The buses have a cost of $6 pesos in Puerto Vallarta and a bit more if you go out of town. “Centro” goes through downtown and “Túnel” goes around town. Every bus has where it is headed written on its windshield.

TelephoneTo call back home, your best option is the Telmex phone booths located all over town. You can buy a LADATEL card from 30 to 100 pesos at many convenience stores and they have the best rates by far:

Crossing StreetsEven though there are signs on the sidewalks, streetlights and zebra crossings, we strongly recommend you to look both ways every time you are going to cross a street. Mexicans are cool and fun, but somehow chaotic, so better not try your luck. Take special care with public buses.

There are plenty of “Cyber-Cafes” where you can use a computer for as little as 10 pesos an hour, with headphones, microphone and even a webcam. Now, there are also many places with WiFi, so if you brought your own laptop it would only cost you the price of a good latte...

LaundryIf you are not in one of the big hotels and have a lot of laundry to do, there are many small laundry places which provide the service at a very affordable price, 12 pesos per kilo (2.2 lbs), and some even have “same day service”.

SportsIf you have had enough of lying down by the beach or pool and want to practice some “free of charge” activities, you can pass by the Municipal Stadium (check Hotel Zone Map on page 34) and get into a “pick up” game of soccer, it’s easier to join in if you bring your own ball. There are also softball, baseball, basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a nice running track.

The common rate for tips in restaurants in Mexico, goes from 10 to 15%. A few places add a charge for “service” so don’t feel obligated to tip in these cases. For guys performing on public buses, airport baggage handlers, supermarket grocery baggers and activity guide tours tipping is expected.

ElectricityThe same electrical system that is used in the US and Canada, is used in Mexico: 110 volts - 60 Hz. But most outlets in Puerto Vallarta are of the old two-prong variety, so it’s a good idea to buy an adapter for all your three-prong electronic devices, at any local supermarket.

WaterTap water in Puerto Vallarta is one of the best in Mexico and comparable to US and Canada standards. Anyway, most locals drink bottled water, so you might want to follow their example. For cooking, Enjoy recommends to use a disinfectant such as “Microdyn” to purify the water you use while handling food.

Marietas IslandsUNESCO’s Biosphere ReserveAn amazingly beautiful archipelago made up of two islands and two islets with such an extraordinary biodiversity that UNESCO declared them a Biosphere Reserve converting them into a protected wildlife sanctuary. They are located in an area of confluence of different water currents, making them a perfect habitat for plenty of animal and vegetal species.

Since the famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau did some research in the waters surrounding the islands, they became a hot spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, with many tours offering the opportunity to watch giant manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, octopus and sea horses.

Did you know? ?The Blue Footed Booby bird can only be found in two places on Earth, the Galapagos Islands and the Marietas Islands.

¿Sabías qué?El Alcatraz o Pájaro bobo patiazul sólo se encuentra en dos lugares del planeta, las Islas Galápagos y las Islas Marietas.

Un hermoso archipiélago conformado por dos islas y dos islotes con una biodiversidad tan extraordinaria que la UNESCO declaró el lugar Reserva de la Biósfera, convirtiéndolo en un santuario protegido para la vida silvestre. Se encuentran localizadas en un área de confluencia de distintas corrientes marinas, haciendo de las islas el hábitat perfecto para innumerable cantidad de especies animales y vegetales.

Desde que el famoso oceanógrafo Jacques Cousteau realizara investigaciones en sus aguas, las islas se volvieron lugar favorito para la práctica del snórkel y el buceo, con muchas compañías ofreciendo tours a las islas y la oportunidad de contemplar manta rayas gigantes, tortugas marinas, delfines, ballenas jorobadas, pulpos y caballitos de mar.

Bronze sculpture by Rafael Zamarripa, an artist from Guadalajara, that has become an icon of Puerto Vallarta. The statue was placed originally at Las Pilitas at the end of Los Muertos beach, but it got knocked down by waves and wind. In 1976, Zamarripa himself made a new version of the sculpture which was

placed at its actual position in the Malecón.

