Harmful Pathogen Threats? UV Disinfection is the Solution! The Threat
Sustainable seafood that includes, Salmon, Halibut, Sea Bream, Cobia, Rainbow Trout, and Oysters are
all valuable commodities threatened by harmful pathogen infestation. But they’re not the only ones.
Public exhibits of fish, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, and birds—all living examples of our natural
world—are also in constant danger of coming in contact with harmful pathogens.
It’s no secret that our world is faced with declining water quality and availability. This, combined with
increased disease outbreaks, has resulted in continued pollution and the introduction of new waterborne
pathogens to natural waters. There is a solution. The chart on the next page lists the most common
pathogens found in Aquaculture and identifies their required Fluence (UV dose) for inactivation.
Harmful Waterborne Pathogens
Aquaculture has used UV disinfection to control harmful waterborne pathogens for many years, but few design-consultants, purchasers, and operators truly
understand UV’s capabilities well enough to use it successfully and cost-effectively. To achieve successful UV disinfection one must apply it correctly! The first step
in applying UV disinfection correctly is to familiarize yourself with the targeted pathogens. This helps to establish the application’s UV disinfection requirements.
Keep in mind, no two pathogens are exactly alike and all require their own specific UV-C dose.
The diagram above demonstrates the complex life cycle of the warm water protozoa Cryptocaryon (marine white spot). The diagram illustrates the four life-cycle
stages of this lethal protozoan. It reveals the microorganism’s physical size and actual life-span based of its life-cycle stage. The free-swimming Tomite excyst or
infective stage, when the microorganism is smallest (25-60 μm), is the life-cycle stage where UV Disinfection is most effective.

UV Information
UV doses not accompanied by a specific log value, should be considered a minimal dosage. The listed data was collected from various
sources and Emperor Aquatics, Inc. does not accept any responsibilit y for the accuracy of this information. This information is meant to
be a guideline and should be used as such.
Harmful Pathogens Associated With Aquaculture
www.emperoraquatics.com │ 7
UV is a natural component of the electro-magnetic radiation emitted by the
sun. The majority of radiation produced during this process is absorbed
by ozone in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. UV light, specifically UV-C light
(240-280 nm), which does pass through the atmosphere, acts as a natural
disinfectant by inactivating exposed microorganisms, such as those found
in surface matter.
Emperor Aquatics, Inc.’s Low-Pressure (Monochromatic) UV Lamps utilize
the same principle as the sun. Much of their output energy (35-40%) is
within the Germicidal Action Spectrum (240-280 nm), specifically 254 nm.
Coincidentally, living microorganisms absorb UV-C light, which, within
seconds, triggers a photochemical reaction in the organism’s DNA thus
preventing it from multiplying. The effectiveness of UV disinfection relies
on the applied UV dose (i.e., the result of the time and UV intensity that
the microorganism is exposed to within the UV System).
5-Step UV System Sizing ProcessYour Emperor Aquatics, Inc. service representative will carefully guide you through the UV system sizing process. Your representative will also provide you with
critical technology information while following our UV system purchasing-sizing protocol.
Our 5-Step UV System sizing process addresses critical operating characteristics that ensure you will select the best SafeGUARD UV System for your application.
Our clients typically know their target microorganism when inquiring about a UV system. Our UV
Dose Chart includes known UV doses for some common pathogens found in aquaculture. There are
approximately 65,000 known protozoa and 4,500 bacteria, all of which require their own specific UV-C
dose. Your Emperor Aquatics, Inc. representative will help you establish a target microorganism and,
in turn, your required (minimum) UV Dose.
The next step in sizing any UV system is to determine the required capacity based on worst-case water
conditions (low %T).
Step 2: Assessing Water Quality (UV Light Transmittance)
UV transmittance (UVT) is not turbidity! The water’s clarity is not an effective indicator, because both solid and dissolved
material can absorb UV light. For example: metals (iron) in water are not visible to the human eye but absorb UV light
and have a negative impact on UVT. UVT is the transmission of UV light (254 nm) through water. Regarding Aquaculture
applications, flow-through fish-culture systems requiring influent disinfection typically test at 75-95%T. In contrast, RAS
(recirculating aquaculture systems) typically test lower at 50-85%T. Application conditions vary and, therefore, must be
evaluated individually.
UVT must be considered when sizing any UV system. Using a meter is the only method
of determining an application’s true %T. It is important to mention that UVT is not linear. The
UVT Chart (right) reveals actual fluence (UV dose) loss based on % UV transmittance (%T).
The Real UVT Field Meter manufactured by RealTech Inc. is available in both in-line and
portable versions. Your EAI Representative can assist you with more information.

