OVERVIEW

• With social media (Facebook, Twitter, You Tube) growing daily web logs (blogs) or online journals are a large part of this growth.

• The number has grown to over 156 million public blogs in less than fourteen years.

• Blogs showcase, document, and describe the skills, jobs, lives, and events of the blogger.

• After completion of this short and exciting instruction you will join the blogosphere for the sphere pleasure of being online and collaborative!

Unit Objectives

At the end of this unit, you will describe what a blog is:– describe the different types of blogs – describe the responsibilities of a blogger – describe the purpose of the ETAAPCS blog – create your blog account with username/password – create your own ETAAPCS blog – post an introduction to you own ETAAPCS blog

Pretest

Take several minutes to consider these questions:• What is a blog?• What responsibilities do you have as a blogger?• Have you seen or read someone else’s blog?• Have you created an online account with

username/password before?

Blog Definition

• A web log or online journal• Maintained by an individual with regular entries of

commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video

• Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order• Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add

content to a blog• Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments

and even message each other via widgets on the blogs• As of 16 February 2011 there were over 156 million public

blogs in existence

Blog Definition

Blogosphere:• Collective community of all blogs • Since all blogs are on the internet by definition,

they may be seen as interconnected and socially networked, through blogrolls, comments, linkbacks (refbacks, trackbacks or pingbacks) and backlinks.

Blog Types

• Most blogs are primarily textual, although some:– focus on art (art blog)– photographs (photoblog)– videos (video blogging)– music (MP3 blog)– audio (podcasting)

Blog Types Personal blogs: • An ongoing diary or commentary by an individual• The traditional, most common blog• Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is

never read• Blogs often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a

way to reflect on life, or works of art• Blogging can have a sentimental quality• Few personal blogs rise to fame and the mainstream, but some personal

blogs quickly garner an extensive following• Some sites, such as Twitter, allow bloggers to share thoughts and feelings

instantaneously with friends and family, and are much faster than emailing or writing.

Microblog: • One type of personal blog is extremely

detailed• Seeks to capture a moment in time.

Corporate and organizational blogs: • A blog can be private, as in most cases, or it

can be for business purposes• Used internally to enhance the

communication and culture in a corporation or externally for marketing, branding, or public relations purposes

Club or Group blogs: • For clubs and societies • Typical use is to inform members and other

interested parties of club and member activities

Blog Types By Genre • Some blogs focus on a particular subject,

– Political blogs, – Travel blogs (also known as travelogs), – House blogs, – Fashion blogs, – Project blogs, – Education blogs, – Niche blogs, – Classical music blogs, – Quizzing blogs – Legal blogs (often referred to as a blawgs) – Dreamlogs.

• Two common types of genre blogs are art blogs and music blogs. • Mom blof- a blog featuring discussions especially about home and family • Splog- while not a legitimate type of blog, one used for the sole purpose of spamming

By media type: • Vlog- a blog comprising videos • Linklog- one comprising links • Sketchlog- a site containing a portfolio of sketches • Photoblog- one comprising photos • Tumblelogs- blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types • Typecasting (blogging)- blogs that are written on typewriters

and then scanned • Phlog- a rare type of blog hosted on the Gopher Protocol

By device:• Blogs can also be defined by which type of device

is used to compose it – Moblog- a blog written by a mobile device like a mobile

phone or PDA – Sousveilance- practice of semi-automated blogging

with live video together with text

Responsibilities of a Blogger

Privacy- • Blog is available for anyone to see• Be cognizant of what you write and present to

the world

Personal Safety- • One consequence of blogging is the possibility

of attacks or threats against the blogger• Sometimes without apparent reason

Defamation or liability- • Several cases have been brought before the

national courts against bloggers concerning issues of defamation or liability

Permanent- • Even though you can delete a post once it is

posted to the world anyone can save a copy of your blog posts

Cyber bulling- • It does exist as a means of extending the

playground
