Pastor’s Message Sanctuary

“Sanctuary” brings to mind a place of relaxation, safety, and rest. The Sanctuary Movement protects refugees—people fleeing violence and oppression. The book of Job, Psalms and other scripture writings refer to God’s creation of Earth as a sanctuary for all creatures. “Sanctuary” also names the space in religious buildings, in which people may worship and bring their entire selves before the loving God. Jesus Christ is sanctuary, as he said that his “yoke is easy and burden light [Matt. 11:30].”

Ascension has created outdoor sanctuary spaces. These include the meditation trail, labyrinth, and the rain garden. Last night Ascension parishioners worked in the rain garden; weeding, making a deeper trench for the water to flow; and enjoying the native plants, shrubs and trees that parishioners planted several years ago. The photos are of the workers, a precious morel mushroom, and the rain garden with walking paths.

May we be sanctuary for one another, create sanctuary spaces for our community, and support policies and actions that protect the vulnerable people and all of God’s creatures, who deserve to live on Earth as sanctuary.

Blessings,

Pr. Nancy

PS Enjoy sanctuary this Saturday as we explore the LaPlatte River from canoes, 10 am to noon (see notice on next page).

HARK! Important News and Upcoming Events

Family Canoe Trip on June 2, 10:00 - 12:00: THIS SATURDAY

The Great Ascension Canoe Trip registration ends on Thursday for the Saturday event. We’ll go rain or shine (thunder storms excepted), meeting at 9:45, at the Shelburne boat launch off Bay Road in Shelburne. If weather threatens on Saturday morning, please check your email for a message.

Men’s Breakfast Summer Break

Attention Men of Ascension! We will NOT be meeting in the month of June or July. Enjoy your summer! We shall reconvene in August!

Educational Ministry Director

This past Sunday, Jessica Summer, Ascension’s Educational Ministry director, began her ministry at Ascension. We had a wonderful Education Committee meeting to plan for summer Sunday school, with her. Jessica is very experienced and a life-long Lutheran. Her resume is attached HERE (for privacy on the web, her home address, etc… were removed, however her contact information is available in the directory!). We will be able to enhance our ministry of education and fellowship through her work. This summer, Jessica and I will visit all Ascension families with children in Sunday school, both to get to know them better and to ask how Ascension can best serve them through education,

Sunday School News

Children’s Classes

This Sunday Memorial Day Weekend we DO NOT HAVE SUNDAY SCHOOL. but......

SUNDAY, JUNE 3 IS CHILDREN'S DAY!!!!!! And we have Big plans.

On June 3, we will celebrate the Children, and it is also our last day of Sunday School, during the School Year. In Sunday School we will play our year-end game review of what we've learned to earn our extra snacks. We'll choose "church jobs" like greeters, ushers, etc. The Confirmation class has planned church, selected the songs we'll sing, and there will not be a sermon. We expect children to attend if possible, as they will all have "jobs" to do. All children will receive certificates. Third graders will receive Bibles. The Sunday School has been learning a song they will sing. We'll thank the teachers and helpers who've been so vital throughout the year, in assuring the children's Christian Education. We will say good bye to a special friend who is moving away. We will welcome and have an opportunity to meet with Jessica Summer, our amazing new director of Educational Ministry. And each child will receive a fun invitation, from Jessica, to our "Ice Cream Sundays" themed Summer KidzKamp during church at 10 AM (named after the season, not the director).

So PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND WITH YOUR CHILDREN ON SUNDAY JUNE 3RD, AND BE AMAZED AT THESE FABULOUS KIDDOS, AND THE FUTURE LEADERS OF ASCENSION AND OUR COMMUNITIES.. (Ascension: Where the girls are strong, the boys are good looking and all of the kids are above average... paraphrased a bit from Garrison Keillor.)

KidzKamp begins on Sunday, June 17! (No Sunday school on June 10.) Look for more information to come!

The Adult Sunday School

The Adult Discussion group is planning on taking up The Road is made by Walking by Brian MacClaren. This is a provocative book about being a Christian in modern times. You don't have to read it beforehand, just come! We need you! The class meets in Pastor Nancy’s office each Sunday at 9 am.

Lost and Found

In the Fellowship Room there is a table with a variety of items that have been left at Ascension—several hats, a leather glove, a small Bible, numerous kitchen items, etc. Please claim any of the articles that belong to you. If items are not claimed after several weeks, they will be donated. Thank you!

STEPHEN F. WISLOSKI SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

A $1000 scholarship will be given this spring, in memory of Steve Wisloski, to a deserving student who has demonstrated:

High academic achievement

True financial need

Clearly stated educational goals

The applicant must be accepted at an accredited college, university or technical school. Students may apply with a letter of request, stating need, achievement, and goals, with supporting informational material and documentation as needed. Please submit your letter to Lydia Wisloski, 40 Wildwood Drive, Essex Junction, VT 05452, or bring it to the church, attention Lydia Wisloski.

Speaker in the Fellowship Hall

Don’t forget that if you are in the fellowship hall or kitchen during the worship service, you can hear the service! A simple knob is below the speaker above the table in the “classroom” (the area in the fellowship hall that can be divided by the accordion door). Please ask an usher to turn the speaker on, if it is off. (BTW, folks in the sanctuary can’t hear you…so don’t worry!).

Additional News and Opportunities

Brain Freezer 5K

People Helping People Global is hosting the 8th Annual Brain Freezer 5K in Downtown Burlington on July 14th. In case you haven’t heard of it, the idea is that runners have to run 1.5 miles, stop to eat a pint of ice cream, then finish the final 1.5 with bellies full of delicious ice cream!

The Smoky Newfield Project, featuring our own Bill Valliere and Cathy Cameron-Muscente, will be preforming and singing the National Anthem race day!

Do you love Ice Cream and/or want to sign up? Follow this link to join the fun; https://phpg.webconnex.com/bf5k2018

We expect over 300 racers again this year, which mean we are great need of volunteers. If this sounds like a race you'd like to be a part of, here's a list of some of the activities that you can expect to do on race day:

Handing out ice cream at the half-way point

Taking photos and cheering on racers

Keeping the runners safe by directing traffic at road crossings

Timing and helping at the finish line

Setting up and breaking down tents, tables, etc.

Handing out packets/t-shirts and registering race day runners

Most volunteers should plan on being there on race day at 8:30am (some activities require you get there a bit earlier).

If you are interested, please use this link to sign up to volunteer: http://brainfreezer5k.com/home/volunteer/. If you have any questions, please email Isabel Tuck ([email protected]) or call 802-318-4488.