Step 2 continued: Assessing Water Quality (UV Light Transmittance)
Step 3: Building Your SafeGUARD UV System
Your Emperor Aquatics, Inc. representative will provide you with UV System options. Choose between plastic
or stainless steel UV vessels, as well as sophisticated or basic controls. No other UV system manufacturer
offers you this degree of flexibility and cost-savings. Once all critical operating factors and system details
are known (water flow, UV dose, material of construction, monitor/control options), your representative will
suggest the SafeGUARD UV model that best fits your application and budget.
Step 4: Review the cost of ownership
Most UV system manufacturers are reluctant to share cost of ownership numbers for their equipment. EAI, on
the other hand, is excited to share this information with clients, because we know our SafeGUARD UVs have
proven to be the most reliable, operator-friendly, and cost-effective UV Systems on the market.
Step 5: System Price Quotation & Emperor Aquatics, Inc. Performance Certifi cate
Your Emperor Aquatics, Inc. representative can provide a UV System Performance Verification
Certificate with the UV system price quotation. This certificate guarantees that the SafeGUARD
UV System you purchase will achieve the operating performance (UV dose) we specify. UV
System performance is calculated by the Bolton Photosciences UV CALC Modeling Program.

The above line-graph illustrates how a lower %T parallels a diminished UV dose when operating our SafeGUARD UV System Model CLP6960A8 at a flow-rate of

Each SafeGUARD UV System is designed using calculations of intensity and hydraulics from independent,
substantiated sources such as the Bolton Photosciences UV CALC Modeling Program. This, in combination with
biological testing, verifies the expected performance of our UV Systems.
Bolton Photosciences Inc.’s UVCalc software results have been studied and tested experimentally in comparison
with biodosimetry tests to confirm the accuracy of its results. The exercises definitively indicated that the UVCalc
predictions are accurate. Bolton Photosciences and the UVCalc program are recognized by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) as a UV Authority.
To learn more about Bolton Photosciences and the UV CALC sof tware visit www.boltonuv.com
According to NSF International, “The SafGUARD
UV System’s NSF/ANSI 50 certification bioessay
achieved an impressive 6-log reduction.” This
demonstrates that our conservative approach to
using UV technology achieves reliable germicidal
disinfection!
It must be noted that the Bolton Photosciences
UVCalc Modeling Program was used in our NSF-50
testing.
SafeGUARD UV Systems have been approved and
cer tified by various independent organizations,
including Underwriters Laboratories (508A).
Validation Notes:The EPA Manual 815-R-06-007 section 3.6 Assessing UV Equipment Validation Issues describes validation issues
and protocols. The EPA Drinking Water Validation is the only one of its kind and Emperor Aquatics, Inc. follows this
protocol.
It must be mentioned that validation DOES NOT umbrella a UV system manufacturer’s entire product line, but
rather, only the specific UV model tested and the specific conditions present at the time of testing.
Validation of any UV system is very expensive and typically not practical or necessary for aquaculture.