It’s part of a collection of sculptures that make of the Malecón of Puerto Vallarta,

the most accomplished one of all the beach towns in México, El Caballito (the little horse) became the favorite of

locals and tourists, may be for its innocence or simplicity, but we can say for sure that Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be the same without it.

Escultura en bronce del artista tapatío Rafael Zamarripa, que se ha convertido en un ícono de Puerto Vallarta. La estatuta fue colocada originalmente en Las Pilitas al final de la playa de Los Muertos, pero fue derribada por el viento y las olas. En 1976, Zamarripa hizo una nueva versión de la escultura que se colocó en su posición actual en el Malecón.

Forma parte de una colección de esculturas que hacen del Malecón de Puerto Vallarta el más logrado de las playas del país. El Caballito se volvió favorito de la población local y de los turistas, quizá por su inocencia o esa atractiva simplicidad, pero lo cierto es que sin él, Puerto Vallarta no sería el mismo.

Vallarta Botanical GardensA living museum

This place is one of my personal favorites of Puerto Vallarta, Bahía de Banderas and the Riviera Nayarit. Away from civilization and up in the mountains where the heat is not as intense, just by a river, there is a “living museum”, a place where nature is felt in every corner and visitors can reconnect with it.

Enjoy had an interesting chat with Robert Price, curator of the Botanical Gardens and the man who started it all in 2005. He told us that even though he had always loved nature, he had no idea of how to develop botanical gardens. But he knew what he wanted and the process was long and hard. Nevertheless, the Gardens have not stopped growing since then, and today they are becoming what he once dreamt they would be. Robert has empashized portraying Mexican nature, and the Gardens contains 80% native Mexican plants in their formidable collection. Currently under construction is the impressive Conservatory for the collection of native Mexican orchids, which is planned for completion by next winter.

Los Jardines Botánicos de Vallarta: Un museo viviente

Este lugar es uno de mis favoritos de toda el área de Puerto Vallarta, Bahía de Banderas y la Riviera Nayarit. Alejado de la civilización, elevado en las montañas donde el aire es más fresco y el calor menos intenso, justo al lado de un río se encuentra este impresionante “museo viviente”, un lugar donde la naturaleza se siente en cada rincón y los visitantes pueden reconectarse con ella.

Enjoy tuvo una interesante charla con Robert Price, conservador de los Jardines Botánicos y el hombre que hizo posible su nacimiento, allá por 2005. Robert tiene un gran interés en promover y reflejar la naturaleza mexicana y por tal razón mantiene un 80% de plantas originarias de México, dentro de su inmensa colección. Asimismo, está construyendo un nuevo invernadero de orquídeas, donde planea tener la más completa colección de orquídeas en México y que debe estar listo para la próxima temporada alta.

But the Gardens are not only about plants and, as any important Botanical Gardens in the world, this one has a high end restaurant on the upper floor of a beautiful old Mexican style Hacienda, sitting on a cliff with a fantastic view of the river below and the mountains above. The cuisine is typical Mexican, with handmade tortillas and a wood fired brick oven where dishes from all over the country are cooked. There are also numerous pathways for trekking through the mountains or walking down to the river for a swim in the crystal clear water.

Pero el lugar no es sólo sobre plantas, como en cualquier Jardín Botánico de importancia en el mundo, éste cuenta con un restaurant de excelente calidad, en lo alto de una colina, con una gran vista del río Horcones y de las montañas. La cocina es típica mexicana, con tortillas hechas a mano y un horno de leña donde son cocinados platillos de todas las regiones del país. Hay también diferentes senderos para internarse en las montañas o bajar al río y echarse un chapuzón en sus cristalinas aguas.

Beautiful beach surrounded by an amazing tropical forest. There you can take the “pangas” (water taxis) to Las Ánimas, Majahuitas, Yelapa and Quimixto. While there, don’t miss the chance to swim in its tranquil waters and eat some great seafood. It’s 15 miles South of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Barra de Navidad and you can take a bus from Basilio Badillo St.

Hermosa playa rodeada por una paradisíaca jungla tropical. De aquí salen las pangas hacia Las Ánimas, Majahuitas, Yelapa y Quimixto. Mientras espera la salida de su panga, no pierda la oportunidad de nadar en sus tranquilas aguas y comer unos deliciosos mariscos. Se encuentra 25 km al sur de Puerto Vallarta por la carretera a Barra de Navidad y si viajas en autobús puedes tomar uno en la calle Basilio Badillo.

