SOHAN ROY S.K.

CEO, Aries Group, UAEGROUP OF COMPANIES

NDT is a highly valuable technique that does not permanently alter the article

being inspected; it saves both time and money in product evaluation,

troubleshooting and research. Being a high end technique there are very few

events in the world which promote NDT. Marine BizTV, the Global Maritime TV

channel in association with Aries Marine, the leading surveyors and NDT firm

have joined hands to organize an International Conference on NDT where

professionals from all sectors, including Industrial, Marine and Offshore, will

converge at the most happening maritime hub of the world- Dubai. This

technical forum is aimed to promote effective communication and information

exchange amongst the key professionals of the industry who play a key role in

the development and advancement of NDT. I am also happy that the R&D wing

of our NDT division has come up with the initiative to provide all intelligent

support to this event. The conference would be valuable to anyone involved with

maintaining integrity of a facility; In addition to that, the associated exhibition

will also allow world class NDT vendors to show their products and services to the

conference attendees.

NDT level 4 will itself be a revolution in the field of Non Destructive Testing where

like minds will meet to discuss and exchange their ideas and share new

innovations. Apart from being the valuable store house of knowledge, NDT Level

4 is all set to provide the highest branding and marketing opportunities. The

event will be witnessed by million of viewers across the world live on

www.live.marinebiztv.com

I also wish to take this opportunity to thank all our well wishers, supporters and

sponsors who have made this event possible. We believe you will keep providing

us with your unrelenting support to all our endeavors. Let this event be another

feather, a revolution in the NDT world.

“The American Welding Society sincerely congratulates Marine BizTV for

organizing the inaugural International Conference on Non Destructive Testing –

NDT Level 4, to be held in October 10-11, 2010 at Dubai. As a Sponsoring

Organization for this event, AWS recognizes the critical importance of accurate

and skillfully conducted testing procedures to ensure the quality and fitness-for-

service of marine structures.

This important conference and its associated exposition are certain to attract NDT

experts from many nations to exchange ideas and experiences related to testing

in the field. Marine engineers, architects and others should benefit greatly from

conference papers covering NDT trends, practices, technologies, safety codes,

optical methods, personnel training and certification, and more.

As a major force in the international oil industry, the emirate of Dubai is an ideal

location for a summit on nondestructive testing technology. This global city and

business hub will draw a large audience of key personnel in the NDT field.

All the attendees at this prestigious event in Dubai are also invited to attend the

FABTECH exposition, including the AWS Welding Show, set for November 2-4,

2010, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. We hope you can join us in Atlanta to see the

latest in welding, testing and metal fabricating equipment.

In the meantime, AWS salutes the organizers of the International Conference on

Non Destructive Testing – NDT Level 4. We are most pleased to be a part of this

important event.

STRESS CORROSION CRACKING ASSESSMENT IN PIPELINE

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is generally considered to be the most complex of all

corrosion types. SCC is classified as a catastrophic form of corrosion, as the detection

of such fine cracks can be very difficult and the damage not easily predicted. It is very

difficult because we are looking for cracks at level of crystal grain size. In our region,

thousands kilometers long pipelines carry all kinds of fluids, anything from water to

crude oil. It is estimated that over 70% of pipelines are buried, and therefore they are

subjected to environmental abuse, external damage, coating delamination, soil

movements/instability, and attack by external stress corrosion cracking, it can also

be an environmental disaster when a petroleum or chemical carrying pipeline leaks

or bursts.

How operation safety of pipelines are secured? This question is normally raised

when the pipeline is put in operation and before leak can happen.

In this study, the detection and assessment of external stress corrosion cracking

attack in a buried cross-town pipeline using advanced NDT technology is addressed.

It is to avoid serious leak or rupture and to ensure reliability of the Pipeline.

The first stage inspection its done utilizing Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer

(EMAT) technology to scan the entire 50 Km long pipeline. It was a rapid inspection

to locate the affected spools and to record all the indications in the pipeline. The

EMAT results revealed many indications with a linear reflection and maybe caused

by crack anomaly.