UV Information
The Cost of UV Lamp Technology
All LP and MP UV Systems operate the same, but have very different results!
1. LP UV systems use 3x less electricity to produce the same UV-C light output as MP UV systems.
2. LP UV systems convert 35-40% of their initial power input into UV-C light, MP UV systems only convert 11-15%.
3. LP UV lamps last 12,000 hours, while MP UV lamps only last 1,200-4,000 hours.
4. LP UV lamps operate at 180°F, MP UV lamps operate at 1,600°F .
The Light Spectrum Chart above is universal. It represents all Low-Pressure (LP) and Medium-Pressure (MP) UV lamps. Both LP UV Lamps (Red) and MP UV
Lamps (Green) spectral output is identified. Notice the broad spectral output of an MP UV lamp, all of its spectral output outside the Germicidal Action Curve is
wasted. In contrast, LP UV lamps, with their bulk spectral output inside the Germicidal Action Curve, are 3x more efficient and better suited for germicidal disinfection.
Low-Pressure vs. Medium-Pressure
All Medium-Pressure (MP) UV systems cost two to three times more to operate than Low-Pressure (LP)
UV systems of equal capacity when applied to Germicidal Disinfection Applications.
Question: So why do Aquatic Life Support System (ALSS) customers mistakenly choose MP UV systems?
Answer: This is because MP UV system manufacturers recognize the market’s sensitivity to space. They promote a compact size, while neglecting to share negative operating characteristics (power consumption, low UV-C light output, short useful lamp life, and high-heat generation).

High Flow/High UV Dose Applications
Our Low-Head UV Reactors provide a cost-savings alternative to shell & tube style UV systems for large applications (water-flow exceeding 2,000 GPM). Our
Low-Head UV Reactors require no on-site channel. The Low-Head Reactor is designed to minimize pressure-loss while providing high-flow UV dose performance.
We use the latest UV technology—energy-efficient, high-intensity Amalgam lamps—for optimal performance and best cost-of-ownership. Routine servicing is
simple for facility staff with our easy-access lamp/quartz sleeve modules. All external UV components are corrosion-resistant.
Our corrosion-resistant NEMA Type 12 Power Supply Enclosure is operator-friendly and designed for in-field service capabilit y. Our simple, yet efficient, lamp/
quartz sleeve module design eliminates the need for expensive and troublesome quar tz sleeve wiping systems. This single factor carries significant cost
savings. SafeGUARD UV Reactors are available in diverse lamp configurations.
Low-Head UV Reactors minimize electrical consumption because they do not require “high-head” (high RPM) pumps. In many situations they can operate by
gravity. Our reactors are constructed of either Schedule-80 Modified PVC or fiber glass, depending upon the application. They are equipped with an internal
baf fling system that controls the water-flow through the lamp field to achieve reliable UV dose delivery.
Reactors feature a mid-section flange for easy assembly and maintenance. Single-end, UV lamp and
quartz sleeve access allows for quick and easy change-outs, resulting in reduced maintenance/labor.
We offer a variety of lamp configurations to address the unique requirements of your specific application.

Cost-effective High-Flow/High UV Dose Solutions Large-scale Flow-Through or Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are of ten threatened by harmful pathogen infestation. Designers of these systems are
challenged with determining the most cost-efficient germicidal disinfection solution. SafeGUARD Vertical Open-Channel UV Systems offer proven reliability at
the best cost! The SafeGUARD Vertical UV System advantage is its operator-friendly design: easy-to-service glassware reduces maintenance and labor.
SafeGUARD Vertical Open-Channel UV Systems are available in VCPP (Vertical Channel Plastic Plate) or VCPF (Vertical Channel Plastic Frame). Both styles are
manufactured to your application’s specific parameters. Select the monitor/control package that best suits your facility and budget.
SafeGUARD Vertical Open-Channel UV System
Operator FriendlyCompared to Horizontal “Rack Style” Open-Channel UV Systems, the SafeGUARD Vertical Open-Channel UV System simplifies glassware removal, allowing for
individual lamp servicing without disrupting system water flow or other lamps. No hoists or additional equipment required for lamp and sleeve maintenance.
Proven UV Germicidal Disinfection & Ozone Destruct Thousands of SafeGUARD UV Systems are operating around the globe right now. Freshwater Institute’s Dr. Steven Summerfelt has successfully used one of our
open-channel UV systems at his research facility in Shepherdstown, West Virginia for more than 11 years. Other successful SafeGUARD Open-Channel UV
System applications include flow-through and RAS salmon/trout juvenile systems.
Reduced Engineering and Installation CostsSafeGUARD Vertical Open-Channel UV Systems are designed and manufactured to each application’s specific parameters (flow, %T, channel dimensions).
The UV System is manufactured, crated, and shipped to anywhere in the world, ready for installation.
Simplicity & Reliability by ComparisonOperators tell us that Horizontal “Rack Style” UV Systems are cumbersome. To service an individual lamp the entire rack must be removed. That is not the case
with SafeGUARD UV Systems! All SafeGUARD UV Systems are designed for easy in-field servicing to reduce the need for expensive outside service contractors.

