Essex County College, an open access community college, serves thedynamic needs of diverse constituencies through comprehensive educational programs and services.

CC was established in 1966 asthe public, two-year, openaccess community college ofEssex County, admitted its firststudents in temporary quartersin downtown Newark in 1968,and moved to its current per-manent site in the heart of theUniversity Heights district ofthe city in 1976. Newark isNew Jersey’s largest city, 10miles west of New York City.

�Approximately 25,000 peopleenroll each year in ECC’s var-ious degree and non-degreeprograms, including studentsfrom more than 40 foreigncountries.

�The curriculum featuresclose to 70 majors and 564courses as part of a widerange of transfer and careerprograms.

�ECC is adjacent to RutgersUniversity-Newark and theNew Jersey Institute of Tech-nology, and within walkingdistance of the University ofMedicine and Dentistry ofNew Jersey.

�ECC sends more transferstudents to Rutgers-Newarkthan any other two-year col-lege in New Jersey.

�Tuition and fees for an ECCstudent are significantly lowerthan at a state college or stateuniversity in New Jersey.

Outstanding FacilitiesThe 22-acre main campus inNewark features a multilevelmegastructure covering threecity blocks, a two-level multi-purpose Physical EducationBuilding/Child DevelopmentCenter complex, the Centerfor Technology, and the ClaraE. Dasher Student Center.Among the resources of the502,000 square foot mega-structure are state-of-the-artlaboratories, high tech class-rooms with advanced teachingmodalities, the Mary B. BurchTheater for the PerformingArts, and a newly renovatedlibrary equipped with onlinepublic access catalog stations,a computer lab offering instruc-tion in information literacy, andextensive resource materials.

The West Essex Campus ofECC in West Caldwell meetsthe education and trainingneeds of people who live and

work in the western part ofEssex County. The facility in-cludes state-of-the art computerlabs, science labs, a library, astudent center, and the samestudent support services thatare offered at the main cam-pus. The campus is also thesite of the NJ Department ofLabor Professional ServicesGroup which assists studentsand area residents with jobsearches. Ample on-site park-ing and access to public trans-portation make the campus anideal location for students.

Small ClassesAt ECC, most of the classesare small, usually with nomore than 25 to 30 students,ensuring that students receivepersonal attention. Facultynot only have outstandingmastery of their subject areasbut are also known for theirpersonal commitment to theirstudents.

Wide Range of Transferand Career ProgramsAt ECC, students can earnAssociate in Arts (A.A.) andAssociate in Science (A.S.)degrees for transfer to four-yearcolleges, or they can pursueAssociate in Applied Science(A.A.S.) degrees and certificatesto prepare for immediate employ-ment. Some A.A.S. programsalso transfer; academic advisorscan provide additional informa-tion on the transfer process.Transfer/articulation agreementsexist with many institutions;these ensure that all approvedcourses students take at ECC willtransfer to the four-year collegesof their choice. Special joint and/or dual admission agreementshave been implemented throughwhich freshmen at ECC are simul-taneously admitted to RutgersUniversity, New Jersey Instituteof Technology, New Jersey CityUniversity, Kean University, orThomas Edison State College.The transfer coordinator in theCareer Resource Center can pro-vide additional information.

Continuing EducationOpportunitiesCommunity and continuing edu-cation programs include intensivebasic skills training, multilingualoutreach programs, customizedcorporate training programs,career advancement and personalenrichment courses, youth pro-grams, seminars, workshops, andpublic forums on diverse topicsof interest to local residents.

Convenient Schedules andAcademic SupportWorking adults, recent high schoolgraduates, and others can pursuefull or part-time study for educa-tional or career advancement orpersonal enrichment. ECC offersconvenient day, evening, andSaturday classes and a compre-

hensive support system thatincludes counseling, tutoring,computer services, financialassistance, bilingual classes, andcareer planning. Developmentalprograms are offered to studentswho require remediation beforetaking college-level courses. Theacademic year is divided intotwo 15-week semesters (fall andspring) and two summer terms.

Athletics and OtherExtracurricular ActivitiesECC student athletes excel in theclassroom as well as in intercol-legiate competition. Many ECCteams have been ranked nation-ally and routinely win distinctchampionships. Several ECCathletes have become Olympiansin their respective sports. Studentsmay also choose to participate ina variety of student clubs and

organizations, the StudentGovernment Association, and theECCO student newspaper.

Africana InstituteThe Africana Institute opened on May 22, 2001 at the maincampus and serves as a research,education, and communicationcenter for the study of the histo-ry and life of people of African,African-American, and Carib-bean descent. Its focus is on thehistorical and contemporaryexperiences of Black people.The institute’s educational andcultural programs and resourcesare designed to raise the aware-ness of students and the greatercommunity about the Africandiaspora, and to increase andimprove intra and interracialdialogue and relations.

Susan Stepney graduated at the top of her class. The 2001 Valedictorian not only earned twoassociate degrees but had the distinction of being the first student in ECC history to be re-cognized on the All-USA Academic First Team for Community College Students. Susan wasthe president of ECC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and also served as a literacy volunteer and a mentor to local teens. She is now an English major at Columbia University and aspires to a teaching career.

Christian Delmotte, president of ECC’s acclaimedPTK honor society for 2001-2002, graduated withhighest honors and an A.A. in Liberal Arts. Nameda national Distinguished PTK Chapter President,

he has transferred to Seton Hall University to pursue baccalaureate and graduate study.He hopes to one day return to his first almamater as a member of its faculty.

Edward Montoyagraduated from ECC with high honors in 1999, earning an A.S. inBiology/Pre-Med. He transferred toKean Universitywhere he continuedto excel academ-ically. He has foundtime in the midst ofbaccalaureate stud-ies and preparationfor MCATs to tutorESL students atEssex. As he put it,“I love this college.That’s why I am stillhere.”

Carol Mauermeyer graduated from ECC in1976. She went on to earn her bachelor’sfrom Montclair State University and hermaster’s and Ed.D. from Rutgers Univer-sity. She specialized in Special Educationand Human Resource Administration, andis currently Professor of Office Administrationin the Department of Computer Information

Systems atRaritanValleyCommunityCollege.She hasbeen aprofessor inthe field ofoffice admin-istration forthe last nineteenyears.

Robert Okojie came to the U.S. from Nigeria. He majored in ElectronicEngineering Technology at ECC in 1987-88. Hethen transferred to NJIT where he obtained hisB.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering.He is currently an Electronic Engineer conduct-ing research at the NASA Glenn ResearchCenter in Ohio.

Bernado Henry graduated from ECC in 1993 with a degree in Accounting. He then transferredto Pace University in New York City and earned his baccalaureate in Accounting. Most recently,he earned a juris doctorate (JD) from Seton Hall Law School and has passed the bar in bothNew York and New Jersey.

provided one-on-one attention. They explainedwhy we were doing whatwe were doing and how

Nidhi George Chabora graduated from ECC in1992. Today she is anAdvanced Practice Nurse in Adult Psychiatric/MentalHealth with a master’s inNursing from Pace Univer-sity. She is also a mem-ber of a multidisciplinaryteam of psychiatrists,psychiatric rehabilitationspecialists, and advancedpractice nurses from theUniversity of Medicineand Dentistry of NewJersey that have a consulting affiliation withGreystone Park StatePsychiatric Hospital.She is also an adjunctfaculty member at UMDNJ’sSchool of Nursing.

The Associate in Arts (A.A.)and Associate in Science (A.S.)degree programs are specifically

designed to pre-pare studentsfor transfer tofour-year col-leges and uni-versities.

most or all of their credits to baccalaureate programs.
