Message from Your Rector
VOLUME 39, NUMBER 3 June, 2019
This October, a team of people from Trinity Stoughton and Trinity Can-
ton, myself included will be traveling with others from South Carolina
to the Dominican Republic to take part in a medical mission. This mis-
sion will be at the Episcopal Iglesia San Pedro y San Pablo in la bar-
quita, a barrio outside of the capital city of Santo Domingo.
During our week-long clinic, we will triage, examine and offer basic
medical care to over 400 people. Medicines are given to those in need
after seeing our physicians, as well as healthy nutrition information. Of
course the most important aspect of our medical mission is the deepen-
ing of the relationship we have with the parish and its neighbors.
I am asking for your support in this mission to help cover my expenses.
While fundraising is held to raise monies to purchase medicines and
supplies, the expenses for travel, hotel and meals, are typically person-
ally paid by those volunteering to take part in the team. My expenses
typically run about $1,600.
I, in particular, would appreciate any financial support that you might
be able to offer to help me to participate in this mission. You may write
a check to Trinity Episcopal Church, 414 Sumner Street in Stoughton,
attn. Sonia Hodge.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support. Our work is
yet another reminder of our call to be Christ’s hands and feet in the
world, and his reminder to us “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one
of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Blessings in Christ,
John
Rector’s Office Hours Rev. Beach will have office hours from 2 PM - 4 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for
any pastoral needs. Please stop by or call Lynn in the church office to make an
appointment.

Senior
Lunches
The Altar Guild held it’s luncheon meeting on May 4th. As always, the pot
luck luncheon was delicious.
During the meeting, Anna Loura informed us that it was with a sad heart
that she felt it necessary to resign as our Directress. She assured us that
she would still be an active member of the Guild. We accepted her resigna-
tion and thanked her for all she has done. When Anna accepts responsibil-
ity, she puts 150% into the work - and she did that for the Altar Guild.
THANK YOU, ANNA!
Altar Guild Luncheon Meeting
The Senior Luncheon program will not meet during the summer - June,
July and August. They will resume in September and we hope to see
you there.

The annual Betty Angell May Breakfast was held on May 5th. A profit of

tee, the future mission trip and the Altar Guild. Thank you to all who came
and supported this event - the food was delicious.

O gracious and loving God, you work eve-
rywhere reconciling, loving and healing
your people and your creation. In your
Son, and through the power of your Holy
Spirit, you invite each of us to join you in
your work. We, young and old, lay and
ordained, ask you to form us more and
more in your image and likeness,
through our prayer and worship of you
and through the study of your scripture,
that our eyes will be fully opened to your
mission in the work. Then, God, into our
communities, our nation and the world,
send us to serve with Christ taking risks
to give life and hope to all people and all
of your creation. We ask this in Jesus’
name. Amen.

Thank You Judy Niles and Lou Raposa
Judy Niles offered her services to once again give us our organ music
during the 10 AM services. Judy is not unfamiliar to us as she has
been our substitute organist/choir director on many occasions over the
years. She is happy to be back here with her friends.
Lou Raposa continues to supply guitar music to enhance our 10 AM
service and has been attempting to gather the youth to entertain us
periodically, (they did a nice job on Easter with their song).

VOLUME 39, NUMBER 3
BRIEF HISTORY—Thomas Coram, a wealthy sea captain and philanthropist, arrived
from England in the 1690’s and established a successful shipyard on the Taunton River.
He returned to London in 1703 and left behind 59 acres of land in trust and a substan-
tial collection of books to help found a Church of England in Taunton.
Twenty-five years later Thomas Coram’s intent was carried out. In 1728 a congregation
of lay persons gathered and a small church was built on the outskirts of town near the
Three Mile River on what is now Tremont Street. Although the land trust was no longer
available, Coram’s library of books became the basis for the young parish’s ministry. The
church was named St. Thomas.
During the Revolution, St. Thomas Church, like most Episcopal Churches, fell upon hard
times and was closed for a number of years as were many others in the area. The build-
ing itself stood unused and blew down in the Gale of 1815. In 1820 the parish was
incorporated. In 1828 the Vestry voted to seek a minister who was called and then a
new building was erected in the center of Taunton on High Street across from the pre-
sent building.
The church grew rapidly leading to the enlargement of the building in the 1840’s and
this, too, was soon outgrown. The third and present structure designed by Richard Up-
john was consecrated in 1859. A chapel was added in 1869. A fire gutted the Church
sanctuary in 1898, but it was rebuilt with the addition of a large three-manual Jardine
organ in 1899.
The historically significant 1759 McKinstry House (present rectory) adjacent to the
church was purchased in 1907 for use as a Sunday School. In 1910 Mr. & Mrs. Walter
Cabot Baylies donated a Sunday School building. This parish house has proven to be of
immeasurable value throughout the years to the church and to the entire community. In
1960 ground was broken for an addition to the parish house which completed the com-
plex of buildings as we know it today.