Vertical Channel Plastic PlateOur VCPP UV Systems are our most cost-efficient High-flow UV system solution. The entire system consists of power enclosure, glassware module plates
(upper & lower), and glassware. The simplicity of this design increases the system’s versatility, making it adaptable to many applications. System
servicing is easy and required labor is minimized with the single-end glassware access.
Glassware module plates are engineered to specific application parameters, such as lamp array and plate dimensions, and will be identified on the UV system’s
shop-drawing. One of the VCPP system’s largest benefits is the savings on freight costs due to a minimized crate footprint. Service walkways and cable-
conduits are to be supplied by the client or General Contractor.

Design/Engineering
We work with your design-engineer to create the UV system that best suits your application. Your design-engineer supplies us with the application’s existing water
conditions, desired fluence, water flow rate, channel dimensions, and power requirements (mechanical drawing). Utilizing this information, we can provide a budget-
ary price quote, and with a deposit, we will also supply shop-drawings of the customized UV system.
Installation
Correct installation of plates and frames require a smooth and level channel
surface. Lamp fields of greater depth than the existing channel may require
modifications to the channel site. Your EAI Representative will carefully guide you
through the system design process, ensuring the system meets your specifications.
Commissioning
After installation, but prior to start up, an EAI Representative or Authorized
Service Contractor will make a scheduled site visit to inspect the UV system. System
orientation with operators and support staff will also be performed at that time. Commissioning
will ensure that the UV system was properly installed so you can receive the intended solution.
VerticalOpen-Channel cont.
Vertical Channel Plastic Frame The VCPF UV System is very similar to the VCPP but instead of using plates to orient the lamp field, a glassware frame is used. The VCPF system consists of
power enclosure, lamp-field frame, and glassware. The frame is typically shipped from our facility ready for installation into the awaiting channel. System
servicing is easy and required labor is minimized with the single-end glassware access.
The Glassware Frame is engineered to specific application parameters, such as lamp array and channel dimensions, and will be identified on the UV system’s

Diffi cult to operate and serviceFacility staff who have operated and serviced “Horizontal Rack” UV systems say they are cumbersome and difficult to work with. Horizontal Rack Style UV
systems use racks to hold multiple UV lamps. Each lamp is housed inside a quartz sleeve that must be disassembled from the rack before the lamp is accessible.
Operators servicing Horizontal Racks must remove an entire rack to service one lamp. Often, these systems are fitted with troublesome quartz sleeve wiping
mechanisms that further complicate the maintenance process and frequently results in broken glass.
Competitor’s “Horizontal Rack Style” UV SystemsCumbersome...diffi cult to work with!
Our Basic Monitor/Control package simplifies operation and is best suited for facilities
operating with a limited staff or those that do not require sophisticated controls. The
Basic package is simple, because it involves no sophisticated software and is oper-
ated manually by using the external On/Off Switch.
Choose your SafeGUARD UV System Monitor/Controls
Create the UV System Monitor/Control Package that best suits your application and budget. Many facilities are short-staffed and prefer simple controls while others
are regulated and require more sophisticated solutions. Emperor Aquatics, Inc. is cognizant of the diverse needs and budgetary concerns of our clients, which is
why we focus on design-flexibility.
SafeGUARD UV Systems are equipped standard with our Basic Monitor/Control package, but are easily upgraded to our PLC (Programmable Logic Control)
package. Monitor/Control packages must be selected at the time of your UV system purchase. They are not interchangeable and cannot be retrofitted into existing
systems. Your Emperor Aquatics, Inc. support representative will assist you throughout the Monitor/Control selection process.
• Main Power Indicator Light Identifies that power is reaching the power supply enclosure
(when the external On/Off switch is in the “ON” position).
• Elapsed Run-Time Hour Meter Identifies operating hours of the UV lamps. When the lamps are
replaced, the operator can reset the meter with the reset button.
• UV Lamp Status Indicators Bright LEDs signify normal lamp operation. When dim, the lamp
is not operating properly. An unlit LED (not dim) signifies that the
lamp’s ballast is not operating and requires service.
• 20218 Optional Over-Temperature System Shutdown (recommended w/ Plastic Vessels) Optional temperature sensor is mounted on the UV vessel.
When the water temperature inside the vessel exceeds
120°F the system shuts down the lamp field to avoid heat
damage and potential failure.