Islas MarietasSmall group of islands declared by UNESCO as a “Biosphere Reserve” for its extraordinary biodiversity. Perfect place to watch the whales and practice scuba diving. To get to the islands you have to go first to El Anclote, a town 25 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Punta Mita. From there you can get a water taxi to the Marietas or you can take an organized tour.

Pequeño conjunto de islas declarado por la UNESCO “Reserva especial de la Biósfera” por su extraordinaria biodiversidad. Lugar perfecto para ver a las ballenas y para practicar el buceo. Para llegar a las islas hay que ir primero a El Anclote, un pueblo a 25 minutos al norte de Puerto Vallarta por la carretera a Punta Mita. Desde ahí salen las lanchas a las Marietas.

Large beach of fine sand, favorite of those who practice surf, kitesurf and windsurf. It’s not a very crowded beach, although popular with locals. It’s located 15 miles Northwest of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Punta Mita. If you take a bus, ask the driver for Punta Mita, it costs $15 pesos.

Extensa playa de fina arena, favorita de los practicantes del surf, kitesurf y windsurf. No es una playa muy concurrida, pero popular entre los locales. Se encuentra a 25 km al noroeste de Puerto Vallarta por la carretera a Punta Mita. Si viaja en autobús, el costo es de $15 pesos, sólo asegúrese de que el autobús lleve dirección a Punta Mita.

A dónde ir...Mismaloya

Small bay surrounded by the jungle, where the Mismaloya river finds the sea. This beach became world famous when John Huston decided to film “The Night of the Iguana” in the 60’s. It’s 13 miles South of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport by the highway to Barra de Navidad.

Hermosa caleta rodeada de selva, donde el río Mismaloya desemboca en el Pacífico. Esta playa se volvió mundialmente famosa cuando John Huston decidió filmar ahí “La Noche de la Iguana” en los años 60’s. Se encuentra a 21 km al sur del Aeropuerto Gustavo Díaz Ordaz siguiendo la carretera a Barra de Navidad.


Yelapa“Place where the waters get together”, is a small town with only a few hotels and very little electricity. Retirement site for artists and meeting point for hippies. It’s 27 miles South of Puerto Vallarta but to get there you need to take a water taxi at Boca de Tomatlán.

Este pueblo tiene una “onda” muy interesante, con mucho extranjero que se ha estab-lecido en el lugar y ha abierto sus propios negocios. The night before, my girl and I decided we wanted to do something different, so we googled (is this a regular verb?) “snorkeling Puerto Vallarta” and there they were, plenty of sites that offered this kind of tour. We easily booked one for next morning.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, the best possible scenario for a day out at sea. The boat was waiting for us at a beach just off the “Malecón”. We were lucky, there were only a couple of guys that were going to scuba dive and us, the snorkeling couple. So, we started the half an hour journey to Los Arcos National Park while having a sandwich, a soft drink and a good chat with the captain of our little but comfy boat.

Once there, the divers got ready first and their immersion deep into the submarine world was so cool. Then it was our turn, with much simpler equipment, just the visor, flippers and snorkel, we jumped out of the boat and started swimming near the biggest of the islets that have become a symbol of Puerto Vallarta. Our instructor started throwing bread to the water and suddenly we were in the middle of a twister of fish. They were right there, we could touch them, all kinds of fish of the most amazing colors, surrounding us in the most surreal of experiences.

We snorkeled, just the two of us, for one hour there and one hour at another spot where we were able to watch a magnificent ray swimming just below our feet, and my girl could even grab a balloon fish. Yes, after a while there were plenty of other boats, bigger boats, full of people who didn´t have the same luck as us and didn´t get a personalized tour, but from our point of view we could see they were enjoying themselves too. After that, we slept on the deck of the boat the whole journey back to the “Malecón”, getting a great sun tan and ready to walk around downtown streets and feel the life of Puerto Vallarta on a Sunday afternoon.

