The filmsnarrative is so tight and intricate, youll probably missout on a plot advancement if you even get up tofetch a glass of water. However, paying attention tothe storyline is thoroughly rewarding as the movieencompasses great characters, a complex script, and astrong political viewpoint. We say: If youre into geopolitical thrillers, this filmcannot be missed.

The Indian election juggernaut is on themove, with political parties vying for everybit of attention from voters.

But is General Election 2009 going to getmore exciting than the previous years? Willcampaigning on the Internet play a crucial role?

Are we going to see the social media, whichBarack Obama cashed in on extensively to winthe U.S. Presidential election, be a winning fac-tor for Indian politicos, too? Hang on! Beforethat we decided to check the online space andits accessibility among the leaders.

    Blogsphere

Age is no barrier for those using the Internetto campaign. And 82-year-old L.K. Advaniknows that best. His blog (lkadvani.in) and web-site are topping the election charts as the mostviewed/read blogs this season. According to da-ta sourced from the IT cell of the BJP in NewDelhi, every day the site receives 20,000 uniquevisitors. With each person viewing four to fivepages, this brings the site around a lakh pageviews a day. If thats not enough, there are moreindicators to show the increasing interestamong Indians about elections. Over 7,000 peo-ple have registered with their biodata as volun-teers.

But will the Internet bring in the votes? Prody-ut Bora, national convenor, IT cell, replies:Communication consists of two parts mes-sage and medium. It is the message that gets invotes, not the medium. Elections were fought,

won and lost, after radio and TV. Similarly, elec-tions were fought, won and lost, even after in-ternet. At no point can one say that we won orlost because we used a particular medium.

Now, how many people are writing for Advaniand how much of his election budget has beendiverted for online campaigns is an altogetherdifferent topic, which we think his fellow poli-ticians should be raising in the online war.

Others including Omar Abdullah (jknc.org/blog), S.M. Krishna (http://sm-krishna.sulek-ha.com/blog/posts.htm) and M.K. Stalin(http://mkstalin.net/blog/) seem to havestopped posting.

I am on Orkut/FacebookWe all know the rage social networking sites

like Facebook and Orkut have become. Now itlooks like local networking sites are cashing inon the election fever more than Facebook.

BuzzGain, a software company that tracks theability of people to communicate on networking

sites, claims that Orkut and local search enginesare bigger bets.

When compared to Facebook (4 million us-ers), Orkut (21.3 million users) seems to be a lotmore popular. Also, local sites like Mingleboxand BigAdda have come out as larger campaign-ing zones, says Mukund Mohan, CEO of Buzz-Gain.

Meet Up or meeting conferences where agroup of enthusiasts gather on a specific dayand time at a constituency to create awarenesson the need to vote is equally picking up.

Cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi topthe list of these Meet Ups, which are againpopularised through networking sites, addsMohan.

MoreNot enough that most of the parties have their

own websites, this is also the time for individu-als/party supporters to showcase work, ideologyand poll planks through websites of their own.Leading the campaign in cyber world are Na-rendra Modi (www.narendramodi.in), ShivrajSingh Chouhan (www.shivrajsinghchouhan.in),among others.

Likewise, Congress is going active on Twitterwith an all-out campaign.

With poll date drawingclose, SMSes, blogs, socialnetworking sites andwebsites are buzzing

amount of money a candidate canspend during the election campaign. Inmost Lok Sabha constituencies, thelimit as recently amended inDecember, 1997, is Rs. 15,00,000,although in some states the limit is Rs.6,00,000. Although supporters of acandidate can spend as much as theylike to help out with a campaign, theyhave to get written permission of thecandidate, and whilst parties areallowed to spend as much money oncampaigns as they want, recentSupreme Court judgements have saidthat unless a political party canspecifically account for money spentduring the campaign, it will considerany activities as being funded by thecandidates and counting towards theirelection expenses.

We have asked the ICC to provide us with a financial model and our Board will discuss the matteronce we have received this model and an official ICC invitation. We would also have to follow the

Government protocols for hosting a major international event. If the finances and protocols are right andour Board agrees to accept the invitation, then we have the infrastructures and the expertise from recentlyhosting two ICC world championships to stage a successful tournament at short notice.