• Incoming AC Voltage Monitor Monitors input voltage to the UV system. Factory-set threshold triggers an alarm when the value
falls outside the acceptable threshold. Threshold parameters: 120 VAC 95-140 VAC, 230 VAC
210-270 VAC. Digitally displays value.
• Total Operating Hours Meter Measures the Total Operating Hours and may be reset by the operator. Status is digitally displayed.
• Lamp Status & Lamp Life Monitor Scans all active UV lamp inputs (depending on the UV system’s number of lamps). PLC triggers an alarm when an inactive lamp is detected. Each lamp is
equipped with an individual hour meter stored in EEPROM for data retention upon power removal. Monitors for end-of-useful-lamp-life (12,000 hours). When
reached, triggers an alarm (72-hour reoccurring alarm). Status is digitally displayed.
• Power Supply Enclosure Temperature Monitor Monitors the internal temperature of the Power Supply Enclosure. Factory-set temperature threshold will trigger an alarm at 140°F. Temperatures exceeding the
140°F will trigger the PLC to shutdown the lamp field and set off an alarm to protect the internal hardware from heat damage. PLC digitally displays this value.
• UV Vessel Water Temperature Sensor Monitors the internal temperature of the UV vessel. Factory-set temperature threshold is 120°F and, if reached, will cause the PLC to shut down the lamp field and
activate an alarm. Additionally, if the water temperature sensor cable is interrupted or disconnected the entire UV system will shut down and activate an alarm.
• UV Intensity Sensor Monitors the UV Intensity inside the UV vessel and measures lamp UV-C output percent (0%-100%). Features include an alarm set-point used with the PLC output
alarm relay. An alarm trip set-point is triggered anywhere on the 1%-100% scale. Package includes one sensor probe.
• Alarm Relay One discrete output relay circuit (100-milliamp, normally open “Form A” contact) is provided to allow for alarm enunciation of any of the following monitored
conditions: lamp failure, low UV intensity, vessel water over-temperature, enclosure over-temperature, end of useful lamp life, under/over input voltage alarm,
and optional lamp field safety cover.
Our sophisticated PLC Monitor/Control Package is microprocessor based and features a menu-
driven, digital inter face with touch-pad for easy command initiation. The PLC is integrated into the
UV system’s power supply enclosure and is available with all SafeGUARD UV systems (except the
HOSS series UV Systems). Our PLC systems offer the convenience of programmable logic
controllers for integration with remote SCADA systems.

