Nakamura Hikaru ½-½ Svid le r Pe te r

    Anand Viswanathan ½-½ Caruana Fabiano

To pa lo v Vese lin 0-1 Aro nian Le vo n

Anish Giri – Sergey Karjakin 0.5-0.5

Sergey played the (Queen’s Indian) structure so w ell yesterday w ith white against Nakamura that I though the w on’t repeat the s ame with the black pieces today.” That is wha t Anish Giri said in the press conferenceafter his game aga inst Sergey Karjakin. But the Russian grandmaster ha s no such prejudices. He learnt fromhis oppon ent’s (Nakamura’s) mistakes an d applied it in his own game toda y. Not going for c7-c5 and keep ingthe pa wn o n c6 wa s one such improvement. It seemed as if Black was comfortable, but sudde nly Karjakinpushed his pawn to h5. As Alexandra Kosteniuk pointed out, “Yesterday the move h2-h4 proved highlysuccessful against Nakamura, and maybe Sergey wa nted to try something similar aga in!” However, the move18…h5 w as a ba d one a nd Anish took advantage of it with the move 19.Bh3. The Dutch GM could have verywe ll got a hug e advanta ge w ith the move 20.f3 instead of 20.Nf4, which he played in the game. After the

inaccuracy the game w as still interesting, but the da nger had passe d for Sergey. He sacrificed a paw n forcompensation. Giri retaliated w ith a piece sacrifice. But that wa s clearly not eno ugh an d he ha d to repe at themoves and split the point.

Viswanathan Anand – Fabiano Caruana 0.5-0.5

    After the moves 1.e4 e5 2 .Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 ask w hat the black pawn o n a7 feels. No one cares a bout it anymore!

Caruana too played 3… Nf6 and Anand to ok the ga me into the Anti-Berlin territory with 4.d3. Fabiano musthave de finitely studied the game Anand against Topalov from round one . Hence, Anand de viated on moveseven w ith 7.h3 instead o f 7.Nbd2. That put Fabiano into some thoug ht. He came up w ith this interesting planof ...exd4 follow ed by ...c5! In the ensu ing middlegame Black was sad dled with a small we akness o n d6 tha twas compensated by active pieces. Anand held an advantage and with Caruana approaching time pressure, things looked g ood for Vishy. But the American kept his calm and combined w ith some indecisivenes s fromVishy the game was abruptly drawn due to many exchanges.

Veselin Topalov – Levon Aronian 0-1

It was one of those games that Topalov would want to forget. First he was outprepared as Aronian essayed anew idea in the En glish Four Knights from the black side. Veselin wa s ambitious and didn’t wa nt to se ttle foran equ al position. He tried to be ad venturous and it ende d up badly. After just thirteen moves he wa sworse. A blunder on the seventeenth move cost the Bulgarian another pawn. And although Aronian was farfrom his best in converting the plus position, the situation wa s so much in his favour that the se smallinaccuracies didn’t matter. A relatively easy win for Levon w ho no w joins the leaders Anand and Karjakin.

Hikaru Nakamura – Peter Svidler 0.5-0.5

Peter Svidler wa s on fire today. He had prepared h is opening in such great depth tha t it was simply mindblowing! Nakamura started w ith 1.d4, maybe expecting that Peter wo uld reply with the Grunfeld. However,Svidler stuck to the same line he played aga inst Karjakin in the first round. W hile Karjakin had o pted for therelatively safe 9 .Nxd4, Nakamura chose the much more critical 9.cxd4 line. Until move 20 it se emed tha t boththe players w ere relatively well prepared. But Peter went a step ahead and show ed that he had seen theposition in much great depth. Whe n he made his 25th move he a lready had one hour forty five minutes – fiveminutes more tha n wh at he h ad at the start o f the game! Nakamura w as in great difficulties. With immenseresourcefulness he steered the game towa rds a rook + knight endgame in which he was a paw n dow n.

Whe ther that endg ame is winning or not requires the microscopic eye of our endgame expert Karsten Mueller. But suffice it to say that Svidler ran out o f energy towa rds the end a nd Hikaru was ab le to hold the game. Agreat ba ttle indeed a nd at some levels both players could claim a moral victory out of it.

