General Foundation Program aims to:
The essential teaching aims in the GFP, which are in tandem with the learning outcomes and student output, have been stipulated by the OAAA in the
“Oman Academic Standards for General Foundation Programs” (2009). The General Foundation Program at UTAS aims to enable students to attain
the required skills for their higher education studies. Specifically, the program aims to:
1. Extend the English language skills of students to enable them to communicate confidently and effectively in social, academic, and work-related
contexts.
2. Ensure that students are equipped with the mathematical understanding and skills to meet the cognitive and practical competencies necessary in
various disciplines.
3. Ensure that students are equipped with the computing and IT understanding and skills necessary to source, process, and communicate information
related to various disciplines.
4. Enhance students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills to succeed in their academic programs.
5. Develop students’ fundamental study and academic skills such as managing time and accepting responsibility, research skills, taking notes, and

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Listen to simple texts about personal, social, academic, and work-related activities.

3. Use sentences related to personal, social, academic, and work-related settings both in writing and speaking.
4. Write simple texts at paragraph levels using appropriate grammar and vocabulary.
5. Communicate and exchange information about him/herself and others in different situations.
6. Demonstrate basic study skills such as time management, research, taking notes, and giving presentations.
7. Demonstrate a level-appropriate accuracy and range of grammatical structures.
8. Access and use virtual platforms for independent language learning.

All the exams will be timed as per the specifications given in the table above.
On completion of the allotted time for all skills, the answer booklet/sheets has to be collected back from the students.
Homework must be submitted on time. Teachers should write their feedback on the students’ writing assignments. Late submission of any
assessed tasks will be penalized.
Participation: Active participation in class is required.
Teacher’s marks are awarded based on students’ participation, on time work submission and discipline.
If a student fails the CA, but passes aggregate (LEE & CA), the student is considered as ‘passed’.
There are two conditions for passing a level: passing LEE and Passing the aggregate.

Essential information to students on policies
Online Related Guidelines
Course Assessment: All online exams are to be conducted with students' cameras on. If a student is unable to appear on camera, he/she will not be permitted to conduct the exam. GFP Guidelines for Online Classes:
Attend virtual classes according to their schedule/timetable.
Sit in a quiet place away from family members, TV, or friends to avoid distractions.
Adhere to the dress code. Students not wearing appropriate attire should be requested to leave the online class and be marked
absent.
Join the class at least 5 minutes before the class starts in order to start the lesson on time. (Latecomers will be marked absent
according to the attendance policy.)
Attend all classes. (Cameras should be switched on and students should raise hands for teachers to verify class attendance.
Warnings for absenteeism will be issued according to the attendance policy.)
Keep the microphone muted unless the teacher asks otherwise.
Raise their hand to speak by clicking on the hand icon in MS Teams.
Turn on the microphone to speak and turn it off when finished.
Turn the camera on or off as instructed by the teacher.
Use the chat feature to make relevant comments or ask questions. The use of emoji is not encouraged.
Behave according to classroom instructions. Inappropriate behaviour may be reported.
Watch the recorded lesson available on OneDrive if absent.
Turn cameras on during assessments. Students without cameras cannot partake in the exam.
Speak only in English.
Adhere to college regulations. Students who record the lesson with their mobile phones or other tools and share the recording
on social media will face severe consequences.

Attendance Rules
1. Attendance is mandatory upon GFP students for all the curricular components which they have registered.
2. Students are responsible for keeping informed about their own absenteeism percentage.
3. Attendance shall be taken at the beginning of each lecture.
4. Students shall be punctual. Arriving late to class or other scheduled learning activities shall be counted as being absent. Exceptions
may be made depending on the nature of the reason for the late arrival.
5. Students shall be marked "Late" if they come to class or any other scheduled learning moment, or join an online meeting between five
and ten minutes late.
6. Students shall be marked "Absent" and not allowed in if they come to class or any other scheduled learning moment, or join an online
meeting ten minutes late or later.
7. The tolerated percentage of absenteeism from GFP mandatory, scheduled learning activities is 15%. Warning notices shall be as
follows:
• First Warning: 5% absenteeism or higher
• Second Warning: 10% absenteeism or higher
• Debarred from Final Exam: surpassing15% absenteeism
8. Students are required to submit valid excuses within 3 working days of the date of their absence.
9. Each warning notice is issued after excluding the hours of absence with valid excuses. Valid excuses shall not entail deleting the
absence record of a student.
10. If a student surpasses 15% absenteeism in any component, he/she shatfbe debarred from the Final Exam and shall be awarded a FW
grade. FW means "failing "r unexcused absence".
1 1. If a student surpasses absenteeism but NOT EXCEEDING 20 0/0 with valid accepted excuses, he/she will be allowed to continue their
study.
12. If a student's absenteeism with valid accepted excuses EXCEEDS 20%, he/she shall be considered withdrawn (W) from that component or