Hach 1735 TRO Total Residual Oxidant Analyzer
Primary DisinfectantOzone is not Instant Treatment, rather it requires that the target
pathogen be exposed to specific concentrations for an extended
period of time. For example: successful ozone disinfection in fresh-
water, targeting IPNV (Infectious Pancreatic Nacreous Virus), requires an
ozone concentration of 0.15 mg/l for a period of 15 minutes (Cryer, 1992 #670). If this is the case, it means a Flow-Through or RAS with a water flow of 3,000 GPM
(11,355 LPM) would require an ozone contact area large enough to effectively complete disinfection, and for most RAS, this is simply not practical.
UV disinfection is Instant Treatment and at a fluence (UV dose) of 246 mJ/cm², it achieves a 4-log (99.99%) reduction of the pathogen IPNV. This means that a
UV system with a disinfection capacity large enough to treat 3,000 GPM (11,355 LPM) will successfully achieve germicidal disinfection on a single-pass inside the
UV vessel. Therefore, UV disinfection is the best choice as a primary germicidal disinfectant.
A Great CombinationOZONE (clarifier) and UV (disinfectant) work well together! Ozone, being the powerful oxidizer it is, improves the UV Transmittance (UVT) in culture water, helping
the UV system, positioned downstream of the ozone treatment, to perform more ef fectively. For instance, testing an RAS for UVT may reveal a 75%T. With
appropriate ozone treatment, that 75%T could be increased to 90%T. The increased %T, from 75%T to 90%T dramatically increases the efficiency of the downstream
UV system, and in many cases, reduces the size of the required UV system. All ALSS are unique, and so we are forced to apply ozone and UV differently based on
the specific conditions and requirements of each application.
TRO (Total Residual Oxidant) AlertIf bromide (Br) is present in the water (ground water or seawater), a reaction is possible with the by-product being
hypobromous acid and hypobromite, which are harmful to aquatic life. Controlling ozone addition in seawater applications
is necessary. There, ozone should only be used as a clarifier; enough to clarify (0.001 mg/l – 350 mv), and yet even with
this super low concentration the formation of TRO’s (Total Residual Oxidants) remains possible.
The accepted method among the Aquaculture community to measure ozone concentrations, especially super-low
concentrations (0.001 mg/l – 350 mv) is to use an ORP (Oxygen Reduction Potential) Meter. It must be mentioned that
due to the unstable characteristics of ozone, ORP meters are not as reliable at measuring ozone concentrations as
Ozone Analyzers. Unfortunately, few analyzers are available that can measure such super-low concentrations (below
.05 mg/l). Therefore, in seawater applications (especially RAS), both an ORP meter/controller, to measure and maintain
the low ozone concentration, and a Total Residual Oxidant (TRO) Meter, to measure and detect dangerous TRO’s,
should be employed.
For more information regarding seawater and ozone see: “Ozone Application and Brominated By-Products: Monitoring, Formation, and Destruction in Water
Recirculating Systems for Fish Culture” (Steven T. Summerfelt, Susan Clements, and Michael Gearheart).
OzoneSystemsOzone & UV... A Great Combination! Ozone is a powerful oxidant and is very beneficial with improving
water quality in Aquatic Life Support Systems (ALSS). Ozone
oxidizes NO2 & NO3, helping to remove color, dissolved organic
wastes, and micro-flocculates fine organic particulate, as well as
improving dissolved oxygen levels. Ozone delivers a noticeable
benefit in water quality, especially when applied to Recirculating
Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which is why many system design-
ers and operators are attracted to it. At the same time, ozone
also optimizes conditions for UV disinfection. Yes, both ozone
and UV disinfection can work together within the ALSS to offer
superior results, specifically, improved UV light transmittance,
which increases the UV system’s effectiveness—boosting the
germicidal disinfection capacity.

