Reporting IllnessPlease report your child’s illness daily, by 9.00am in the following ways;

• Email – [email protected]

• Phone – Dedicated absence line 01473 618997 and leave a message, and PLEASE include symptoms. Without symptoms we cannot authorise the absence. Furthermore, ‘poorly, ‘unwell’, ‘ill’ does not help us track whether contagious illnesses are going around the school.

• Isolated, minor ailments = Please send them to school unless part of an underlying health condition. E.g. symptoms of the common cold, head ache, period pain, cough. (If persistent, consider seeing a medical professional.)

Medical appointments• Make routine medical appointments out of school hours/

towards the end of the day if possible.

• If an appointment is prearranged, let the school know prior to the date to save a truancy call.

• Show any letter/ appointment slip/ text confirmation – if attendance is poor you can be required to provide this evidence – we update our records accordingly if you show evidence.

• Remind your child to sign out/in at reception. We expect your child to attend school prior/after an appointment if possible.

Tips for September• Establish a good evening/ morning routine prior to September (e.g. train that body

clock back to appropriate hours!)

• Be enthusiastic about school! Share your own (positive!) stories about school, ask questions about what they know already about KHS after their introduction days etc.

• Be wary of signing up to too many extra-curricular activities in the 1st term –consider letting them settle into the routine of secondary school to establish good routines first.

• Teach your child/ren to have their school bag and uniform ready the night before.

• Invest in an alarm clock for them over the summer – teach them to be responsible for setting it! Not using mobile phone as their alarm … keep this downstairs.

• Lead by example – be punctual in your daily lives, show resilience when you are feeling a bit ‘under the weather’, be prepared daily. Essentially they will model your behaviour and so it will be a lot easier if you show them how it is done!

At Kesgrave High School we have a

strong team of Peer Mentors.

• Peer Mentors will be attached to a Year 7 form group every day for the first two weeks of school in September: navigate, familiarise, lessons, canteen, support.

• They will have duties at break and lunchtimes – available to talk if they have any worries or concerns about anything at school.

• Fully trained – listening, signposting, solution focussed.

• The Peer Mentors will be present at least once a week during form time throughout the year, to help deliver form time activities and provide a different aspect to form time.
