Three Words! | Help Listen / Read the news story and choose the correct word from the three spaces.

HINT: Look at words close to the missing word to help!

413 CYCLING - TO STAY SAFE! 1 Nestled in the south of Berlin and with the River a: Danube/Weser/Spree to the

east is the district of Kreuzberg. Once the poorest area of West Berlin when the city and the country was divided into East and b: South/North/West, Kreuzberg now thrives as a cultural melting pot. Since reunification the district has also remained the centre of the Berlin music scene. With a club for every taste from rap, breakdance, punk, techno, rave and many, many more. It has also emerged, since the COVID-19 lockdown, as the home for a new type of traffic – safe distance c: walking/cycling/running!

2 Concerned by how to prevent COVID-19 from exploding in Kreuzberg – home to 153,000 Berliners, the local authorities began a scheme of ‘pop-up’ bike lanes. This was done by creating new, c: wider/narrower/safer bike lanes that help cyclists keep the required 1.5 metre distance from each other. This was in response not only to try to d: escalate/depress/limit the spread of COVID-19, but to create an eco-friendlier, less petrol-reliant lifestyle for Kreuzberg e: residents/locals/Kreuzbergers.

3 The ‘pop-up’ cycling lanes were first introduced on March 27th as a pilot scheme limited only to Kreuzberg. However, due to the success of the scheme more pop-up lanes have been created around Berlin. The Kreuzberg Council has used a low-tech approach to f: creating/making/building the bike lanes. They have simply recycled luminous removable tape and spray-on road markings. So popular have the bike ‘pop-up’ lanes become, that residents in 133 other g: German/French/Dutch cities have submitted applications for their own ‘pop-up’ bike lanes.

4 A further reason for introducing more bike lanes is new research linking air pollution to higher COVID-19 death rates. The German NGO - Environmental Action Germany’s chairperson said, “Coronavirus is showing us that h: clean/dirty/fresh air is an asset. It is now especially important for people to move safely on their bikes and clean, fresh air will help them do this.” However, the scheme has not been i: exactly/very/universally popular in Germany, resistance has come from the pro-business Free Democratic Party. They described the pop-up bike lanes as “unnecessarily provocative and of j: little/great/significant practical use.”

5 ENW has been fortunate enough to visit Kreuzberg on half-a-dozen occasions – the first in 2014 and have even cycled in the district! The idea of ‘pop-up’ bike lanes seems both a k: smarter/healthier/greedier and environmentally friendly mode of transport. Especially as the world slowly emerges from COVID-19 lockdowns. But, do you agree podcasters?