Una vez llegados a nuestro destino, los buzos prepararon su equipo y comenzaron su inmersión a lo profundo del mundo submarino. Entonces, llegó nuestro turno, con un equipo mucho más sencillo, sólo el visor, las aletas y el snórkel, saltamos fuera del bote y empezamos a nadar cerca del más grande de los islotes que se han convertido en un símbolo de Puerto Vallarta. De repente, nuestro instructor, comenzó a tirar migas de pan en el agua y nos vimos rodeados por un colorido remolino de peces de todos los tamaños.

La noche anterior, mi chica y yo decidimos que queríamos hacer algo diferente, así que buscamos en Google “snorkeling Puerto Vallarta” y nos aparecieron numerosos sitios que ofrecían este tipo de tour. Sin muchas complicaciones reservamos uno para la mañana siguiente.

Era una hermosa mañana de domingo, el mejor escenario posible para un día afuera, en el mar. El bote nos esperaba en la playa del Malecón, teníamos suerte, sólo había dos chicos que iban a bucear y nosotros dos, la pareja del snórkel. De esta manera, iniciamos nuestra travesía hasta el Parque Nacional Los Arcos, con un sándwich, un refresco y una buena conversación con el capitán de nuestro pequeño pero cómodo bote.

Un día en el mar



Estaban justo ahí, al alcance de nuestras manos, los podíamos tocar y parecían no tenernos ningún miedo, por un momento olvidamos que estábamos en la superficie, parecía como si realmente estuviéramos buceando con la cercanía de esos peces tan ávidos de nuestro pan. Snorkeleamos solos, por una hora en ese punto y una hora más en otro lugar cercano donde tuvimos la suerte de ver una magnífica mantarraya nadando justo debajo de nuestros pies, e incluso pudimos agarrar un fascinante pez globo. Y sí, después de un tiempo llegaron al lugar numerosos botes más, botes más grandes, llenos de gente que no tuvieron la misma suerte que nosotros y no gozaron de un tour personalizado como el nuestro, pero desde nuestra perspectiva parecía que también se lo estaban pasando muy bien.

Después del segundo chapuzón, dormimos un rato en la cubierta mientras el capitán ponía rumbo hacia el Malecón, donde todavía era buena hora para caminar un rato por las calles del centro y sentir la vida de Puerto Vallarta en una tarde de domingo.

There is something about driving off road that makes you feel free, pumping adrenaline through your veins, while the wind hits your face. Going from the streets of local villages to jungle trails and hidden rivers, finding yourself engulfed by a magic world of intense nature and high speed.

All of that, while riding these cool vehicles, that are not motorcycles, nor cars, but that can take you everywhere, safe and fast. For a place like Vallarta with so many interesting corners, the ATVs are a great option.

Algo tiene el manejar fuera del camino que provoca una sensación de libertad, bombeando adrenalina por las venas, al tiempo que el viento golpea el rostro y nos recuerda cuán vivos estamos. Pasar de las calles empedradas de pequeños pueblos, a senderos que se internan en la densa selva y acompañan caudalosos ríos, sólo para encontrarse de pronto en un mundo mágico de intensa naturaleza y alta velocidad.

Todo esto, sentado en uno de estos vehículos tan interesantes, mitad motocicletas, mitad coches, pero capaces de llevarnos a cualquier lugar, rápido y seguro. Para un lugar como Vallarta, con tantos rincones escondidos esperando ser descubiertos, los ATVs son una gran opción.

Martini

Preparation:

- 1 1/2 - 2 oz gin (or vodka)- 1 tsp dry vermouth- 1 tsp strawberry syrup- Sugar- Strawberries

Rub rim of chilled martini glass with a cut strawberry. Dip rim into a bowl of sugar until evenly coated. Pour Gin/Vodka, vermouth and syrup into a mixing glass with plenty of ice, and stir briskly. Strain into martini glass and drop in a strawberry.

Preparación:

- 1 1/2 - 2 oz de ginebra o vodka- Una cucharada de vermut seco

- Una cucharada de jarabe de fresa- Azúcar- Fresas

Pasa una fresa cortada por el borde de una copa de martini, ahora

escarcha el borde con un plato de azúcar. Sirve Gin/Vodka, vermut y

jarabe, en un mezclador con mucho hielo y agítalo con fuerza. Sírvelo en

la copa de martini y adórnalo con una fresa.