    Topalov - Aronian hea dline should be 0 - 1, not 1 - 0.

Giri-Karjakin: When two prodigies with a solid style meet, even the mistakes cancel out. Amissed opportunity for Anish and a go od e xample o f Sergey's resilience.Anand-Caruana: Anand held an edge as White but Caruana reacted well and with h5-h4 gaveup a pawn for adequate counterplay. Fabi has shown twice he can defend inferior positions

but needs to win a game.Topalov-Aronian: Veselin's poor form continues with reckless play in the mddlegame. Aronian

took full advantage an d scored his first win.Nakamura-Svidler: Game of the round. Who wou ld have predicted the likeable cricketeer wou ld abando n hisfavorite Gruenfeld for the e6 Slav? As long as his opp onents a void the sharp gambit variations w ith e4, Peteris up to the task of defending the resulting IQP positions. Today he o utplayed Hikaru and must have misseda w in somewhere.

Overall: After two de feats, Topalov's campaign must be effectively over and he will be targeted by theothers. Nakamura has calculated badly in every game and unless his form improves will be out of therunning. The othe rs are too tightly bunched tog ether and all are playing w ell. The next few rounds w ill becrucial in determining the leader.

IMO after three rounds no one ha s stood out from the rest. I expected more from Fabi but heplayed twice with black pieces so he has so me excuse. Anish as usual, rock solid but no thingmore. Sergey's form seems to be very decent although h is victory came after hugemiscalculation by Hikaru. Anand is enigma for me and if he manage s to w in Candidates again Iwill be very surprised but a lso full of admiration for him. Levon as in Lo ndon plays better w ithblack pieces. Peter w as great a gainst Naka but he run o ut of fuel in latter parts of the game.

Hikaru has be en disappo inting so far and he w as lucky not to be d efeated tw ice in a row . And in the end

wha t to say abo ut Veselin? His dismal form continues an d I am afraid he is destined to be dea d last as he

was in London. Still I guess best chances for overall win has Caruana but he has to prove his status asfavorite. There are more than enoug h time for each player to raise his form in remaining 11 rounds. It w ill bevery tight until the very last roun d. If I have to p ick someone for a victory I will go w ith Karjakin, he is grea tdefender a nd can play w ell in long tournaments which he proved in World Cup last yea r. At same time I thinkCarlsen w ould not w ant that to happe n since Karjakin's style of play does no t suit Carlsen. Similar can besaid for Giri but he has to sta rt winning, if he draws h ere in 10 out of 14 ga mes for instance, chances of overall victory are negligible. But if he goe s unde feated w ho know s, maybe +4 -0 =10 is enough :-).

Those w ho love the game of chess s hould boycott Agon/FIDE's web broa dcast of thetournament.http://www .theguardian.com/sport/2016/mar/13/world-chess-champion-magnus-carlsen-candidates-tournament-moscow-agon

@Bojan KG, Topalov did sta nd out ... as prey/target how ever!

I simply love Peter Svidler, I back him all the way, Even Vishy can lose for him. Rather thanhating Giri, people sh ould start loving Pete r's attitude.

    Anand will come back ....

Haven't been able to watch a single game due to the Moscow time zone. What a shame.

Howe ver, I am excited for Anand. He is do ing quite well and, to be frank, I wo uld not besurprised if he wins the tournament ag ain. And if he does, I have no idea w hat could he dodifferently to bea t Carlsen... it wo uld not make it any less exciting though if it comes to th at.Anand's incredible determination is something to admire and be hold for sure!

I'm not surprised tha t certain chess players defend Agon . Don't bite the h and tha t feeds you...

This whole copyright thing has been a huge disaster and to make matters worse Agon seemsto have no clue whatsoever on how to cover a chess tournament.

I had a que stion about C aruana - the scorebo ard above s uggests h e is playing for Italy. ?. Ithought Ca ruana and Wes ley So had switched to the US federation....

Thanks a lot for the consistently excellent coverage!

Looks like Topalov is going to be the whipping bo y for this tournament. Clearly not playing well.

I really feel sorry for anan d, time and again he answ ers dumb questions w ith a smile on hisface.
