Driving Instructors

ANDREW DENTON: Every day, MaureenKohlman, Jim Balshon and MaryKovacevic convert cowardice intoconfidence, nerves into knowledge, terror into technique. They are alldriving instructors. From Queanbeyanin New South Wales, a woman whoteaches people to drive semi-trailers -Mary Kovacevic. From Sydney, a manwho’s shown generations of kids in hisarea how to avoid pranging the familycar - Jim Balshon. And from just out ofDarwin, a woman who travels to remoteAboriginal communities to bring drivereducation to those who’d otherwisemiss out - Maureen Kohlman. Welcometo all of you.Jim, I’ll start with you - you came toAustralia 35 years ago from Palestine. What inspired you to be a drivinginstructor?JIM BALSHON: In about 1972, I did notspeak a word of English. I came in 1969and it was very tough to go to the motorregistry and apply for a licence. And Ithought, I’m going to teach my owncommunity how to be a driver in Sydneyso they won’t have to go through thesuffering that I did.ANDREW DENTON: That’s nice. Maureen, you live about 70 km out of Darwin. How long are you away fromhome . . . generally? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: When my boysused to travel with me we’d go out forthe whole school term. ANDREW DENTON: Ten weeks, so,sometimes it would be a 10-week tour ofduty? Simply teaching people how to

drive? Mary, you’re a former truckdriver, you teach people to drive the bigrigs. How scary is it?MARY KOVACEVIC: It’s scary to a degree, but I think that fear factor disappears. From the moment you meet thesepeople, you see they have this passionin them and it comes from the heart, that they really wanna learn. So, it’s notscary because I’ll say to them . . . Here’sthe steering wheel, you know how toget to neutral and leave the rest to me.And it’s amazing what you can do out ofthe passenger’s side . . . I’m quite agood driver out of the passenger’s seat.(Laughs) You need long legs sometimes. ANDREW DENTON: What, to reach theirpedals?MARY KOVACEVIC: That’s right, ‘causewe don’t have dual controls in heavyvehicles.ANDREW DENTON: That’s scary, and youdon’t have ‘L’ plates on?MARY KOVACEVIC: In New South Waleswe don’t, I teach in the ACT andQueensland also. So if I’m teaching inQueensland or the ACT, we wearL plates. I’d prefer to wear L plates, justto help the other drivers out there butusually you’ll find they work against youbecause people usually see an L plate, big truck, and they’ll do some . . . youknow, way-out things just to be in frontof this truck.ANDREW DENTON: Maureen, you canhelp me here - what is the secret toreverse parking? Because I find it a littleproblematic sometimes.MAUREEN KOHLMAN: I think it’s knowingyour car and, lining up the . . .

MARY KOVACEVIC: I always say, turn yourhazards on, so the person behind youdoesn’t come right up the back of you,so you can actually have that bit of spacethat you were intending to do a park in.ANDREW DENTON: But I always . . . see Iindicate very clearly, ‘cause when I’mreverse parking I go, “Arrrgggh!” Sopeople can hear that. MAUREEN KOHLMAN: That’s good. MARY KOVACEVIC: Well, to give you a tipwith your reverse parallel parking, . . .what size car do you drive, Andrew? ANDREW DENTON: Well, it depends . . .it’s smaller when I’ve finished.

LAUGHTER

ANDREW DENTON: Mary, how much ofyour job is teaching people to deal withidiots in the other vehicles? MARY KOVACEVIC: A lot. Yes, there’s a lotof that. What we call ‘Keep yourselfdefensive and proactive’. I’m notworried about myself, I’m more worriedabout my student. Because once thatstudent loses confidence, not with theirteacher, but with the traffic out there, itmakes it a lot harder for me to teachthem, so I keep them all jovial. ANDREW DENTON: By the way, out ofcuriosity, can you kangaroo hop a semi? MARY KOVACEVIC: Absolutely. ANDREW DENTON: That must be awesome.MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Doesn’t do muchfor the load. (Laughs)ANDREW DENTON: Maureen, what sortof road hazards do people that youteach face in the Top End? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Well buffalo . . .tourists mainly. ANDREW DENTON: Tourists? (Laughs)Why are they such a hazard? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Some of them tendto drive on the wrong side of the road.

ANDREW DENTON: Oh, okay.MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Yeah, and it’spretty hard to get them back onto theright side even after you’ve flashed yourlights and that. They have a lot of extrahazards – the fires in the dry season, the wet. In the wet, the water runs quitedeep over the roads. ANDREW DENTON: Mary, what do youthink is the hardest thing to teach? MARY KOVACEVIC: The gear box, because it’s coordination. We say a lotof tap dancing, their feet have gotta doquite a bit of movement. The right leg’s incharge of your brake, your acceleratorwhich we all sort of say, “Oh, yeah, weknow that.” But what we have to do iswe have to accelerate in between gearsgoing back. So, I think every car driver, even if it was for no money, to give themthe opportunity for half an hour to comein a truck to see what we have to do topull up, and I’d tell you they would neverpull up in front of you at the lights if theysee that empty lane ‘cause it takes a bitand there’s skill involved. ANDREW DENTON: Maureen, can I comeinto your universe for a while? Youteach Aboriginal people, don’t you? Youteach more than one person at a time, don't you? Why is that? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Economics, basically. The fee that we get paid bythe government is minimal. ANDREW DENTON: So, how many are ina car at one time? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: We have four inthe car – three in the back seat and onein the front. And English is not their mainlanguage.ANDREW DENTON: So, how do you getover the language barrier? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: I simply ask themto use their own language or they teachme their words for going left or goingright. And I use hand signals as well, youknow, add that to the Aboriginal word.

