Emirates Air Lines announced its fleet plans for 2016. The fleet strategy aims at improving environ-mental performance and passenger comfort with an increased reliance on modern, new wide-body aircraft.

In total, the air-line will retire 26 aircraft, includ-ing 12 A330-300s, 4 A340-300s, 1 A340-500, 6 Boe-ing 777-200ERs, 2 Boeing 777-300s and 1 Boeing 777-300ER. The average age of the Emir-ates aircraft slated for retirement in 2016 will be 15.7 years, well-below the average industry retirement age of 25. In addition, 13 more aircraft will be retired in 2017 and another 13 will be retired in 2018.

Balancing its aircraft retirement programme, Emirates will take de-livery of 36 new aircraft in 2016, including 20 A380s and 16 Boeing 777-300ERs. These two aircraft

types are recognised as some of the most efficient and quiet commer-cial airplanes available, emitting on average 12% less carbon dioxide than the aircraft being retired. At the end of 2016, the aircraft retire-ments and new deliveries will put Emirates’ average fleet age at 5.6

Emirates fleet retirements Fleet strategy to focus on new wide bodies

ERA responds to Europe-wide aviation strategy The European Commission’s (EC’s) Aviation Strategy, published on 7 December, is designed to address a range of topics and create a stronger and more competitive European air-line sector. The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) welcomes the EC’s recognition that aviation is a key driver of economic growth, jobs, trade and mobility and that a strategic review of the sector is needed to ensure that European aviation maintains its leadership of this global market. However, the ERA says many of the actions proposed in the EC’s strategy are short term, have no distinct timelines and do not pro-vide a strong and clear action plan to strengthen Europe’s aviation indus-try. Overall, ERA believes that the strategy will not increase the long-term competitiveness of the industry compared to other methods of trans-port and non-European competitors. However, ERA is ready to work with the EC, Council and Parliament to ensure that the strategy is modified to deliver on its original intent - a stronger, fitter and more efficient air transport system.

Budapest Airport hits definitive 10 million markFor the first time in its history, Buda-pest Airport has hit the definitive 10 million passenger mark, setting a new record for annual passengers for the second year in a row. Last month saw the Hungarian gateway experience its 12th consecutive double-digit month of passenger traffic growth, more than double the European average. Endorsed by the airport’s strength-ening of existing flights, bedding-in of new carriers, and the expansion of route choice, the capital city airport is one of Europe’s fastest growing air-ports in 2015. In the past 12 months alone, the airport has celebrated the arrival of three new airlines.

with a superior level of comfort and safety. With the retirement of older aircraft and the introduction of new, more fuel efficient aircraft in 2016, Emirates will continue to lead the in-dustry in reducing the age of our fleet, while at the same time defining new levels of service that our customers have come to expect.”

Currently, the total number of aircraft in the Emirates fleet stands at 244. In 2015, the air-line received 26 new aircraft, including 15 A380s, 10 Boeing 777-300ERs and 1 Boeing 777 Freighter. The airline has 262 additional aircraft on order, worth over US$120 billion at list prices. Its order book includes 71 Airbus A380s, 42 Boeing 777-300ERs, 115 Boeing 777-9Xs and 35 Boeing 777-8Xs.

When delivered beginning in 2020, the new Boeing 777Xs will come with a variety of fuel efficient design additions making it almost 20% more fuel efficient than previous models. It will also include a range of passenger-focused amenities including larger windows, increased cabin pressure, more humidity, higher ceilings and a wider cabin than previ-ous models.

In addition to reducing the age of its fleet, Emirates also implements a variety of other environmental practices that reduces CO2 emis-sions. These include FlexTracks, a programme that plans efficient flight route patterns based on weather conditions; single-engine taxi on the ground; idle reverse thrust upon landing; and fuel-efficient ground han-dling and transportation equipment.

ATR receives EASA certification for high-densi-ty cabin layout

The high-density seating configuration option for the ATR 72-600 aircraft has received its cer-tification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Using the existing airframe, the new high-density configuration option is achieved by optimizing the pitch and adjusting

the cargo compartment, increasing the aircraft maximum capacity from 74 to 78 seats. ATR’s greater passenger capacity further enhances airline revenue potential. The option will also be available as a retrofit. Cebu Pacific was the first airline to choose the high-density seat-ing in a deal for sixteen new ATR 72-600s an-nounced at the Paris Airshow earlier this year. The first aircraft in the 78-seat layout will enter commercial service in August 2016. The addi-tional seats are very valuable for airlines oper-ating in the regions where traffic grows rapidly and the demand is highly sensitive to fare price.

Trans-Pacific Aerospace receives purchase or-der for Chinese commercial aerospace sector

Trans-Pacific Aerospace Company has reported that a purchase order has been placed by a Chinese aerospace manufacturer for special-ized self-lubricating bearings to be used in the Chinese commercial aerospace sector for pro-duction purposes. Bill mcKay, the CEO of TPAC, stated: “This is a significant event for TPAC. The order, which is in excess of US$100,000 repre-sents far more than the monetary value there-of. We have worked very hard in the develop-ment and marketing of these bearings and are the only company in China able to meet the ex-acting blueprint requirements for performance. While it has taken a long time from product development to sales, our patience and efforts have been rewarded. We have seen over the past several months an increase in aerospace production and buying in China and are opti-mistic that we will become an integral part of this domestic expansion.”

