cross-sectoral conversations and learning about ethical leadership.

The Ethical Leadership Program is designed to prepare leaders for rapid reinvention. It inspires action through research centric thought leadership and undeniable truths.

The program provides a framework and tools to develop practical ethical reasoning skills. Program educators provide coaching and mentoring throughout the course, and opportunities to practice and explore challenging current case studies through role-play.

The diversity and seniority of the cohort contributes to the lively discussions of the ethical issues that confront leaders. The discussions with peers, time for reflection and guidance on the application of ethical framing and the minimisation of bias and blind spots all contribute to produce exceptional outcomes for participants.

With business leaders today operating in an environment of unprecedented change, the program supports organisations seeking to develop and retain high-potential candidates for leadership roles and is aimed at:

• Executive Officers

• Directors and Associate Directors

• Project Managers

• Heads and Deputy Heads of Departments

Professor Robert WoodRobert is the Director of the Centre for Ethical Leadership, Professor of Management at Melbourne Business School and Honorary Professor, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. He has designed and delivered programs for senior leaders and consulted to many Australian and overseas corporations, including the Australian Defence Forces, Westpac Institutional Bank, Santos, PwC, Westfield, Saudi Aramco, Dow Chemical, Telstra, P&O Ports, and the Hong Kong Government during the transition back to Chinese rule.

Robert supervises a diverse array of advanced research in learning, contingent personality, leadership development and gender and cultural workplace diversity. In the ethical domain, Robert is leading a study into how values based responses vary from situational demands such as social pressure, personal investment and instrumentality. This research provides valuable insights into the situations that lead people into bias and blind spots in their ethical reasoning.

Peter CollinsPeter specialises in leadership development, facilitation and coaching and works extensively with leadership teams across the ASX20, overseas organisations based in Brazil, India and Indonesia, the public sector and Australian national sporting teams.

Peter is a regular faculty member of courses at Melbourne Business School and the IPAA. Peter is Director of Curriculum for the Vincent Fairfax Fellowship and has worked in the area of leadership and ethics for over 20 years. Prior to developing his own consultancy, Peter was a consultant at McKinsey & Co.

FACULTYThe Ethical Leadership Program is delivered by Professor Robert Wood and Peter Collins and complemented by guest speakers with extensive experience in both the corporate and public sectors.

The facilitators and support team combine experience in ethics and leadership development, together with the latest psychological research. This enables participants to be guided in the underlying mechanisms of moral decision-making and to personally explore the creation of leadership strategies with impact.

Guest speakers are seasoned leaders from some of Australia’s largest corporations who engage participants in real-world ethical problems to help expand perspectives and influence reasoned solutions.

THE PROGRAM EXPERIENCE

“The Ethical Leadership Program was an incredibly valuable learning experience. I learnt many practical strategies and tips which I have been able to apply directly to my work. I left the course feeling very inspired and enriched after two days of great debate and informed discussion. I would highly recommend this course.”

Sophie RyanChief Executive Officer Sony Foundation

“We are all confronting different types of ethical leadership issues, no matter what industry or role we work in. The two-day program challenged my thinking around ethical leadership and provided great frameworks to enable me to approach decision-making on complex issues, keeping in mind both the organisation’s and my own values. Being in the room with others from different backgrounds and experiences was of enormous value as this provided great insight into the types of ethical issues we are all experiencing, and provided a powerful learning environment. I would highly recommend this program to all leaders.”

Robyn BatsonGroup People & Development Manager Sussan Group

“Whenever we are making decisions, we are constrained by our blindspots. Our capacity for decision making in time sensitive and high impact situations is limited and good intentions are rarely enough. Leaders must have the capacity to understand their own limitations and potential blindspots and create the behaviours, systems and processes that enable them and their teams to avoid the traps that lead to suboptimal decisions.”

The course is structured within a framework to progressively develop moral understanding through to practical application to shape modern ethical decision-making.

Each program is capped at 20 participants to create an environment that encourages open dialogue and discussion.

The Diverse Industry/Sector CohortProgram participants benefit from the opportunity of engaging and collaborating with a diverse mix of leaders from a broad range of backgrounds and industries/sectors.
