Emergency stop devices ES...AsperENISO13850theemergencystopfunctionisafunctionthatisintended to avert an impending hazard for personnel, damage to themachineorworkinprogress,ortoalleviateexistinghazards,andthatistobetriggeredbyasingleuseraction.

Forthispurposecontrolgearisrequiredthatisequippedwitharedpush-button,thatisthemushroom-headbuttoninred;thebuttonistohaveayellowbackground.Theemergencystopfunctionisgenerallyonlyallowedtoprovidesafetyinadditiontothedirectlyactingsafetyfunctions.Directlyactingsafetyfunctionsare,forexample,safetyswitchesonsafetydoorsthatcauseahazardtobeshutdownwithoutconsciousactionbytheuser.

EUCHNERemergencystopcontrolgearfeaturesveryinnovativetechnology.

AllcontrolsES-…havecontactblockmonitoringtocheckwhethertheswitchingelementsfittedareactuallyallcorrectlyseatedintheswitch.Iftheswitchingelementsshouldcomelooseunintentionally,anemergencystopcommandistriggeredautomatically.

ThecontrolsES-XN..haveaprotectivecollarthatmakesitpossibletofitapadlockwhenthemushroom-headbuttonispressed.Asaresultitisnotpossibletopullthecontrolbackout.Thismeasureisusedtoprovidepersonnelwhomustworkinthedangerareainsideamachinewithsimpleandeffectiveprotectionagainstinadvertentpowerupofthemachine.

TheresetmechanismontheEUCHNERemergencystopcontrolgearisverysophisticated.Themajorityofbuttonscanberesetbyeitherturn-ingorpulling.Andthisfeatureisnotanoption,butingeneralstandard.

Rope pull switchesInthefieldofsafetyengineering,ropepullswitchesbelongtothecat-egoryof“Emergencystopdeviceswithmechanicallatching”accordingtoENISO13850.Therequiredemergencystopfunctionmustbeavail-ableandfunctionalatalltimesirrespectiveoftheoperatingmode.Afteroperation of the actuating element, the emergency stop device mustautomaticallypreventorreducethehazardinthebestpossibleway.

Type examinationsTodemonstrateconformity,theMachineryDirectivealsoincludesthepos-sibilityoftypeexamination,forexample.Althoughallrelevantstandardsaretakenintoaccountduringdevelopment,wehavealloursafetyswitchessubjectedtoadditionaltypeexaminationsbyanotifiedbody.ManyoftheitemsofswitchgearlistedinthiscataloghavebeentestedbytheGermanSocialAccidentInsuranceassociation(DGUV),formerlytheemployers'liabilityinsuranceassociation(BG),andaregiveninthelistsfromtheDGUV.Furthermore,many itemsofswitchgearare listedby theUnderwritersLaboratories(UL)andtheCanadianStandardsAssociation(CSA).Theseswitchescanbeusedincountries inwhichthis listingisrequired.Theapprovalsymbolsontheindividualpagesofthecatalogindicatewhichbodytestedtheswitches.Withtheaidof theapprovalsymbols listedbelowyoucanquicklyseewhichapprovalsareavailablefortherelatedswitches:

Task of rope pull switchesThetriprangeismuchlargerthanforswitcheswithanemergencystoppushbutton,sinceoperationispossibleoverthewholeropelengthandisnotrestrictedtothesmallareawithinreachoftheswitch.Ropepullswitchesareusedwheneveritisnecessarytoprotectlargedan-gerareaswhereitisnotpossibleortoocomplextofitahousingorcover.

Theadvantageisthatareasofaninstallationormachinecanbeshutdownimmediatelyfromanypointintheworkingareaintheeventofdangerincaseswhereitwouldotherwisebenecessarytoinstallindividuallatchedemergencystopbuttonsatshortdistancesapart.

Function and technology used in rope pull switchesThestandardEN60947-5-5–6(requirementsforemergencystoppush-buttonsandropepullswitches)specifiescertainrequirementswhichmustbemetbyropepullswitchesandwhichthereforealsodefinethemodeofoperationofsuchswitches.Assuchthelatchingdevice(emergencystopswitch)mustberesetbyturningakey,byturningthepushbuttoninthestateddirectionorbypull-ing.Ropepullswitchesarenormallytrippedbypullingaplastic-sheathedsteelrope(knownasthesafetyropeorpullrope).Inaddition,EUCHNERropepullswitchesfeaturealatchedemergencystopbuttononthehousingwhichhasthesameeffect.Upontripping,thesafetycontactsareactuatedandastopsignalisgen-eratedwhichswitchesoffthemachine.Theverticaltensileforcewhichactsonthewireorropetogeneratetheemergencystopsignal(contactopening)mustbelessthan200Nandtheverticaldeflectionofthewireorropewhichisnecessaryforgenerationoftheemergencystopsignalmust be less than400mm.An emergency stop signalmust also begeneratedifthewireorropebreaksorbecomesdetached.Thismeansthatanyfaultinthesafetydeviceisnoticedimmediatelyandthesafetyfunctionisnotlostatanytime.

Temperature dependence

Whenplanningsafetyinstallationswithropepullswitches,itisnecessarytotakeintoaccountthetemperaturedependenceoftheinstallationandthesafetyropesothattheswitchisnottrippedasaresultofachangeintemperature.Todothis,thepossibleropelengthsmustbedeterminedandthetrippointmustbereadjustedregularly.Thefollowinggraphshowstherelationshipbetweenropelengthandtemperature.Installationshouldtakeplaceatatemperatureof20°C.