El martini ha sido llamado un “Clásico Americano” y sin duda lo es, aún cuando su fan más famoso sea británico: “Bond, James Bond”. En estos días, suele servirse con vodka, pero el original se servía con ginebra y una aceituna. Sin embargo esto último puede cambiar de acuerdo con el tipo de Martini que estés sirviendo. Nosotros elegimos el de fresa, por la temporada y por el glamour de la bebida.

Nowadays, is normally served with vodka, but the original one came with gin and an olive on top. This can change according to what type of Martini you are serving. I know, when coming to Puerto Vallarta you weren’t thinking about the food, but about the great beaches, the magnificent weather, the outstanding nightlife or just the relaxed Mexican attitude towards life. But now that you are here, why not become a gastronaut? There are few countries in the world where it could be as worthy to do some gastro-tourism such as Mexico. Mexican cuisine is very highly regarded by gourmets all over the world and Puerto Vallarta has an impressive offer of excellent restaurants. We even have a restaurant week and a gourmet festival on a yearly basis, so it might surprise you what you can find while doing some gastro-tourism in Vallarta.

Food from the East (Comida de Oriente)

Japanese cuisine is based on combining staple foods typically rice or noodles, with a soup and okazu (dishes made from fish, meat, vegetable and tofu) to add flavor to the staple food, what is also done with dashi, miso, and soy sauce. The Japanese view of food is not focused on ingredients, but on cooking techniques. This is an interesting twist, because they know and understand the ingredients they have at hand, but for them, the difference is in the way a meal is prepared.

Japan, as an island nation eats a lot of sea food and Buddhism play a part on this, due to its restrictions on meat-eating. Tuna is one of the basic ingredients as it is present seemingly everywhere as dashi stock, usually made with katsuobushi (dried skipjack tuna flakes).

Of course, sushi is the best-known Japanese dish in the world and it has become extremely popular in Mexico, where it has taken a life of its own and is starting to mix with Mexican culinary traditions.

La cocina japonesa se basa en una combinación de alimentos básicos, típicamente arroz o fideos, con una sopa y okazu (platos hechos de pescado, carne, vegetales y tofu), para dar sabor al alimento base, para lo que también se utiliza dashi, miso y salsa de soya. La visión japonesa de la comida no se concentra en los ingredientes, sino en las técnicas para cocinarlos. Esto es un giro interesante, porque los japoneses conocen y entienden los ingredientes que tienen a la mano, pero para ellos, la diferencia estriba en la manera de prepararlos.

Japón, como nación isleña, come mucho pescado y mariscos, tradición que se vio acentuada por el Budismo, que pone ciertas restricciones a la carne roja. El atún es uno de los ingredientes principales ya que se encuentra presente en casi todas partes como dashi, que normalmente está hecho con katsuobushi (hojuelas secas de atún).

Por supuesto, el sushi es el platillo japonés más famoso en el mundo y en México se ha vuelto extremadamente popular, tomando vida propia y comenzando a mezclarse con las tradiciones culinarias mexicanas.

The combination of elements from different culinary traditions is called fusion cuisine. Globalization, brought with it the inevitable mixture of cultures and with that comes the food.

A la combinación de elementos de distintas tradiciones culinarias se le llama cocina fusión. La globalización trajo consigo, quizá inevitablemente, una mezcla de culturas, dentro de lo cual no se podía quedar fuera la comida.

La cocina fusión es una expresión del mundo contemporáneo y promueve la mezcla y la diversidad cultural. Es una cocina global porque sus elementos son representativos de culturas de todo el mundo. Uno de los hechos más interesantes de la cocina fusión es que no existe una cultura dominante.

Quizá el ejemplo más obvio de cocina fusión es la comida Tex-Mex que integra elementos de la gastronomía mexicana con la texana, creando algo completamente nuevo en el proceso. Pero la cocina fusión de hoy, conlleva un sentido más tipo gourmet y es en este estilo de Fusion cuisine, que Vallarta se ha convertido en un referente gastronómico nacional.

One of the most interesting developments associated with fusion cuisine is that no single culture dominates.