advised to postpone the semester.
Valid Excuses
The following shall be considered valid excuses for absenteeism:
A. Illness or any other health condition provided that the student submits a sick leave certificate issued by a government hospital
or polyclinic. Sick leave certificates issued by private hospitals or clinics shall not be accepted unless they have been subsequently
certified by the government health centres. A certificate stating that the student has merely been seen by a health practitioner shall not be
accepted as a valid excuse for absenteeism.
B. Students who have medical appointments shall inform their teachers about them in advance and submit valid proof (as
described in A) of having been to the appointment.
C. Students are also excused for having been absent from one or more contact hours in the case of the death of a first degree
relative provided that an official document from the authorities is submitted to the course teacher within 3 days.
D. In the cases of absence due to extra-curricular activities, the prior approval of the college management shall be required.

Examination Rules
The Assessment scheme of the GFP courses (English Language, Mathematics & Computing Skills) is composed of Continuous
Assessment (CA) and Final Exam (FE) and both carry an equal weightage of 50%. CA includes the Midterm Exam and other
assessment components. The CA includes Quizzes, Book Review Report, Presentation, Self-Study Mark, Portfolio, Teacher Mark and
Project Report and Presentation.
A. Exams regulations 1, Final exams shall be held in the fifteenth and sixteenth weeks of the semester for the Foundation Program courses in English,
Mathematics and Computing Skills. The date and place of the test shall be announced by teachers, as well as through UTAS
website, and by emails.
2. The final examination assesses the entire course and is held once at the end of each semester. It is set according to the constituents
specified by the Quality assurance committee. The final examination may be written, or oral, or both according to the nature of the course
and the assessment system.
3.Students shall bring to all exams their university student cards; whoever does not comply with this rule shall not be allowed to take the

exam.
4.Students may enter the exam room up to 30 minutes from the start of the examination. This rule shall apply to listening exams only when
this margin of tolerated tardiness does not compromise the nature of the exam or harms the concentration of the other students.
5.Students may hand in their exam papers only after the first half of the time assigned to the exam has passed.
6.Students shall submit their exam papers only once. After doing so, they have no right to look at their answers or change them.
7.Students who miss a Placement Test (PT) shall submit a document supporting the reason for their absence to the concerned authorities
within the three following workdays after the exam. If their excuse is approved, another date for PT shall be arranged.
8.Students who miss a midterm exam or any continuous assessment tasks shall submit a document justifying their absence to the concerned

9. Students who miss the final exam shall be awarded an "l" grade (Incomplete). If the students wish to apply for a make-up exam, they shall
submit a document justifying their absence to the concerned authorities within one week after the exam. If their request is granted by the
college dean/college council, a make-up exam shall be arranged.

Note: UTAS GFP marks are not rounded to the whole number before the end of the semester. However, students' Continuous
Assessment tasks and Examinations will be rounded to the first decimal point. At the end of the semester final marks will be rounded to

the nearest whole point.
C. Appeals
1 . A student is entitled to submit a written request for reappraisal of his/her final grade in any of the GFP courses during the result
appeal period.
2. Reappraisal must be conducted following the process entitled for appeal requests where a certain committee will review the
papers within one week from the date of submitting the appeal to verify the accuracy of all marks, or to mark any unmarked
questions.
3. A decision on the request shall be made no later than the end of week two from the start of the following semester. If no
decision is made during the mentioned period, it shall be considered a rejection for the request.
4. The result of the reappraisal must reach the Admission and Registration Centre/Admission Centre no later than a week after the
date of the end of the reappraisal process.
Discipline and Order
1. All GFP teaching, admin and technical support staff as well as students have to observe the dress code.
2. Once registered, a student must follow university rules and regulations of academic conduct and integrity, observe ethical
conduct, and avoid all forms or degrees of infraction whether during lectures, in examination halls or elsewhere; whether
individually involved, or in association with others.
3. Cheating or attempting to cheat in Examinations or plagiarizing work submitted for assessment is not tolerated in UTAS.
Students caught cheating, attempting to cheat or plagiarizing will face punitive measures which can include failing the course.
4. The health and safety procedures and protocols must be adhered to, especially during this pandemic period of Covid-19.
5. The physical and intellectual properties of the university and rights of others including staff members and students must be

safeguarded and respected.
6. Any misconduct or breach of the GFP and UTAS rules and regulations or traditions will be deemed a punishable offence and
certain disciplinary measures will be inflicted on violators.
