ENHANCED ROTATING EQUIPMENT RELIABILITY WITH DIAMOND MECHANICAL SEAL FACES

The integration of ADT’s UNCD into mechanical seals in large slurry pumps provided a remote desert operator with a cost-effective means for eliminating the use of the water and energy-intensive practice of gland “packing.”

DIAMOND PROPERTIES LEVERAGED IN THIS STUDY:

THE APPLICATION THE CHALLENGEWhen a remote desert mine was consuming upwards of 1,000,000 gallons of water per year, per pump - just to lubricate the packing gland in their slurry pumps - they needed a new, innovative solution to limit waste of this scarce and expensive resource. Due to the limited durability of traditional seals, the mine had previously been forced to use water-, energy- and maintenance-intensive gland “packing” to seal their pumps’ shafts.

The unique properties of ADT’s UNCD represented a novel solution, which enabled the integration of traditional seals into the large slurry pumps. When applied to traditional silicon carbide (SiC) seal rings, UNCD’s innate hardness and chemical resistance made the mechanical seal a cost-effective solution for reducing pump maintenance and water consumption (both due to packing lubrication and the resulting undesirable water introduction into the process).

On a daily basis, desert mining facilities are challenged by:

Extreme Conditions Water/Lubricant Scarcity

Dry Run Conditions High Pressures

Abrasion

ADT’s UNCD

+The extreme hardness and wear and chemical resistance provided by ADT’s diamond material enabled traditional seals to replace the pre-existing, water-intensive gland packing. In this case, the mine was able to reduce its water consumption by over 1,000,000 gallons per year, per pump, directly reducing an expense that can equate to up to 10% of a mine’s operating costs.

In addition to the vast amount of water involved with the packing method of sealing, it also results in routine pump maintenance, including packing gland adjustments and replacement of damaged shaft sleeves. The process also results in potential bearing replacement, due to damage caused by gland water spray. The implementation of ADT’s UNCD-enhanced seals significantly increased MTBR, reducing labor and material spend, as well as enhancing facility safety.