Safety ControlAs mentioned previously, all ALSS are unique; however, there is one important similarity, in that a residual concentration of ozone greater than 0.001 mg/l can be
harmful to fish and invertebrates. Safety protocols must be established and closely followed. For example, an ozone concentration of 0.03 mg/l is ef fective
at controlling Saprolegnia, but allowing that same ozone concentration to reach the eggs or fish would cause them harm. Reliable ozone control is required.
Placing a properly sized UV system downstream of the 0.03 mg/l ozone treatment can provide reliable ozone destruct.
Ozone Destruct using UV:Fluence of 60 mJ/cm² destructs ozone concentration of 0.1 mg/l
90 mJ/cm² destructs 0.3 mg/l
Automating ozone control to achieve reliability is recommended. Integrating the ozone generator operation with the UV system establishes a safety-firewall,
protecting vulnerable livestock from potentially dangerous ozone. Applying a quality TRO Meter and implementing these control measures are especially
important when applying ozone treatment to seawater systems.
LHO – O3 – UVThe greatest challenge working with ozone in ALSS is getting it into the culture water. Various methods exist that include: venturi injection, bubble contactors, and
pressurized reactors. Larger systems with high bio-densities, and high flows, create additional challenges; many associated with cost. Shown here is a stacked
CO2 stripper with an LHO (Low Head Oxygenator) tower. This arrangement, with the substitution of ozone for oxygen, combined with UV disinfection creates a
powerful and efficient filtering combination.
LHO-O3-UV Process1. Mechanically filtered (minimum 60 μm) water enters the CO2 stripper where it is de-gassed, increasing pH and gas-exchange.
2. Ozone injection takes place at the LHO; concentrations of up to 0.3 mg/l are possible.
3. The tower’s sump provides additional contact-time for the ozone to work on remaining organic material in the culture water.
4. Culture water exiting the tower is at its highest water quality within the ALSS.
5. The properly sized UV system destructs any residual ozone while providing reliable and effective germicidal disinfection.
In this ALSS scenario, the ozone generator controls are interfaced into the UV system’s PLC. The UV system PLC’s integrated ORP Meter measures ozone concentration
and, with set-points inputted, controls the operation of the ozone generator. Ultimately, if the UV system was to fail or an ozone (ORP) measurement exceeded the
safety set-point, the UV’s PLC would shut down the ozone generator.

The Primozone Ozone Generator is the world’s most sophisticated ozone generator. It produces ozone with a very high concentration, in a compact package, and is
energy efficient.
Cutting-edge Ozone TechnologyThe patented technology behind the Flat-Plate Plasma Reactor is what makes Primozone Ozone Generators so
efficient. Made from stainless steel and aluminum, Primozone Ozone Generators are easy to operate and service.
With a very high concentration, operators can expect to produce more than 300g O3/Nm3o2, which is equivalent
of 20 wt%, with an absolute gas pressure of 3.2 bars. This means the Primozone Ozone Generator uses less than
half the amount of oxygen compared to a traditional ozone generator.
Tests at the Norwegian Institute of Technology have measured 98% dissolution in less than 3 minutes. The high gas
pressure makes it possible to distribute ozone long distances and also improves the effectiveness of the dissolu-
tion. The Primozone Ozone Generator can be operated on either on-site concentrated oxygen or liquid oxygen (LOX).
Sophisticated Control SystemThe integrated control system with its unique features allows for precise control of ozone levels produced at any given
time. The control system also allows for monitoring and control of ozone levels, oxygen flow, and alarms. With the
optional Primozone System External Controller it is possible to: connect the ozone generator to other control systems,
connect several Primozone Ozone Generators together, and utilize remote operation and monitoring.
Energy Effi cient – Cost EffectiveThe amount of oxygen used will vary proportionally based on the amount of ozone produced, thus the total energy
consumption is low. A potential energy savings of up to 70% is possible compared to traditional ozone systems.
Small FootprintA Primozone Ozone Generator’s compact size saves space and fits in most locations. Do not be concerned with the
risk of powerful magnetic fields – it’s EMC-approved and does not interfere with other electronic devices.

Energy Consumption
Technical DataPrimozone offers 4 different ozone generators with an ozone capacity that ranges from 100g-900g ozone per hour. A combination of two or more generators can
cover larger needs.
TOTAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION/kg O3 =OXYGEN GENERATION + OZONE GENERATION
TOTAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION/kg O3 =OXYGEN GENERATION + OZONE GENERATION + CAPACITY
At 100% capactiy and a concentration of 200g O3/Nm3O2 the Primozone
Technology uses 21% less energy than conventional technology because
of a much lower oxygen consumption.
With Primozone Technology, the consumption of oxygen varies according to
the capacity. This means large energy savings at periods of lower capacity or
when the capacity varies over the day.