Maybe the most obvious example of fusion cuisine would be the Tex-Mex, which integrates elements from Mexican and Texan gastronomy, creating something new in the process. Wine is an important part of Spanish culture and cuisine. The wines from the region of La Rioja have made a name of their own, because of their quality and characteristic flavor.

Rioja wines are normally a blend of various grape varieties, being the best-known and most widely-used variety, the Tempranillo grape. The wines can be either red (tinto), white (blanco) or rosé (rosado).

The “tacos” are the most typical Mexican dish. There might be a Mexican that has never tasted the “Chiles en Nogada” or “Cochinita Pibil”, but every single Mexican has eaten tacos many, many times. A taco is composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded around a filling, and here comes the magic of the taco, this filling can be anything you like! But a good taco will always be accompanied by garnishes such as salsa, cilantro, onions and lime.

1° Cook the chopped meat or chicken in a skillet. At this step you can prepare the meat or chicken in your preferred way (you can do both at the same time!).

2° Heat the tortillas both sides on a grill and then put them inside a “tortillero”, if you don’t have one, put them between two plates to keep them hot. Please, never heat the tortillas in the microwave!.

3° Now you have your main dish ready and your tortillas hot. Take a plate, take one tortilla from the “tortillero”, leave it open on your plate, get some meat or chicken and put it over your tortilla. Now just get everything else, a bit of tomato, onion and a cilantro, add some salsa on top and... a true Mexican will always finish his/her taco squeezing half a lime on it.

4° And that’s it, try to close it folding the tops of the tortilla together, but remember that “taco that gets closed is not a taco”, meaning that everything will drip from it, before even getting near your mouth, but that’s the fun of it...

Yes we know, you’ve never thought of Mexico as a wine producer, rather as a country with great tequila and beer, but the thing is that Mexico is located in the “wine strip”, a region between thirty and fifty degrees North and South of the equator, where all the wine grapes of the world are grown.

Mexico produces really good wines, with some international laureated brands, that export most of their production. So, when dining out in one of the multiple options that Vallarta has to offer, why not ask to the Sommelier of the place for a good Mexican wine?

De acuerdo, sabemos que nunca ha pensado en México como un gran productor de vino, sino más bien como un productor de tequila o de cerveza, pero la realidad es que nuestro país se encuentra localizado en la “franja del vino”, una región acotada entre los treinta y los cincuenta grados al norte y al sur del ecuador, zona donde se cultivan todos los viñedos del mundo.

There is something about chocolate that makes it special, kind of magic some would say. It’s known that the Aztec emperor Moctezuma, drank it as an aphrodisiac; in 16th century Spain, it quickly became a court favorite after the conquerors brought it back home and then it spread all over Europe in a few decades; even today, kids get crazy about it and books and films are made in its honor.

But it all started here, in Mexico, where the ancient Mayas (even though some would say the Olmecs used it before them), discovered how to make chocolate out of the cacao tree, “it was a gift from the gods”, they said.

These days, the finest chocolates are supposed to come from Europe, but you just have to remember that, in Mexico, chocolate has been an important part of civilization for three millennia to make you doubt about those claims.

The goal of yoga is to stop the flow of thoughts and, isn’t that just what we all want when we go out on holidays? Just to stop thinking and worrying about life? Imagine yourself for a moment lying down on a beach, with sunscreen all over your body, wearing sunglasses and the sound of the waves slowly getting to your ears… Where are you at that moment? Far away from the world, you are in peace, you are not worrying about your job, money, mortgage, illness or love, you are just enjoying yourself.

Now imagine that you could do that every single day, that you could achieve that inner peace, in your everyday routine. That’s where yoga comes into the picture, trying to teach you to stop worrying about things over which you don’t have any control, to focus on life, on breathing, on your body and, through different positions and exercises, stop thinking about what makes you unhappy.

El objetivo del yoga es detener los pensamientos ¿y no es eso precisamente lo que todos queremos cuando salimos de vacaciones? ¿Tan sólo dejar de pensar y preocuparnos sobre la vida diaria? Imagínese por un momento descansando en la playa, con sus lentes oscuros bien puestos y el sonido de las olas llegando lentamente hasta sus oídos… ¿Dónde se encuentra en ese momento? It works with basalt stones of various sizes, shapes and weights, they need to be kept heated in clean, sanitized water between 120 to 130°F. The stones are used to impart heat onto the body with a layer of fabric between the skin and the stone.

