Ensembles and Group Lessons String Ensembles There are three string groups at CHSM (see below) and all are directed by Bryan Tyler. Each ensemble performs at school concert(s) during the school year. Students at CHSM have the option of playing either violin, viola, cello, or bass in a string ensemble. All are welcome to participate regardless of age or grade. Class sizes can range from about 3 to 10 students and students will meet with Mr. Tyler once per week. New members are encouraged to apply at the beginning of the school year. Once enrolled, an instructor evaluation will be scheduled to determine placement. A schedule for all classes will be determined based on the availability of applicants for either Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays after school. For more information and questions about placement, please contact [email protected]. The CHSM Open Strings CHSM Open Strings is geared towards students that recently studied violin in group class with Ms. Maggie or completed at least one year of private instruction on a string instrument. Open Strings members learn to coordinate music reading skills with playing violin. Through fun games and activities students in this ensemble expand and diversify their playing skills and repertoire. The Open Strings will perform at least once during the school year at Strings Assembly. The CHSM Strings Troupe CHSM String Troupe is our intermediate level group and is recommended for students that currently study from Suzuki book 1 or an equivalent method. Members will play one octave scales and arpeggios together. Through fun repertoire, students will develop greater ease with note and rhythm identification, bow distribution, and dynamics. Reading music will be required, though time will be offered in class to help students label their parts. Notes will need to be reviewed during practice at home and in private lessons. The String Troupe will perform regularly at school assemblies. The CHSM String Ensemble CHSM String Ensemble is the most advanced level of string ensemble playing at CHS. Students will be expected to play at the level of Suzuki book 2 or above. Together members will play one and two octave major and minor scales up to 3 sharps/flats. Reading music will be required, though time will be offered in class to help students label their parts. Notes will need to be reviewed at home and in private lessons. Repertoire will occasionally be two or three pages in length and third position will occasionally be required for students playing 1st violin, cello, and bass. The String Ensemble will perform regularly at school assemblies. Group Lessons A variety of group lessons are taught by various instructors. A minimum number of students available on the same day/time will be required to begin the class. Club Glee! led by Jessica Kion Club Glee! is back for a third year! Students join together to memorize and perform popular music with choreography. Club Glee is open to students from grade 2-6 regardless of musical training. Younger students are also welcome and can be accepted with an approval from Ms. Kion. The day and time is determined by teacher and student availability.
