Emporia State to Bring Its MLS Program to IdahoThere was more than enough interest from the Idaho library community for Emporia State University to bring its library science program to the Gem State.

Students will be able to earn their Master of Library Science (MLS) degree through Emporia’s blended classroom approach, which includes face-to-face and online classes. This hybrid MLS program allows students the flexibility of the online component, along with the interactive, in-person classroom experience that is missing from many programs.

Classes are scheduled to begin September 2019. The face-to-face classes will be held at the Boise office of the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL), and they will be taught by faculty of Emporia State University.

Financial assistance may be available through the ICfL’s continuing education program and/or Emporia State University in the form of scholarships.

2019 YALSA Webinars Paid For by the ICfL

The Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) has paid for all Idaho libraries to have access to the members-only webinars from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) for 2019.

For the link to gain free access to these webinars, contact ICfL Youth Services Consultant Jennifer Redford at 208-334-2150 or via email at: [email protected].

Calling All Campers

In June, the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) will host a three-day Futures Camp, where Idaho library staff will gather to dream, envision, and shape the future of libraries. The site of the event will be the new Cruzen-Murray Library on the historic College of Idaho campus in Caldwell.

Campers will be chosen through a competitive application process. For more information, please visit: https://libraries.idaho.gov/continuing-education/idaho-libraries-futures-camp/.

New (ish) to the Crew

Do your staff and patrons travel your library’s internet like they are cruising down the open road in a sports car, or is it more like a Southern California freeway -- gridlock?

If your broadband could use a boost, there are programs to make that happen -- at little or no cost.

E-rate is the federal mechanism through which libraries and schools obtain high-speed internet access at a rate discounted from the provider of between 20 and 90 percent. In Idaho, the portion of the internet access costs not discounted (covered) under E-rate can then be eligible for reimbursement from the state under its Education Opportunity Resource (EOR) Act.

For example, if a library applied and received a discount on its internet bill of 80 percent under E-rate, it would then apply to get the remaining 20 percent reimbursed under Idaho’s EOR program -- bringing the library’s cost to zero.

For more information and/or assistance, contact the Idaho Commission for Libraries’ Broadband Consultant Dylan Baker at 208-334-2150 or via email at [email protected].

For additional information on broadband, including the Broadband Toolkit Improvement Program (BTIP), visit: https://libraries.idaho.gov/broadband. The workbook included in the BTIP initiative contains definitions, explanations, and examples. In addition, the workbook is a good broadband resource for the library to complete and keep on hand. The information is helpful when training new staff, discussing the library’s needs with legislators and local officials, and much more!

Is Your Internet Traffic Gridlocked?

Recently, the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) has welcomed several new staff members.

Randy Kemp joined the ICfL as its program supervisor. Kemp’s work focuses on establishing and/or strengthening the ICfL’s partnerships among Idaho state agencies, nonprofits, business communities, and Idaho libraries, with the goal of building the capacity and influence of libraries in their local communities, as well as at the regional and state levels. Kemp joined the ICfL from The Community Library in Ketchum, where he was the regional history digital collections and systems librarian.

Deana Brown is the ICfL’s emerging trends consultant, which is a newly created role designed to help Idaho’s libraries be “future ready.” Brown will also support the ICfL Make It program, STEAM projects, and other initiatives related to current and future trends, such as mid-life adults. Brown previously worked for several public and academic libraries, most recently at Boise State University, where she was an assistant professor/librarian.

Jennifer Redford joined the ICfL as a youth services consultant, focusing on teen programs and services, along with early literacy initiatives. A native Idahoan, Redford previously worked for Boise Public Library, most recently as a branch librarian.

Angela Lints is a new member of the ICfL support staff. She assists with various programs and helps to ensure they run smoothly. Lints moved to Idaho from the Sunshine State (Florida).

Idaho has been selected as one of 14 states to partner with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to bring the “NASA @ My Library” program to libraries throughout the Gem State, particularly those in small and/or rural areas. The traveling activity kits will be utilized by library staff to enrich their programming related to earth and space science.

Goals of the program include using the lure of space to interest children in math and science and to expose youngsters in isolated and/or underserved areas of the state to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in fun, engaging ways.

The Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) will manage the program for the state. The “NASA @ My Library” initiative runs through December 2019.

There are two NASA kits available for check out. Kit #1 is the “Sun-Earth-Moon Connections Kit.” It focuses on activities and experiences that better help patrons understand their place in space and how the sun and moon impact our planet. Kit #2 is the “Be a NASA Detective: Expanding Your Senses” kit. It focuses on activities and experiences that help patrons be more comfortable using tools of science and making predictions based on their observations.
