Transport is one of the sectors thegovernment has placed a special emphasis onand its purpose in doing so is to strengthenUnion Spirit, unity and friendship of thenational people and to ensure paralleldevelopment of all regions. Thanks to thegovernment’s relentless efforts, the entire nationis now enjoying rapid development and RakhineState is no exception.

Geographically, Rakhine State hasnatural barriers such as rivers and mountainranges and therefore there was a great deal ofdifficulty in building roads and bridges.Anyhow, new roads and bridges emerge oneafter another and it is mainly due to strongenthusiasm of the people there for the interestsof their region. Now, construction of the An-Minbu railway has begun. Moreover, Sittwayand Thandwe airports are being upgraded toimprove the air transport sector.

For all-round development of the region, more and more basic education schools arebeing opened. In addition, arts and sciencecolleges and universities, universities ofcomputer studies and technological universitieshave been opened for the youths to be able topursue higher education.

Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday swore in a new govern-ment comprised mainly of members of his Fatah Party, but without representation of his bitter rivals from themilitant Islamic Hamas group.

The move underlines the failure of attempts to bridgedifferences between the two movements, which havebeen negotiating to form a joint government that wouldreunite the West Bank and Gaza and open the way forrenewed foreign aid. Hamas overran Gaza nearly twoyears ago, expelling Fatah forces. The governmentsworn in Tuesday will effectively only rule the WestBank. TEHERAN, 20 May—Iran’s Supreme LeaderAyatollah Ali Khameneiaccused the United Stateson Tuesday of promotingterrorism in border areasand using arms and moneyagainst the Islamic state.

Khamenei’s verbal at-tack is likely to disappointUS President BarackObama’s administration, which is seeking rap-prochement with Iran af-ter three decades of mis-trust. The Pentagon saidhis comments were “terri-

Khamenei was speakingin a western region closeto Iraq where securityforces often clash withKurdish separatist rebels.Iran has also in the pastaccused its Western foes ofseeking to destabilize it bybacking militants on itsborders.

“I say this firmly thatunfortunately across ourborders, our western bor-

ders, the Americans arebusy making a conspiracy, they are busy fostering ter-rorism,” he said, referringto the US presence in Iraq,Iran’s western neighbour.

“Money, arms and or-ganization ... are beingused by the Americansdirectly across our west-ern borders in order tofight the Islamic Repub-lic’s system. We shouldbe awake,” he said dur-ing a visit to Iran’sKurdistan Province.

Turkey blamed for loomingcrop ‘disaster’ in Iraq

BAGHDAD, 20 May—Iraq faces an agricultural “dis-aster” this summer if Turkey continues to retain watersfrom the Tigris and Euphrates rivers which have sus-tained Iraqi agriculture for millennia, experts say.

The controversy over the sharing of the mighty riv-ers at the root of Iraq’s ancient name of Mesopotamia— meaning “between the rivers” in Greek — is almostas old as the country itself.

But for Baghdad, the current shortage demands anurgent response from Turkey. The reserves of all Iraqidams at the beginning of May totalled 11 billion cubicmetres (388 billion cubic feet) of water, compared toover 40 billion three years ago, although rain has notbeen below normal levels this winter.

The Euphrates is the most worrying situation.Reserves at Haditha dam in the country’s west, the

first on the river, amounted to just 1.5 billion cubicmetres on 1 May, compared to eight billion two yearsago.—Internet

Artificial skin manufacturedin fully automated process

BERLIN, 20 May— Skin from a factory –this has long been thedream ofp h a r m a c o l o g i s t s ,chemists and doctors.Research has an urgentneed for large quantitiesof ‘skin models’, whichcan be used to determineif products such as creamsand soaps, cleaningagents, medicines andadhesive bandages are

compatible with skin, orif they instead will lead toirritation or allergicreactions for theconsumer. Such testresults are seen as moremeaningful than thosefrom animal experiments, and can even make suchexperiments largelysuperfluous.

But artificial skinis rare. “The production iscomplex and involves agreat deal of manual work.At this time, even themarket's establishedinternational companiescannot produce more than2,000 tiny skinpieces amonth. With annualrequirements of more than6.5 million units in theEU area alone, however, the industrial demand farexceeds all currentlyavailable productioncapacities,” reports JörgSaxler.

Warm and fuzzy feelingsall in the brain

LONDON, 20 May—The same part of the brain thatmakes us crave food and sex may also help determinewhether somebody is a warm and sentimental “peo-ple” person, researchers said on Wednesday.

Scientists found a greater concentration of brain tis-sue in certain areas of the brain may drive some peo-ple to gush fuzzy feelings more than others, they re-ported in the European Journal of Neuroscience.

“It is interesting that we can pin down this relation-ship between a specific aspect of your personality anda specific region of the brain,” Graham Murray ofCambridge University in Britain, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.

“Those are the regions that we know are importantfor basic biological drives like for food and sex.”

The researchers, who collaborated with a team atOulu University in Finland, used questionnaires to helpmeasure the relationship between personality and brainstructure in 41 men.

The volunteers were asked how well they thoughtthey connected to people, how they showed their emo-tions and whether they liked to please people. The re-searchers used brain scans to analyze the concentra-tion of grey matter — tissue rich in brain cells knownas neurons — in different regions.

Stem cells “seek and destroy” cancer cells

CHICAGO, 20 May—Genetically engi-neered stem cells from bone marrowshowed promise as a potential new wayto deliver a cancer-killing protein totumors, British researchers said onTuesday.

Experiments in cell cultures and inmice showed the adult stem cells — atype known as mesenchymal stem cells— could home in on cancer cells anddeliver a lethal protein that attacked onlythe cancer while sparing normal healthytissue.

