PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to Merrimac State High School. I am confident you will find our school’s staff and students approachable and friendly. We place learning first for all our students, provide high quality teaching and a curriculum which is responsive to the needs of the individual learners. With a genuine spirit of cooperation and support between school and home this will be some of your child’s best years of learning.

Merrimac State High School was established in 1979. It is one of just 30 schools in Australia, 400 across the world to be awarded prestigious international accreditation from the Council of International Schools. This five year accreditation cycle means our school is constantly consolidating best practice in all areas of school leadership and management.

Our philosophy emphasises building positive relationships, valuing differences, life-long learning and personal contribution to school, family and community. We aim to have all students settle quickly into their new school and begin to explore what is on offer academically, socially and in co-curricular areas. Learning in our school will build awareness, excitement and confidence. Three “R”s are very important, we stand for the values of Respect, Responsibility and Reliability. We will teach and share the ways that these values “live” in our school through everyday practices in both junior and senior school and via the personal development program, “Merrimac Minds Matter”.

Students flourish when they are curious about the world around them, engage in quality learning and take on positions of responsibility. Through student leadership opportunities inside and outside the classroom students are preparing to become active, confident and responsible citizens. There are countless opportunities for your child to be involved: Student Council, Junior School & Sports Leaders, Culture Leaders, and Phoenix Captains.

Outstanding facilities and excellent learning resources support quality teaching and learning. Significant financial investment has been made to develop world class buildings and extensive undercover and play areas. State of the art science laboratories enhance our learning environment and are used regularly by all students. A spacious, leafy green environment and expansive playing fields and sporting equipment encourage students to enjoy their break time in games and activities. A twenty-five metre pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, handball and table tennis facilities are wonderful resources for class, lunchtime and co-curricular use.

I look forward to partnering with you on this exciting journey of learning as we work towards achieving our school motto “Pride in Excellence”.

Yours sincerely

Mr Chris Tobin Principal

STATE SCHOOL CONSENT FORM Introduction to the State School Consent Form (attached) for Merrimac State High School This letter is to inform you about how we will use your child’s personal information and student materials. It outlines: • what information we record

• how we will use student materials created during your child’s enrolment.

Examples of personal information which may be used and disclosed (subject to consent) include part of a person’s name, image/photograph, voice/video recording or year level. Your child’s student materials:

• are created by your child whether as an individual or part of a team

• may identify each person who contributed to the creation

• may represent Indigenous knowledge or culture.

Purpose of the consent It is the school’s usual practice to take photographs or record images of students and occasionally to publish limited personal information and student materials for the purpose of celebrating student achievement and promoting the school and more broadly celebrating Queensland education. To achieve this, the school may use newsletters, its website, traditional media, social media or other new media as listed in the ‘Media Sources’ section below. The State School Consent Form may, at your discretion, provide consent for personal information and a licence for the student materials to be published online or in other public forums. It also allows your child’s personal information and student materials to be presented in part or alongside other students’ achievements. The school needs to receive consent in writing before it uses or discloses your child’s personal information or student materials in a public forum. The attached form is a record of the consent provided. It should be noted that in some instances the school may be required by the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) or by law to record, use or disclose the student’s personal information or materials without consent (e.g. assessment of student materials does not require further consent). Voluntary There will not be any negative repercussions for not completing the State School Consent Form or for giving limited consent. All students will continue to receive their education regardless of whether consent is given or not. Consent may be limited or withdrawn Consent may be limited or withdrawn at any time by you. If you wish to limit or withdraw consent please notify the school in writing (by email or letter). The school will confirm the receipt of your request via email if you provide an email address.

If in doubt, the school may treat a notice to limit consent as a comprehensive withdrawal of consent until the limit is clarified to the school’s satisfaction. Due to the nature of the internet and social media (which distributes and copies information), it may not be possible for all copies of information (including images of student materials) once published by consent, to be deleted or restricted from use. The school may take down content that is under its direct control, however, published information and materials cannot be deleted and the school is under no obligation to communicate changes to consent with other entities/ third parties. Media sources used Following is a list of online and social media websites and traditional media sources where the school may publish your child’s personal information or student materials subject to your consent. School website: merrimacshs.eq.edu.au/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/merrimacshs/ YouTube: Instagram: Twitter: Other: Local newspaper School newsletter Traditional and online media, printed materials, digital platforms’ promotional materials, presentations and displays. The State School Consent Form does not extend to P&C run social media accounts or activities, or external organisations. Duration The consent applies for the period of enrolment or another period as stated in the State School Consent Form, or until you decide to limit or withdraw your consent. During the school year there may be circumstances where the school or Department of Education may seek additional consent. Who to contact To return a consent, express a limited consent or withdraw consent please contact Merrimac State High School, (07) 5595 8666 or email [email protected] Merrimac State High School should be contacted if you have any questions regarding consent. STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME APPLICATION

Whilst the cost of providing instruction, administration and facilities for the education of a student at a state school is met by the State, a parent is directly responsible for providing the student with textbooks and other resources for a student's use while attending school.

As a service to assist parents with the cost of these educational resources, Merrimac State High School has chosen to operate a Student Resource Scheme (the Scheme). The purpose of the Scheme is to provide parents with a cost effective alternative to purchasing textbooks, resources, consumables and/or materials from elsewhere, through reduced prices gained from the school's bulk purchasing processes.

A Student Resource Scheme enables a parent to enter into written agreement with the School that, in return for payment of a specified annual participation fee, provides for the participating student's temporary use of prescribed textbooks and other resources and/or for the purchase by the parent of consumables and materials for the student's use. Participation in the Scheme is voluntary, and no obligation is placed on a parent to participate. A parent's decision to participate is based on consideration of the value afforded by the Scheme. The Merrimac State High School Scheme provides excellent value for money. A parent who does not wish to join the Scheme is responsible for providing the student with the items that would otherwise have been provided to the student by the Scheme to enable the student to engage with the curriculum.

Please ensure you have read the full terms and conditions relating to the Student Resource Scheme. All parents and carers are required to complete the relevant section (both participants and non-participants) indicating your preference. Participants of the Student Resource Scheme are required to fulfil their full financial obligations.

User Pays Fees

Schools are able to charge fees for educational services, including materials and consumables, not defined as instruction, administration and facilities. User Pays fees are charged for subjects where the instruction is extended through providing practical learning experiences in excess of materials provided by school grants. Subjects which attract fees are clearly outlined in each of the subject area sections in the Subject Selection information available on the School website (a paper copy may be requested if you do not have access to the internet).

Why Pay Student Resource Scheme before commencement of the school year?

We ask for all parents and carers to pay fees or elect to participate in our payment plan before the start of the school year so that student learning materials and books may be purchased early and discounts secured through early payment and bulk ordering. All students will then have the opportunity of accessing their resources when they commence school.

Payment Arrangements and Methods

There is a range of payment methods available to parents and carers. Statements are emailed to families on the last day of each month, so that you are always aware of your account balances. Payment of the Student Resource Scheme is due each November, prior to the commencement of the school year.
