Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD (The congregation may be seated)

The Lessons A Reading from Revelation. (7:9-17) After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. "For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The Psalm: 34:1-10, 22 (Said in unison) Benedicam Dominum 1 I will bless the Lord at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 I will glory in the Lord; * let the humble hear and rejoice. 3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt his Name together. 4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me *

and delivered me out of all my terror. 5 Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed. 6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me * and saved me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them. 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; * happy are they who trust in him! 9 Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. 22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. A Reading from First John. (3:1-3) See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12), People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

(Please face the reader for the reading of the Gospel) When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.”Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Canon Andrew T. Gerns Renewal of Baptismal Vows In Holy Baptism, we have become part of the Body of Christ that great fellowship of believers in all times and places. As members of Christ’s body, we are inheritors of God’s kingdom with the saints in light. Let us now renew the vows of our baptism by which God has made us a holy people.

Celebrant Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ?

People I do. Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and

earth. Celebrant Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Celebrant Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

People I will, with God’s help. Celebrant Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin,

repent and return to the Lord? People I will, with God’s help.

Page 7: Trinity Episcopal Church - Trinity Church

November 1, 2020 – All Saints Sunday – Year A – Page 6

Celebrant Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?

People I will, with God’s help. Celebrant Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as

yourself? People I will, with God’s help. Celebrant Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect

the dignity of every human being? People I will, with God’s help. The Celebrant concludes the Renewal of Vows as follows May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

* Prayers of the People The Deacon (when present) introduces the prayers, saying:

In communion with all the saints, and in the name of Jesus, let our prayers ascend to God whose children we are, saying: Hear us, O Holy One. For the Church: _____, that we may daily turn to God for strength, vision, and the courage to be faithful disciples. Hear us, O Holy One. For this parish family, especially: _____, that we who share in the heavenly feast may be joined together with those of all times and ages in one Body of faith, service, and witness to God. Hear us, O Holy One. For our several ministries especially: _____, and our Mission of the Month: _____. Hear us, O Holy One. For those who hold us in their prayers especially: _____. Hear us, O Holy One. For peace in our world, and in our cities, remembering: _____, and all in authority, that God will open our minds and hearts to respect the dignity of every human being. Hear us, O Holy One. For those affected by the fires in California and Colorado, those on the Gulf Coast impacted by storms, and those living in the shadows of fear, violence, and poverty, that they may be kept safe in the hollow of God's hand. Hear us, O Holy One. For this nation and all who will be voting, that they may be guided by the Holy Spirit, and make choices which honor our baptismal vows and affirm God's Way of Love. Hear us, O Holy One.

For refugees, immigrants and all who live in a strange land, and for all those who are in need of our prayers, remembering especially_____, that they may find refuge and healing in God's care. Hear us, O Holy One. In thanksgiving for those who have gone before us in the faith, that we may be inspired by them to greater efforts to live the Gospel and trust in God's gift of salvation. Hear us, O Holy One.

The people may add their own petitions and thanksgivings. Lifting our voices with all creation, with Mary, the God-bearer, with the spirits of the blessed, with the holy patriarchs, prophets, and martyrs, and all the saints and souls of God, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Holy One we give praise and glory. Celebrant: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, for the triumph of Christ in the lives of your saints. Receive the prayers we offer this day and make us one with all your saints in the fullness of Christ's body, so that we may rise again to glory with him who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

* Confession of Sin Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our Neighbor: Leader and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant gives the absolution. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

* The Peace (All greet one another from a distance with a bow) The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

THE HOLY COMMUNION * Offertory Hymn: 287 (1-5, 8) (Sung by the Trinity Virtual Choir) Sine Nomine 1. For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! 2. Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might: thou, Lord their Captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! 3. O may thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! 4. O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! 5. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! 8. From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia, Alleluia!

* Eucharistic Prayer A: (Please remain standing throughout The Great Thanksgiving.)

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

The Celebrant says the Proper Preface.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: (sung by the Trinity Virtual Choir) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Page 10: Trinity Episcopal Church - Trinity Church

November 1, 2020 – All Saints Sunday – Year A – Page 9

The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Page 11: Trinity Episcopal Church - Trinity Church

November 1, 2020 – All Saints Sunday – Year A – Page 10

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

* The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread. A period of silence is kept.

[Alleluia.] Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. [Alleluia.] The Celebrant says the following invitation: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

The People will receive communion as they leave the sanctuary at the end of the service.

* Pre-Communion Prayer The Celebrant says: Let us pray. People and Celebrant say: Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you feed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

All: (The Assembly joins in saying this prayer together.) Lord Jesus, who is the Word made flesh, from the beginning of creation you named and claimed us for yourself. Look with kindness upon your servant, Raymond, who leaves this community, marked by your cross, fed by your word, filled with our care, and sent to be your presence to all he meets. Guide him on the way, and bless him with your wisdom, that he may be a word of hope for a world in need, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. * Closing Hymn: 556 (1-3, 5 &7)(Sung by the Trinity Virtual Choir) Marion 1. Rejoice, ye pure in heart! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! Your clear hosannas raise, and alleluias loud; while answering echoes upward float, like wreaths of incense cloud. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, give thanks and sing. 5. Still lift your standard high, still march in form array, as warriors through the darkness toil, till dawns the golden day. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice give thanks and sing. 7. Then on, ye pure in heart! Rejoice, give thanks and sing! Your glorious banner wave on high the cross of Christ your King. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, give thanks and sing.