English clubs completed a cleansweep of four teams into theChampions League quarter-fi-nals following a cliff-hanger

shootout victory by Arsenal againstRoma on Wednesday night.

Defending champions Manches-ter United had already beaten InterMilan, and on Tuesday Liverpooland Chelsea had booked theirpassage.

When Max Tonetto shot high overthe bar it gave Arsenal passage intothe last eight 7-6 on penalties after

the match ended 1-0, 1-1 on aggre-gate, after extra time. We needed toshow our nerve tonight and deter-mination, Arsenal manager Arsene

Wenger said. We were a bit nervousat the start and gave a goal awaymore by nerves than them creatingthe chance.

I must pay tribute to the nerves ofmy team. There is something inthere that comes out, that is hugemental strength. Our character hasbeen questioned many times. Ivesaid many times that this team isvery strong.

Sir Alex wins over old foe

At Old Trafford headers by Ne-manja Vidic, who outfoxed Patrick

Vieira in the box, and then CristianoRonaldo put United through 2-0 atthe expense of Jose Mourinhos In-ter Milan, who never really got onequal terms with their opponents.

Barcelonas Thierry Henry scoredhis 49th and 50th goals in the com-petition, putting him fourth in theall time list, as Barcelona beatFrench champions Lyon 5-2 at the

Nou Camp stadium. Porto and At-letico finished goalless in Lisbon butthe 2-2 draw in the first leg in Spainmeant Porto went through on awaygoals.

The eight teams which go into theFriday March 20 draw are Liverpool,Manchester United, Arsenal, Chel-sea, Bayern Munich, Villarreal, Por-to and Barcelona, with no Italianteam for the first time in seven

years. It was one of those long Euro-

pean nights where you dont know if youre watching a game of football

or watching a game of suicide,United manager Alex Ferguson saidafterwards. After scoring the firstgoal, I thought we would go on andkill them. But after going ahead westarted trying to put icing on thecake and we were lucky to be infront at half-time.

Ferguson added: I thought wecould score a few goals but then westarted doing flicks and back heels, hitting balls into space where noone was. It was really reckless foot-ball and it allowed Inter Milan to get

a grip of the game. From the middleof the first half to the end of the firsthalf they were the better team.

Word of praise from JoseInter Milan manager Jose Mou-

rinho claimed United had enjoyedmore than their fair share of luckybreaks. But he had no doubt aboutthe English champions ability tocomplete an unprecedented quin-tuple because of the way Alex Fergu-sons side have matured over thelast two seasons.

    They have basically the same

team as when I was at Chelsea,Mourinho said. There is only Ber-batov who is new. But they havebeen together for four or five years. They are not young anymore theage average is 26-27 if you forgetGiggs and Scholes. They are in theright moment to be at the top oftheir careers. They reached themaximum level. They have experi-ence, quality, great physical condi-tion and intensity in their game. That is what the Champions Leagueis about. So yes, I think they can do

it (win five trophies). The five trophies would be En-

glish Premiership, FA Cup, LeagueCup, World Club Cup, and Cham-pions League.

About their 5-2 hammering ofLyon, Barcelona striker Lionel Messisaid: We werent afraid, but its trueafter those two goals (by Lyon) we

were a little surprised, we had acomplicated moment. But even so

we werent in a very dangerous sit-uation, we were all united, we want-ed the same thing.

was the outfit that looked as ifmade from hundreds of leftoverhoundstooth fabrics sewn to-gether.

Marni and DSquared2 restrict-ed the use of the fabric to muf-flers and trousers, while DerekLam sent out houndstooth minis-kirts.

At DKNY, beside clothes thatcould be expected to be craftedsolely out of houndstooth, there

This winter fabric has wit-nessed a resurgence in the formof important Fall/Winter 2009-2010 shows entirely dedicated orrevolving around it.