ANDREW DENTON: Are Aboriginal peoplegood learners? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Fantastic, they'relike sponges. Yeah. Can't keep up withthem, they just want to learn so much andthey're so enthusiastic that if you lookedat being a teacher and you had a choiceof students, give me the Aboriginalpeople from the Top End any day. ANDREW DENTON: Is that right? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Yeah, you justcan't keep up with the amount ofinformation that they wanna learn. Butit's a two-way street. You don't go outthere to teach at them, you go to learnwith them.ANDREW DENTON: You mentioned you goout there to teach, but you mentionedyou learn. MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Oh yes.ANDREW DENTON: What sort of thingshave you learnt from being in theseremote communities? MAUREEN KOHLMAN: Respect for theirculture for a start. They live their culture. And I have learnt that the Aboriginalculture is so intricate that unless you'reactually born into the culture there's nohope of understanding the whole lot of it.And it's different with every community.Everything's a new learning curve. And,as they get to like you, they generatethe work for you. ANDREW DENTON: I think you've beenvery privileged to be out there, it soundsgreat.

Jim, what about for you? Is there a joyin the job, a pride in the job of taking agibbering idiot and turning them into acompetent driver? JIM BALSHON: Definitely, because at theend of the day, if you don't love your joband the satisfaction that you get whenyou see the last time . . . When theexaminer says . . . "Congratulations, you've passed this test." You see thesmile and the joy that they have on theirfaces. Then you really know that you'vedone something to help other people. It is a very, very joyful job. ANDREW DENTON: Last question, and it'sthe controversial one. Who makesbetter drivers – men or women? I've . . .MAUREEN KOHLMAN: The ones with abetter attitude. So, if they've got theright attitude – whether they're male orfemale, it's attitude that counts. And it'sthe knowledge that the person with theattitude realises they're in charge of alethal weapon. And, I think too, with theattitude . . . They're learning it from theirparents. So, when you're driving alongthe road, and teaching your children toreverse park remember they're learning. ANDREW DENTON: I think we shouldleave it there. You know I've noticed onething in common with the three of youwhich is really lovely, you love your joband you're passionate about what youdo. Thank you all very much, Maureen,Jim and Mary.

Stanza 1 My dad’s a man of plugs and bungs and labels. He could get philosophy from a rubbish binand says we need a towel protocol for the bathroom. He’ll put masking tape and texta on a clear jar of teabags, just so we know what they are. He’ll draw a diagram of lasagne layers, because the written recipe’s good as gobbledegook. He was quick to send approval to the wonders behind the new non-stick, non-drip honey dispenser(not the makers of the spoon)and delighted to discover the design had spread to golden syrup. He demands that pre-dinner dishes be done, thus preventing immense pile-ups,and he knows it is time for a lesson on the oil heaterwhen someone lets the glass burn black.Nothing drives him madder than the Subaruand how it’s all skew-whiff,you know, one millimetre lowerone side than the other.

Stanza 2 He doesn’t worry about terrorists, but fears the predatory porn that pops up on the internetamongst floods of computer table flotsam.*

Stanza 3 In our house everypaper has a folder everyfolder a label; everyplug a place everybung a box andthe kettle runs on low twenty-four hours a day soInternational Roast is only a minute away becausemaximum efficiency multiplied by minimum flotsamequals mental clarity!

Stanza 4 My dad’s a man of plugs and bungs and labels.My dad’s a man of philosophy and industrial design.My dad’s a poetic eccentric,and he’s mine (it’s genetic)all mine.

January 1952: two friends leave Buenos Aires for a journey across South America which

will take them 8,000 kilometres in four months. Starting out as a fun

adventure to see their continent with the help of only an unreliable

motorcycle, they soon discover that this undertaking will forever alter

their view of the world.

The elder of the two, 29-year-old biochemist Alberto Granado would go

on to become a leader in medicine, while the younger of the two, Ernesto

Guevara, would later become a South American figurehead for revolution.

Based on the journals of both Alberto Granado and the man who would

later become ‘El Che’, The Motorcycle Diaries follows a journey of

self-discovery, tracing the origins of a revolutionary heart.

irector Walter Salles: “When you finish reading the book, youDDhave the impression you can actually change things in the world, by understanding them and taking part. The beauty of the journey lies in the fact that their perception of the world changed; they didn’t refuse to see. In turn, they go on to try to change the world, according to what they had come to understand on the journey ... If there’s one thing I can tell you about this experience we’ve had – it’s that we were also very different when we got to the end of our journey in comparison to where we were when we started it.”

L oved by audiences and critics the world over, The Motorcycle Diaries will be released in

Australia by Dendy Films on December 16th 2004.