However, if you are not comfortable with Realm, please reach out for assistance to get registered. Even with the 25-person capacity per service, we generally have seats to spare each week. If you use Realm, you will see how many people are signed up to attend the service (or ‘Event’), and you can sign up on Saturday or even Sunday morning until 8:30 a.m. as long as there are spaces remaining. So, how can you register to attend in-person worship? Register on Realm at any time before the start of a service....OR During the work week, contact the parish office at 610-253-0792 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or [email protected] After the church office closes on Friday, call Nina Olieman - until 8:30 AM on Sunday morning - at 610-253-2143. Please be assured that we can and will accommodate walk-ins and visitors on Sunday mornings! We look to maximize attendance at our services, so that all parishioners, families and children will come and enjoy participation in in-person worship. If you have any question, please reach out to the parish office either by email: [email protected] or by phone: 610-253-0792.

Please Let Us Care For You: If you are ill in the hospital or at home, please call the Parish Office: 610-253-0792 and let us know (or have a family member or friend do it for you) so that we can hold you in prayer, visit you, bring the Sacraments, and provide you with pastoral care. Both St. Luke's and Lehigh Valley Health Network will allow clergy visits in cases of emergency only during the COVID-19 situation. It is essential that you let us know if you are being hospitalized. In some cases, when access is limited, the clergy (Fr. Andrew, Fr. Raymond, or Deacon Fran) will coordinate with the Pastoral Care staffs of the various hospitals for visits. If at all possible, please let the clergy know in advance so that we may meet you for anointing and the Sacrament of the Sick before you are admitted or go in for your procedure. Likewise, let us know when you are discharged from the hospital, transferred to rehab, or sent home. Hospitals will not inform us of a discharge or to where a patient is sent after they leave the hospital. Please note that during this time, Lay Eucharistic Visitors will not be visiting either in homes, hospitals, or skilled nursing facilities. If a visit is needed, contact one of the clergy or call the office.

guidelines to protect our clients and each other. Volunteer groups are also being trained and scheduled through August. If you have any questions, call Gretchen Reed at 484-695-1476. November Mission of the Month–Project of Easton: Their mission is to build a better community by helping people help themselves and providing them with support and instruction in the skills needed to break the cycle of poverty and achieve their goals. ProJeCt is a faith-based ministry. The Pro stands for Protestant, the Je for Jewish, and the Ct for Catholic. ProJeCt believes that education is key to helping people help themselves. They invest in research-based, rigorously evaluated school and workforce preparation services that teach clients the skills needed to increase their upward mobility. ProJeCt impacts over 5000 people every year. Their literacy programs help children learn better in school and benefit their parents in acquiring jobs that can sustain their families. They also have a food bank that provides nutritious food and personal care items for their clients. ProJeCt has recently requested that Trinity provide PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY for their food pantry instead of CEREAL, for the time being. Our church has been a big help to their ministry in providing food for their clients, and they greatly appreciate our participation.

PB&J Update At the request of the ProJeCt of Easton food pantry, Trinity has been asked to temporarily switch from being the "Cereal Church" to being the "PB & J Church". Gifts of any texture Peanut Butter and any flavor of Jelly or Jam will be accepted. They are asking for donations of household size jars of each (not commercial sizes). If you have been collecting cereal at home, do not hesitate to donate it. All nonperishable food items will be gratefully accepted, but going forward, please switch to buying PB&J for this ministry. You may bring food donations to the Trinity office and we will deliver them to ProJeCt. Please call the office at 610-253-0792 to alert us that you are going to be coming. So far, even with our closure, we collected a total of 34 jars of Peanut Butter, 44 Jars of Jelly and 11 boxes of cereal for the month of October. Every cent you spend on nutritious nonperishable food goes directly to help those in need at the ProJeCt food pantry in downtown Easton. Thanks to everyone who has stepped up to help. We can now be called the PB&J Church! Blessings, Mission and Outreach

One Step

Further November 1, 2020

All Saints Sunday Revelation 7:9-17 Instead of an Old Testament reading this All Saints’ Day, we hear one of the seven visions given to John. He tells of the vast number of holy men and women who served God faithfully in their lifetime and now surround the heavenly throne of glory.

1 John 3:1-3 We do not know what our life after death will be like. Our faith is that we shall see and know completely the Christ whom we follow here, and so we shall be like him.

Matthew 5:1-12 In these strange paradoxes we call the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us who are the holy people in God’s sight, the ones who will find his blessings as his kingdom comes.

‘Agnus Day’ by Pastor Jim Wetzstein The really famous martyrs have publicists.

A Stewardship Reflection… A favorite hymn, often used at All Saints Day celebrations is # 287, “For all the Saints…” Who are the saints now on the “Godward” side of your life who encourage you to give thanks, not only for their lives by your examples of loving discipleship, but also by your willingness to be ever grateful for all they know (and you know) God has given you? This is our particular day to remember all the blessed saints – especially those who have gone before us here, having served God faithfully in this parish. They were good and diligent stewards – quietly and continually supporting His work in many ways while living lives of integrity and courage. May it be yet another of God’s gifts for us to join them at the banquet when our days here are done. Let light perpetual shine upon them.
