The Finance Minister recent-ly stated that there is noplan to remove the Securi-ties Transaction Tax (STT)

or alter its current avatar. In astatement made to the Lok Sab-ha, he said that the STT will staytill a better alternative can be

worked out. It is said that the ex-

chequer will earn close to Rs.6,000 crores from the STT in thecoming fiscal.

Pre and post-budget talks haveconstantly spoken about STT.There were a lot of expectationsby economists and securitiesmarket constituents in terms ofremoving of the STT. Even the Ec-onomic Survey 2008-09 put forthideas on the same line. But, theFinance Minister disappointedeveryone by not removing it andthen making the statement in LokSabha to continue with it.

STT and meSo what is the STT and how

does it affect one? The Securities

Transaction Tax is one of thefancy taxes seen by the former Fi-nance Minister P. Chidambaram, imposed as a percentage of theturnover (selling and buying) ofsecurities by investors. Althoughsecurities commonly has come torepresent stocks, but the legaldefinition covers bonds, deben-tures, derivatives (futures and op-tions), Government securitiesand instruments declared by thecentral government.

This means that whenever youbuy or sell any of the above men-tioned instruments you will pay apercentage of the value (turn-

over) to the government as STT.The rates are as below:

Shares (Delivery): 0.125% ofturnover for both buying andselling

    Shares (Intraday): Nil forPurchase.

Shares (Intraday): 0.25% ofturnover for sale transactions

Futures (Purchase): Nil.Futures (Sale):0.017% of sale

    value.Options (Buy):0.125% of settle-

ment price provided the option isexercised.

    Options (Sell):0.017% of the

premium value.Tax Benefits: Any equity w

is brought or sold from a renised stock exchange and

which STT has been paid wiexempt from long term cagains.

Bottom-line: The income o6,000 crores to the exchequhighly tempting for the govment to think of removingSTT in the near future. Indiviinvestors too dont seem tocomplaining as the amseems to be meagre.

FD rates dropCompany fixed deposit rates have shown a consider-

able fall. The rates of some of the companies havecome down by over 1 per cent. Tata Finance and Ma-hindra Finance have FD rates of 10 per cent. The mainreason seen behind the drop in rates is the easy avail-ability of cash and higher liquidity.

Higher medical cover mootedThe IRDA has asked insurance companies to look at

covering health expenses apart from the hospitalisa-tion charges. As of today only expenses incurred duringhospitalisation is covered by health insurance compa-nies, but this is just a part of the total expense incurredby the patient.

The Chairman of IRDA Mr. Narayan has said thatThe annual medical spend is estimated to be Rs. 2 lakh

crore. Of this, only Rs 60,000-70,000 crore is hospitalexpenditure. The remaining is towards diagnosis andmedicines. The health-related insurance products donot address outside hospitalization charges

Companies to make payments to the policy holdersusing electronic fund transfer option like NationalElectronic Fund Transfer and Electronic ClearingService.

    Many women are unhappy

with their figures. Theythink their hips are too

wide, their legs are tooshort and their breasts are toosmall, all the while believing thatwomen who are tall and thin

must have it easy when it comesto style.

But women who have the pro-portions of runway models often

have problems finding the per-fect look. There are a few tricksthey can use to be rid of a fewcentimetres. This works best inthe so-called long look, said Be-ttyna Poeltl, a style expert at animage and fashion institute inBerlin.

A long t-shirt over pants and avest - that looks well and it canmagically get rid of a few centi-metres, Poeltl said.

Tall women look a bit smallerwhen their outfit can be separat-ed into different parts. Long blaz-ers and long coats also work wellon tall women provided they cov-er the thigh, she said. A form-fit-ting top under the blazer or coat

is the best way to add elegance tothe outfit.Three-quarters or cigarette

pants, which leave the ankle free, also reduce the leg length, saidIngo Brack of the fashion schoolEsmond in Munich.

Cigarette pants are tight-fit-ting, straight-legged pants thatwere popular in the 60s. AudreyHepburn wore them and they canbe found today in many closets.

With their high waist and theshort leg length, they are perfectfor tall, thin women, said Poeltl.