The second stage investigation its done to verify the types of these indications and

to identify the severity like external stress corrosion cracking, surface colonies of

cracking, and through wall stress corrosion cracking utilizing Phased Array

Ultrasonic Technology. The type, depth and height of indications caused by this

corrosion damage can accurately be identified using this technology.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Technology also helps our assessment to differentiate

between surface and sub-surface cracks and lead to proper evaluations and

recommendations.

Finally, the study showed high correlations in inspection results of the EMAT &

Phased Array technologies, and are recommended to be implemented as

complementary methods to ensure safe operation of the pipelines for oil and

petrochemicals industries.

PHASED ARRAYS INSPECTION FOR CORROSION IN CRITICAL ENGINEERING

STRUCTURES

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing-PAUT has proven to be capable of solving

complicated corrosion inspection problems facing Oil/Gas, and Petrochemicals

industries.

The advancement in inspection technology of Phased Array comes from the

advancement of the software development implemented in steering and

manipulating the ultrasonic beam without moving the probe head of the system.

Due to this capability of the system, the operators are always finding new

applications for corrosion damage inspections.

The PAUT can easy replace the conventional UT for measuring metal wall thickness

due to corrosion damage. It takes minutes to map large areas for remaining wall

thickness using this technique compared to Conventional UT method, in addition to

the capability in storing the inspection data.

Another main advantage of PAUT is its ability to determine the length, orientation,

and position of cracks due to corrosion damages penetrating from surfaces deep

into the material.

Recently, PAUT had been utilized to examine the extent of damage on carbon steel

caused by Microbiologically Induced Corrosion. The root cause of this damage

mechanism is now well documented and normally results in pitting corrosion. This

type of damage is anticipated to exist, also, in stainless steel as long as there is

stagnant water and microorganisms.

It is expected that many corrosion inspection challenges can be met using PAUT. The

study is summarized into the following points:

Limitations of current NDT methods for corrosion inspection.

Capabilities of PA inspection technique in solving several inspection

challenges like locating corrosion at hidden surfaces of complex structure.

Further investigation, utilizing PAUT, is needed to examine the localized

crack propagation from the surface into the bulk materials, of stainless

steel, caused by Microbiological-Induced Corrosion.

CORROSION MONITORING INSTALLED SENSORS

Traditional corrosion monitoring options requiring thickness or automated

ultrasonic measurements are expensive due to the cost of gaining access to the pipe

for measurement, often requiring digging up the pipe, coating removal, sensor

placement, etc. GE inspection Technologies solution provides the ability to

continuously monitor corrosion at a fraction of the cost while providing frequent

and reliable information that significantly improves decision making.

GE's Rightrax LT & HT system is changing the way that critical erosion/corrosion data

is measured and managed. This breakthrough technology helps increase safety and

productivity while reducing overall inspection costs. GE inspection Technologies

system uses permanently installed sensors that permit remote monitoring of

restricted, hard-to-access and/or temperature areas up to 120°C (248°F) for LT & up

to 350°C (662°F) for FT. Once fitted, the system provides continuous real-time access

to corrosion data via direct & acquired wall thickness data, eliminating the need to

erect scaffolding, remove insulation or shut down plant systems. Online monitoring

also reduces labor-intensive traditional inspection routines by providing data that

can be used for proactive maintenance planning

TURNKEY PMI INSPECTION TECHNOLOGY USING HAND HELD X-RAY

FLUORESCENCE ALLOY ANALYZER

For over forty years Positive Material Identification (PMI) of alloys has been

performed using stand alone, portable, and more recently, hand-held x-ray

fluorescence (HH-XRF) spectrometers. These small but powerful alloy analyzers

have, over the years, contributed to the petrochemical industry's ability to verify

correct alloy grades in critical use applications. Today, given the record of serious

accidents and deaths in our industry, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health