“We’ve developed cells which spe-cifically target cancer through the bodyand deliver an anti-cancer protein to

where it is needed in a seek-and-destroyapproach,” said Dr Michael Loebingerof University College London, who pre-sented his findings at the American Tho-racic Society conference in San Diego.

“Essentially, we’ve combined twopieces of research. The first is that mes-enchymal stem cells have an innate abil-ity to seek out tumors throughout thebody,” Loebinger said in a telephoneinterview.

Loebinger, Dr. S. M. Janes and col-leagues altered the cells to express ormake the cancer-killing protein calledTNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligandor TRAIL.

“This protein has the ability to causethe death only of cancer cells. By com-bining these two approaches, we have acell which has the ability to go aroundthe body and find and destroy tumors,”Loebinger said.

Studies in cell cultures showed thecells were able to find and kill cells fromlung, squamous, breast and cervical can-cer. “Lots of cancer have sensitivity tothis TRAIL protein,” Loebinger said.

They also injected the cells into micewith breast tumors and showed theywere able to safely kill the tumors butleave healthy tissue intact.—Internet

Deadly pneumonia caused bysuper-bugs on rise

LONDON, 20 May — Deadlypneumonia caused by so-calledsuperbugs are spreading outsidehospitals and represent a growing threatto the public, US researchers warned onWednesday.

Making the problem more worryingis the recent H1N1 flu outbreak becausethe “super-bug” pneumonia most com-monly appears following an influenza-like illness, Alicia Hidron of the EmoryUniversity School of Medicine inAtlanta reported.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcusaureus (MRSA) infections can rangefrom boils to more severe infections ofthe blood, lungs and the sites of surgery.Such infections can often be treated onlywith expensive intravenous antibiotics.

Most cases are associated withhospitals, nursing homes or other healthcare facilities but infections acquired inthe wider community are increasing, theresearcher noted.

Kid more likely to smoke if momdid while pregnant

LOS ANGELES, 20 May— Kids are more apt tosmoke if their motherssmoked during pregnancy,a new study has found.

For the study, researchers at the Uni-versity of Arizona useddata from the TucsonChildren’s RespiratoryStudy to see whether amother’s smoking duringpregnancy and during herchild’s early years affectedwhether the child smokedlater on.

The researchers ass-essed maternal smokingduring pregnancy andwhen infants were 1.5months and 1.5 years old

and again when the chil-dren were 6, 9 and 11 yearsold. They then looked atthe children’s smoking be-haviour when they were atages 16 and 22.

They found that womenwho smoked duringpregnancy and during theirchildren’s early years weremore likely to have kidswho smoked at age 22.This proved true whetherthe mother smoked or didnot smoke during thechild’s school years.

In fact, these childrenare four times more likelyto become regularsmokers, according to thestudy.

In addition, the childrenof mothers who smokedduring pregnancy and theirearly years were less likelyto quit smoking than werethe offspring of motherswho never smoked or whostarted smoking whentheir children were school-age.

The research suggestedthat biological changestake place in the womb.

“Somehow smoke ischanging the brainchemistry,” said the leadresearcher, Dr Roni Grad,an associate professor ofclinical pediatrics at theuniversity.

GENEVA, 20 May —TheWorld Health Organizationurged drugmakers toreserve some of theirpandemic swine fluvaccine for poor countries, but received few concreteoffers as experts disclosedthat an effective flu shot isstill months away.

The global body wantscompanies to donate atleast 10 percent of theirproduction or offerreduced prices for poorcountries that couldotherwise be left withoutvaccines if there is asudden surge in demand. But some are skepticalabout what such acommitment could meanfor their business.

giant Novartis AGspokesman Eric Althoff.UN Secretary-GeneralBan Ki-moon, whomet with 30 majorpharmaceutical manu-facturers, called Tuesdayfor global solidarity inconfronting the disease.Solidarity “must mean thatall have access to drugsand vaccines,” he added.

The only majordrugmaker that publiclyagreed to the WHOrequest Tuesday wasBritain’s GlaxoSmi-thKline PLC, which said itwould donate 50 milliondoses in a pandemic andoffer more that WHOcould buy at a discount forpoor countries.

A second drugmakerwith only limited pro-duction capacity said it

would share half of itsvaccine doses. WHOofficials declined toidentify the companybecause the deal has yetto be signed.

Smaller vaccine makersfrom developing countriesalso promised to share 10percent of their vaccineswith the UN at cheaperprices.

“I can reassure you Ihave received very seriouscommitments,” WHODirector-General DrMargaret Chan told report-ers after meeting with thedrugmakers.

TALLAHASSEE, 20 May — Charles Darwin described thesudden origin of flowering plants about 130 million years ago as anabominable mystery, one that scientists have yet to solve.

But a new University of Florida study, set to appear in theonline edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences, is helping shed light on the mystery with informationabout what the first flowers looked like and how they evolved fromnonflowering plants.

"There was nothing like them before and nothing like themsince," said Andre Chanderbali, lead author of the study and apostdoctoral associate at UF's Florida Museum of Natural History."The origin of the flower is the key to the origin of the angiosperms(flowering plants)."—Internet

MELBOURNE, 20 May — A new study has shown that theeffectiveness of the Komodo Dragon bite is a combination of highlyspecialized serrated teeth and venom. The authors also dismiss thewidely accepted theory that prey die from septicemia caused bytoxic bacteria living in the dragon's mouth.

Using sophisticated medical imaging techniques, an inter-national team led by Dr Bryan Fry from the University of Mel-bourne have revealed that the Komodo Dragon (Varanuskomodoensis) has the most complex venom glands yet describedfor any reptile, and that its close extinct relative Megalania was thelargest venomous animal to have lived.

The work will be published in the next issue of the journalProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.—Internet