Alexander McQueens show inParis, as always, was high on dra-ma. The bleeding red lips, howev-er, did nothing to distract fromthe fact that the line was a blind,

There was much buzz in Bol-lywood about Rakeysh Om-prakash Mehra making abiopic on legendary film-

maker Guru Dutt and his havingzeroed in on Aamir Khan to playthe lead role, but the directorsays he is not yet ready to makesuch a film.

I never talked about doing aGuru Dutt biopic. People kepttalking about it, Mehra told.

Nasreen Munni Kabeer hadcome to me with an idea on the

life of Guru Dutt. I told heranyone would like to make a filmon the life of Guru Dutt, espe-cially someone with my sensibil-ities. Then she came up with ascreenplay. I told her Id make it

when Im ready. This is someth-ing that crossed my mind 18months ago. Since then I haventeven thought about it. As of nowIm not ready to take on GuruDutt, he said.

Mehra feels only one film onthe life of Guru Dutt should be

made. And that too with the rightintention, aesthetics and theright amount of sincerity. Onlyone person should do it, and allthe others who want to honourhim with a film should just moveback and support that one pro-

ject. Guru Dutt means too muchto all of us, the filmmaker said.

And what about the talk of Aa-mir playing Guru Dutt?

I never thought of whod playGuru Dutt. It never went that far.The script always chooses the

actors. Its the script whichchooses me, so who am I tochoose anything else?

After Delhi-6, Mehra now wants to direct a light subject.Lets see what it is. It will be alight film. And by that I mean aless demanding subject, not nec-essarily a comedy, he quipped.Mehra is at the moment enjoy-ing the run of Delhi-6, whichstarred Abhishek Bachchan, Wa-heeda Rahman and SonamKapoor.

The feedback and fan following are tremendous... An Indianfilm got so widely reviewed inthe international press.

The director admits that thinitial response to the film madhim really low.

So much so that I startedoubting myself. How could I gthis wrong? It was a whole campaign against Delhi-6. I donknow who sponsored it. I wainitially agitated by the response. Then I realised it was new narrative and the audienc

would take some time gettinused to it.

Delhi-6 was being perceiveas a summer blockbuster. But i

wasnt a Singh Is Kinng. Peoplcame to watch Rang De Basan

When we went for the audition,no one was willing to talk. They had difficulty in open-ing up. But after gaining their

trust, we were all for surprise as they hadscores of hidden talents within them, brims G. Brammanathan of NalandaWayFoundation , the script writer and director

of Paatti Vada Kaakka Nari, a humorousplay enacted by the children of juvenilehomes at the Museum Theatre onWednesady.

The auditorium at Egmore was rever-berating with the applause as The 45 kidsfrom 17 juvenile homes in Tamil Nadugave a rocking performance for one-ahalf-hour. From eight-year-old Ajay to 18-year-old Suresh, each one played their

role to perfection. The same old vada storyinvolving old lady, crow and fox was in-terlaced with stories from Panchathanthi-ra folk tales. The entire show wasperformed with pre-recorded soundtracks.

Along with the story we have includedsome social messages which the childrencame up with. It is clear that the social

evils like smoking, drinking has created avery strong impression in the minds ofthese children that they are realising it assomething wrong, Bramma said.

For Balaji, a class IX student fromRoyapuram home, the whole exercise wasan introduction to a dream world. Wear-ing a full black outfit, to enact the role ofcrow in the play, he was raring for a chatafter the show.

The rehearsals were fun. Now I have

many friends in this group. I even dubbedfor some other characters, says Balaji

who is also a budding mimicry artist.Asked what he learnt from the whole exer-cise, he says Brahma anna taught mehow to modulate my voice for differentroles. That was new to me.

If Balaji is good at voice modulation, then Suresh is a good actor, says WeslinPanakal, Head of Communication, Nalan-daWay. Each one has a different talent, but they dont have a platform to expressit. So we thought of helping them, sheadds.

Sriram Ayer, the CEO of NalandaWaysaid that within three years all the childrenof juvenile homes will be trained in differ-ent arts and provided a platform to show-case their talents.