(IATA) has announced its airline industry outlook for 2016 which sees an average net profit margin of 5.1% being generated with total net profits of US$36.3bn. IATA also announced a revision to its airline industry outlook for 2015 upwards to a net profit of US$33bn (4.6% net profit margin) from US$29.3bn forecast in June. The strengthening industry performance is being driven by a combination of factors:Lower oil prices (forecast to be $55/barrel Brent in 2015 and averaging a lower $51/barrel in 2016) are giving airline profits a boost; however this is strongly moderated in many markets by the appreciation of the US dollar. Strong demand for passenger travel (+6.7% growth in 2015 and +6.9% in 2016) is making up for disappointing cargo demand growth (+1.9% in 2015; strength-ening to 3.0% in 2016). Weak cargo performance reflects sluggish growth in trade. Stronger eco-nomic performance in some key economies (in-cluding a faster than expected recovery in the Eurozone) is outweighing the overall impact of slower growth in China and the downturn in the

Brazilian economy. Global GDP growth is expect-ed to improve to 2.7% in 2016 (up from 2.5% for 2015). Efficiency gains by airlines are illustrated by record high load factors (80.6% in 2015, ta-pering slightly to 80.4% in 2016). Capacity is in-creasing and is expected to move ahead of de-mand growth in 2016. Yields, however, continue to deteriorate amid stiff competition. “This is a good news story. The airline industry is deliver-ing solid financial and operational performance. Passengers are benefiting from greater value than ever—with competitive airfares and prod-uct investments. Environmental performance is improving. more people and businesses are being connected to more places than ever. Em-ployment levels are rising. And finally our share-holders are beginning to enjoy normal returns on their investments,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO. In 2016 total passen-ger numbers are expected to rise to 3.8 billion traveling over some 54,000 routes. In both 2015 and 2016 the industry’s return on capital (8.3% and 8.6% respectively) is expected to exceed the

metric tons. Overall, Fraport AG’s international airport portfolio achieved mixed results in No-vember 2015. Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport (LJU) welcomed 93,944 passengers, a noticeable gain of 11.2%. Serving 1.4 million passengers, Lima Airport (LIM) in the capital of Peru recorded strong growth of 8.9%. The Bulgarian Black Sea airports of Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) rose slightly by 1.1% to 40,668 passengers. Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey registered 1.1 million passengers, down 3.4% year-on-year. Influenced by the weak local economy, St Petersburg’s Pulk-ovo Airport (LED) in Russia experienced a 14.6% drop to 797,257 passengers. At Hanover Airport (HAJ) in northern Germany, traffic declined by 5% to 381,986 passengers. China’s Xi’an Airport (XIY) greeted 2.6 million passengers, represent-ing a 9.5% traffic surge.

its OASES operations.

Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) traffic in November 2015 was impacted strongly by Lufthansa’s flight attendant strike. The week-long walkout and its effects on the days following the strike resulted in about half a million passengers being unable to start their journeys at FRA – as well as the can-cellation of 3,400 scheduled flights. Thus, Frank-furt Airport’s passenger volume decreased sig-nificantly in the reporting month by 11.3% to 3.9 million compared to the same month last year. The trend was also reflected in the 10.2% drop in aircraft movements to 33,337 takeoffs and land-ings. The accumulated maximum takeoff weights (mTOWs) fell by 7.8% to some 2.2 million metric tons, while Frankfurt’s cargo throughput (air-freight and airmail) slipped by 3.6% to 195,505

Recommended EventsThe International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Districts 141 and 142 announced tentative agreements with Hawaiian Airlines that cover the carrier’s 2,200 mechanic and Related, Clerical, Office, Stores, Fleet, and Passenger Service employees. The proposed five-year contract provides pay raises retroactively from October 1, 2015, enhances job security, holds the line on healthcare costs for employees, and secures profit sharing and incentive programs. Negotiations between IAm and Hawaiian Airlines have been ongoing since December 2013.

As part of a contract with Lockheed Martin Commercial Flight Training, Rockwell Collins’ integrated visual systems will be featured on two Airbus A320 full flight simulators that will be based at Airbus’s new training centers in mexico City, mexico. “Our integrated visual systems are proven in the most challenging training exercis-es, which is especially valuable for airlines whose routes take them to some of the busiest and most difficult airports in the region,” said LeAnn Ridgeway, Vice President Simulation and Train-ing Solutions for Rockwell Collins. “In addition, our visual system solution delivers a significant reduction in life-cycle cost. This aligns perfectly with the ‘Training by Airbus’ strategy to ensure service and support throughout the operational life of an airline’s Airbus fleet.”
