INTRODUCTION

Energy efficient motors are the ones in which ,design improvement are incorporated specifically to increase operating efficiency over standard motors.

Energy efficient motors operate with efficiencies that are typically 4 to 6 % higher than standard motors.

Energy Efficiency Purpose

• The purpose of energy efficient motor is to be able to supply the same level of energy service only using less energy.• Efficient energy use is achieved primarily by

means of a more efficient technology or process rather than by change in individual behavior.• Energy conservation reduces the energy

consumption

Page 4: Energy efficent motor

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STANDARD MOTORS AND ENERGY EFFICENT MOTORS

More copper in the winding. Reduced in losses. Energy efficient motors operate with efficiencies

that are typically 2-6% higher than the standard motors

PROSPECTS OF ENERGY EFFIC. MOTOR• When there is new installation or

modification in your plant.• Old motors are damaged and need

rewinding.• Existing motors are underloaded or

overloaded.• Protecting other devices.

Motor efficiency details

Classification:dividing motors into efficiency classes:• Standard EFF 3• Improved EFF2• Energy efficient EFF1

Eff1 motors are expensive to buy,be deployed for 24/7 workingEff2 motors can be installed in all cases.

Constructional features: By increasing the amount of copper in the motor which

reduces the resistance loss in the winding & temp. rise. By this the performance of motor increased.

Use of more and thinner laminations of high quality motor steel reduces core losses in stator and rotor.

More complex rotor bar design enable good starting torque with efficient full speed operation.

Improved overall design reduces windage loss and stray.

Page 11: Energy efficent motor

Losses occur in standard motor:

• Copper loss• Core loss • Friction and windage loss • Stray load loss

Page 12: Energy efficent motor

Contd.Copper loss:Depend on the effective resistance of motor winding

Iron loss:Depending on the magnetic structure of core and results from a combination of hysteresis and eddy current effect due to change in magnetic field in the motor core.

Friction and windage loss:Occurs due to the friction in the bearing of the motor.

Page 13: Energy efficent motor

Cost of energy efficient motors:Usually it is of normal cost and slightly more than the normal motors.it is about 15 % to 30 % more than the standard motors.

In future, the initial cost may be available at the same cost as a standard motor when the population of energy efficient motors increases.

Page 14: Energy efficent motor

Advantages:

• The EEM has a greater efficiency than a standard motor therefore they have less operating costs.• EEM has a lower slip so they have a higher

speed than a standard motor• EEM can reduce maintenance cost• Improve electric power saving.• Operate more satisfactorily under abnormal

voltage.

Page 15: Energy efficent motor

Disadvantages:

• Portability• Initial cost is more• Speed control• Proper maintenance

Page 16: Energy efficent motor

Application:

• Energy efficient motors are specially suited for industries which are power intensive and equipments.

• For example: fans ,blowers, pumps ,compressor etc.

• Some the driven equipments and industries such as textile, paper, cement, power generation

Page 17: Energy efficent motor

Conclusion:Finally I conclude that most of the industrial loads having motors are consuming 70% of the total electricity.so it is better to replace standard motors with energy efficient motors where ever economical so that we can