Banderas Bay has an amazing universe of attractions for visitors and shopping is one of them. Because the region it’s so diverse and offers so many different options for tourists. One can find in the flea market all kinds of typically Mexican souvenirs, or go the bigger malls and get some clothes of renowned international brands, or look for fine art at the extraordinary array of art galleries in the area, or simply buy some beautiful huichol handicraft that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Pablo Neruda used to say that a Mexican market was the most colorful place of all, so you might find interesting to get into that atmosphere and discover what Neruda was talking about.

La Bahía de Banderas es un impresionante universo de atracciones para los visitantes y salir de compras es una de las más interesantes, porque la región tiene tanta diversidad y ofrece tantas cosas distintas a los turistas. You know you have met an artist, a real one, when you find out that his life is just like his work. This is the case with Guillermo Robles, a gifted painter from Mexico City, who has lived a life full of magic and mysticism just like his paintings, always about angels, madonnas and other celestial beings. His work has taken him all around North America, being a success in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Montreal, Canada. But he keeps being just the same simple guy from the Garden of Art in Mexico City, where he started making a name of himself.

Life took him to Puerto Vallarta some ten years ago and he, like so many others, just fell in love with the place and with all the cultural buzz in Vallarta nowadays. He just doesn’t stop, going from one exhibition to another, in renowned galleries, hotels or restaurants where he shows his work with altruistic purposes.

Uno sabe que se ha topado con un verdadero artista, cuando descubre que su vida es un reflejo de su obra (y no al revés). Este es el caso de Guillermo Robles, un talentoso pintor de la Ciudad de México, cuya vida, llena de magia y misticismo, es una expresión viva de la temática de su obra, siempre girando alrededor de ángeles, madonas y otros seres celestiales. Su trabajo lo ha llevado a diversos ciudades norteamericanas, con gran éxito en Santa Fé, Nuevo México y en Montreal, Canadá. Pero sigue siendo el mismo tipo sencillo de cuando comenzó en el Jardín del Arte en la Ciudad de México donde dio sus primeros pasos en el mundo del arte.

La vida lo llevó a Puerto Vallarta hace ya casi diez años y, como tantos otros, simplemente se enamoró del lugar. Are you planning a big event? Do you have a conference, a summit, or maybe a wedding? Puerto Vallarta and the Banderas Bay area have developed a great infrastructure for all kinds of events. Sure, nature has helped a little bit and everybody prefers to go to an important congress if, after the long conferences they can have a margarita at the beach, but there are plenty of beaches out there and Vallarta somehow has become a magnet for important events.

All the big hotels have their own Convention Centers, there is also a new one built by the state government that has big expectations and will attract even more important meetings to Puerto Vallarta. Almost every service provider will speak English, so don’t worry too much if you have forgotten your Spanish lessons from high school. Anyway, there are a few important words to

know:

“I’ve got no money”

“one beer please”

“How much?”

“Good morning miss”

“Good night sir”

“right now”

“tomorrow”

“Thank you”

“Please”

“Sorry”

“Excuse me”

“No entiendo”

“No tengo dinero” (they will never believe you, but you can try)

“Una cerveza por favor” (“dos” for “two”, “tres” for “three”…)

“¿Cuánto cuesta?” (remember to ask before getting the service or product, especially when dealing with cab drivers)

“Buenos días señorita” (say this to every lady you meet and you will always get a nice smile back. Don’t worry about age or marital status)

“Buenas noches señor” (try exchanging “señor” and “señorita” according to sex for better results)

“Ahorita” although it will never mean that.

“Mañana” but it might mean in a week, in a month or sometimne in between (time in Mexico is a bit different).

“Gracias”

General Phrases

n Mexico it’s normal to shake hands with people, even if you saw them before in the same day. A kiss on the cheek is customary for girls. If you haven’t seen your partner for a week, or so, don’t be surprised if you get an “abrazo”.