With ankles revealed, pumps orballerinas are the best choice inshoes. Because cigarette pants at-tract so much attention, Poeltlsuggests an understated top.

The Indian players had their firstoutdoor training session at the LaMasia ground on Friday, where the

We are enjoying every minute ofour stay. The city, the culture, eve-rything attracts you. But nothing canbeat the Nou Camp, I-League win-ner Churchill Brothers goalie Arin-dam Bhattcharya said. Deepika one of the

    easiest actors to handle

Expectations are runninghigh from Imtiaz Ali afterJab We Met became oneof the biggest hits of the

recent times. Now readywith Love Aaj Kal, thedirector in a conversationwith TWF correspondentRitesh Sharma shares hisexperiences of workingwith Saif Ali Khan andDeepika Padukone

Finally, Love Aaj Kal is about to release.Yes, there were so many speculations and now its just a

matter of few days and it will put an end to all that theaudiences had waited for. I had been really busy over thelast year or soit went off like a whisk but finally I amrelieved now, a lot more at ease though I am still busygiving the last minute finishing touches. Are you tensednervous, what?

Actually, I am having no feelings. To be honest I amperfectly all right. I know no one would believe it but I ama person who doesnt have emotions, so probably be-cause of that I am not reacting. But honestly speaking I

am really very hopeful about the film. I have tried to do abetter job this time than what I did last time.

Dont you feel the pressure because

comparisons will be drawn with Jab We Metmore so because it was a blockbuster?

I knowI know and I really cant stop that. Its bound to happen and that is the only area

where I think I have to prove myself. WhenJab WeMetreleased, I didnt know that it would go on to

become on the biggest hits of the year. Today, when Iwatch that film, I really smile at times because there

were so many flaws. This time I have tried to avoidand rectify all those things. I believe in learning. Ieven learn from my actors. I learnt a lot from Dee-

pika and Saif.Okay, that means the audiences are in for a

bigger treat. That is up to the audiences but I am reallyhopeful because its a good film, complete

entertainer and the Saif-Deepika chemistrywill be the one to watch out for.

    That brings to the obvious

question. Why didnt you castKareena? Saif-Kareena chemistrytoo would have created hype andexpectations would have soared.Thats true but I was very focused on

the project. The script demandedDeepika and so she is here. Kareena isone of my favourite actress-es but Deepika fitted therole better. I think this ques-tion is being asked a lot but I

want to tell something- rais-ing the Kareena issue also de-fames Deepika. She has donea very good job and I amproud of her performance. In fact, Saif too hasmaintained that he would

    have loved to have

Kareena in thefilm but hasalways stoodby yourdecision tocast Deepika?

That is really sonice and supportive

of him. I know thebond Saif and Kareena

share but at the same timeSaif has throughout been suppor-

tive. He is the producer of the film but he was completelynon-interfering when it came to direction. He is very easyto work with and gives his director complete room. And what about Deepika Padukone?Oh! She is a sweetheart. She is natural and makes any

scene look easy with her smooth performance. I am reallyhappy that she has done such a good job with only acouple of years of experience in the trade. In fact Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh too will beseen together after a long time in this film. They are a couple people would love to watch. Its a love

story and I cant think of anyone even from todays generation who would deny that Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh

were one of the best onscreen couples to embrace thindustry.

So you continue with a love story afterSocha NaTha, Jab We Metand nowLove Aaj Kal.This story is very engrossing. No two of my stories have

any resemblance. Saif will be seen in a double role andthat is another area to look forward to. He plays a Sardarand has really done a great job. He also plays the youngRishi Kapoor so theres a lot in store. But I never reallystart writing keeping in mind that I will have to pen downa love story. Its just that I came up writing three lovestories one after the other. I start writing and a love storyemerges.Saif pays a Sardar but you havent yet unveiledthe look of the actress opposite him.(HaHaHa). That is a surprise element. We have

kept it under wraps and arent unveiling her looks bucertainly its going to be a big surprise once the film releases. So what next? Another love story? To be honest I am not even thinking about it now. I

dont know if I will make another love story or a thriller, oa horror. I am yet to start writing. It might be that I land up

writing another love story. I am also directing a film foShree Asthavinayak Films. So it will take some time.
