BCPVPA members elect President-elect and four Directors

More than 700 BCPVPA members cast their votes this week and re-elected Susan Clough (Surrey), Darren Danyluk (Rocky Mountain) and David DeRosa (Kootenay-Columbia) to the BCPVPA Board of Directors. Elected for the first time was Steve DallaLana (Prince George). All four Directors begin their two year terms on July 1.

These members of the Board will serve with President Gordon Li (Burnaby), President-elect Kevin Reimer (Comox Valley), Heidi Grant (Cowichan Valley) and Brett Johnson (Greater Victoria), Lee Karpenko (Prince George), Carol-Ann Leidloff (Kootenay Lake), and Brian Leonard (Coquitlam) who each have one year remaining on their terms.

Leadership opportunities GULF ISLANDS invites applications for the position of Principal, Saturna Elementary School/Saturna Ecological Education Center, effective August 1. “The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation of the school and for the delivery of high quality programs to learners of all ages, including preschool, primary, middle years, high school and adults. This is a position that requires a great range of flexibility, creativity, patience, and a passion for environmental, place-based and differentiated education.” The posting will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected. Networking The BCPVPA listserve is an email-based network of almost 500 members. Short Coursebegins in two weeks The BCPVPA/UBC Short Course will take place

on the UBC campus, July 6 – 10. This intensive, one-week (44-hour) program is designed to provide new school leaders with an opportunity to hone the skills necessary for success in their roles. Through a blend of research and practical application participants are immersed in the realities of school administration and given the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed in their new roles. The program is based on the Leadership Standards for Principals & Vice-Principals in British Columbia. Each

day of the program focuses on one of the four Domains of the Standards (Moral Stewardship, Relational Leadership, Instructional Leadership, and Organizational Leadership). The concluding session revolves around BC education partners. Register at http://bit.ly/1DUTgaQ

Secondary school essay contest on the Magna CartaDeadline December 31

The Law Society of BC invites public school secondary students in BC who are currently enrolled in, or

have taken, Law 12 and/or Civics Studies 11 courses in the 2014/15 or 2015/16 academic years, to par-

ticipate in a contest to honour the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. The essay topic is Magna Carta

and its relevance to Canada in the 21st Century. Students are asked to submit an essay that demonstrates

an understanding of the significance of the Magna Carta to the rule of law, human rights, and democratic

principles. The first prize winner will receive an award of $1000 and will be invited to a special awards

presentation event in Vancouver; the runner up will receive $500.

Limited space is available in seven cohorts (Vernon, Vancouver, Duncan, Prince George, Surrey, Coquitlam, and Burnaby) for the BCPVPA’s

Supervision for Learning program, which supports instructional leadership and is designed to increase the impact of school administrators on teaching practices and student achievement. The program offers five days of learning over eight months. Participants are involved in ongoing shared-practice and dialogue with colleagues and BCPVPA instructors. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the BCPVPA elections, held over the past

three weeks. This was the most hotly contested election in the history of the BCPVPA, with five candidates putting their names forward for President-elect and nine candidates running for the four available positions as Director. I applaud their willingness to put their names forward and to share their vision for the

Association. I want to thank, too, all the members of the Association who voted over the three ballots for President-elect and the single ballot for the Directors. The Board’s first meeting for the 2015-2016 school year takes place in Vancouver in mid-August.

This is the last eNews of this school year. I hope your summer travels are safe … and that you have time to fully enjoy your well-deserved vacation with family and friends.