Administration (OSHA) is conducting on site inspections to assure we are following

best practices in PMI testing. To complement this effort, Thermo Scientific NITON

has developed a new detector technology for handheld XRF (HXRF) using a large

area silicon drift detector. This new technology extends the limits of detection (LOD)

and the element range. The LOD's are now an order of magnitude better while the

element range now includes elements previously considered too light for HXRF

instruments that maintained a standard air path sample to detector configuration

(only possible with a helium purged or vacuum pumped system). Such elements

include Mg, Al, Si, P and S. This new technology opens up new PMI applications that

typically have been the forte of laboratory testing. Along with the new technology, a

new array of tools and training has been developed in conjunction with Analytical

Training Consultants (ATC) and American Petroleum Institute (API) -TPCP-0118

Certified Training Provider. These enhancements will extend the use of the analyzer

into previously too difficult testing conditions such as difficult to access locations,

hot pipes, small welds, data traceability, data encryption, photo documentation of

measured spot, and GPS location of tested spot. The addition of a PMI specific set of

Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) with a comprehensive Standard Operating

Procedure (SOP) to guide in the use of the system, and API certified PMI training

completes the total system. This complete turnkey system supplements traditional

good practices with a new “best practice” based on an all-inclusive total testing

needs approach. This paper will describe the latest advancements in HXRF

technology, plus the refinery specific testing tools and accessories that augment

and extend the reach of the HXRF technology.

EXPERIENCES OF AUDITING IN NDT

The reliable execution on any NDT inspection depends on control of many variables.

Starting from the preparation of a "WRITTEN PRACTICE" for the CERTIFICATION of

NDT personnel to the completing of the inspection report, all steps must be properly

planned and executed. During the planning and execution mistakes can occur and

hence, must be audited to detect and rectify them. In this paper, the common lapses

observed by the author during several audits are presented and a systematic

approach to Auditing is discussed.

PT EVALUATION OF INTERNAL WELD OVER LAY ON LONGER PIPE ( UP TO 2000 MM)

HAVING SMALLER DIAMETER (4" TO 12" NOMINAL BORE)

This paper describes the methodology used to evaluate weld overlay PT on longer

pipe and smaller bore through atomized process.

NDT has unique merits to locate discontinuity during fabrication of equipment.

Liquid penetrant testing is one of the economic and extensively used techniques to

locate surface flaws / discontinuity on ferrous and non-ferrous material or weld.

Principal:

Liquid penetrant inspection is a method that is used to reveal surface flaws by bleed

out of a colored or fluorescent dye from the flaw.

The technique is based on the ability of a liquid to be drawn into a "clean" surface

flaw by capillary action. After a period of time called the "dwell time" excess surface

penetrant is removed and a developer applied. This acts as a blotter. It draws the

penetrant from the flaw to reveal its presence. Liquid penetrant inspection (LPI)

offers over an unaided visual inspection is that it makes defects easy access to see for

the inspector.

Colored (contrast) penetrant require good white light.

INDUSTRIAL RADIATION SAFETY

Radiation is naturally present in our environment and has been since before the

birth of this planet. Radiation occurs in nature, but it can also be produced artificially

like x-rays in medical and Industrial applications of Gamma rays and or microwaves

for cooking.

Due to the ionization characteristic of Radiation, the hazards associated with

Radiations are a Public Hazard

Radiation can be either beneficial or harmful, depending on its use and control.

Therefore, regulation of certain radioactive sources is necessary so that people are

protected from unnecessary or excessive exposures.

REPLICA METALLOGRAPHY – A NDT TECHNIQUE FOR LIFE ASSESSMENT IN

INDUSTRIAL

Pressure parts in industrial applications such as boilers, gas turbines, petrochemical

plants and refineries experience various types of damage such as creep, fatigue, and

high/low temperature corrosion. The reliability, availability and efficiency of the

plant operation are very often based on condition assessment and remaining life

analysis. Among various methodologies of condition assessment, replica

metallography followed by evaluation in microscope has gained wide acceptance

since it is cost effective, quick and reliable.

The presentation shall cover the importance of replica metallography as a vital NDT

technique which can be used for life assessment in industrial applications. Details of

replica metallography technique, its application and importance for life assessment

along with different microstructures shall be presented.