DEL Ozone CD Series Ozone Generators feature 20kHz frequency and ceramic tube dielectric ozone generator cells that deliver consistent, reliable ozone production.
DEL Ozone models CD-2 through CD-45 feature configurable feed gas options, multiple safety features, and sturdy, reliable construction. DEL Ozone CD
models are designed to create ozone for aqueous and gaseous applications. Accessories include ORP meter, dissolved ozone, and ambient monitor/controllers.
Emperor Aquatics, Inc. has selected the DEL Ozone CD model line due to their unique Integrated Oxygen Concentrator arrangement and we encourage our
customers to consider this critical feature when purchasing this equipment. Supplying an ozone generator oxygen rather than ambient air greatly reduces the buildup
of nitrogen by-products inside the ozone generator cells. The result is optimal ozone output performance with reliable operation.

FoamFractionation
Protein Skimmers/Foam Fractionators
What is Foam Fractionation? The design of Aquatic Life Support Systems, Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to be more specific, are more frequently adding foam fractionation (protein
skimming) into the filter loop. The presence of organic wastes, such as carbon, both dissolved and suspended, lowers dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, and redox
potential. Foam fractionation is a unique process with truly beneficial results. It removes both dissolved and suspended organic material, improving water quality.
How Foam Fractionation WorksThe end goal of foam fractionation is to collect and remove organic wastes (carbon) through processes of adsorption and flocculation resulting in improved water
quality. Foam Fractionation is essentially the mixing of air with water to create dense foam. By design, foam fractionation mixes micro-fine air bubbles with the culture
water. Organic material in the culture water is adsorbed onto the bubble-wall, rises and flocculates into thick foam which is continuously discharged from the filter and
pulled out of the system. The discharged foam is made up of particles that contain a significant concentration of organic carbon. By discharging organic carbon from
the system, organic biodegradation is decreased within the system.
Ozone InjectionOzone often enhances the foam fractionation process, specifically when applied to freshwater applications. Seawater (SG 1.025 g/Im) is denser than freshwater (SG
1.0) and is more conducive to the production of micro-fine air bubbles. It is for this reason that ozone may not be necessary to achieve optimum foam fractionation
performance in seawater. Freshwater, on the other hand, typically requires a small amount of ozone (350 mv) to enhance the process of adsorption and micro-flocculation.
It should be mentioned that a higher ozone level (above 350 mv) inhibits organic waste adsorption and micro-flocculation.
Benefi ts of Foam FractionationAchieving successful Foam Fractionation increases pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, redox potential, and UV light transmittance. Most aquatic life support systems
can greatly benefit from foam fractionation. Additionally, foam fractionation acts as a germicidal disinfectant - discharged foam contains bacteria ranging in size from
0.4 - 3.0 um.

Egg Incubation
High-Capacity Egg Incubation
SafeGUARD Up-Welling Incubators virtually eliminate Dead-Flow pockets, which
are a leading contributor to fungal problems. The constant upward water-flow holds
the eggs in suspension, eliminating those troublesome stagnant areas common
with “tray-st yle” incubators. Up-welling Incubators also deliver comparable
hatch rates to the tray incubators, but with far less labor and without chemical
treatments! Removing problematic dead eggs from up-welling incubators is easy.
The up-flow water circulation forces dead eggs to the surface where they can be removed with ease.
Our Egg Incubators are made of polycarbonate and ABS plastic with PVC plumbing
and are supplied with a gate valve for precise flow control.
• Up-Flow reduces the labor of separating dead eggs, egg shells,
and debris.
• Eliminates stagnant areas.
• Up-flow water circulation holds eggs in suspension to prevent
fungus from attaching to, and smothering fertile eggs.
• Easy-to-remove lid allows for quick removal of dead eggs, egg

Combine our Up-Welling Egg Incubators with UV to provide protection against
harmful waterborne bacteria and fungus. Saprolegnia zoospores (fungi)
requires a UV exposure rate of 39.6 mJ/cm². We recommend a minimum UV exposure of 60 mJ/cm² when applying UV with incubators. You can
purchase the incubators and UV System separately or together on our
incubator and UV rolling rack system. Choose between either 3 or 6
incubator systems.
Call us for more information on the rolling rack system.
