Rewriting Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions

1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.

2. Add the numerator to the product.

3. Write this number as the numerator and keep the original denominator as the denominator of the improper fraction.

Example 1Write as an improper fraction.

Multiply the whole number by the 5(6) = 30denominator.

Add the numerator to the product. 1 + 30 = 31

Write the improper fraction as thetotal over the original denominator.

Precision Police• Is my work organized?• Does my work support my

answer?• Did I label my answer?• Did I circle or box my answer (if

applicable)?

RelayCoach and Mathlete Roles

Coach• Reads the

instructions and/or questions to partner

• Uses words to help your mathlete

• Don’t over-coach! Help only when needed.

• Be your mathlete’s precision police!

Mathlete• Is the keeper and

user of the equipment (pencil paper)

• Does all the writing

• Takes the card up to the scorer.

• Gives feedback to their coach on how they did

Relay• Working with a partner, determine who is

the Coach and who is the Mathlete for the first card. The Mathlete should have the writing utensil.

• Following your roles, complete the first card. When finished bring up the card to the scorer. • If you are correct (and followed Precision

Police guidelines), you will receive the next relay card. Hand off the card to your partner and switch roles.

• If you are incorrect, the scorer will give you a hint on what you did incorrectly. Return to your coach and continue to work. Bring up the card when ready.

Rewriting Improper Fractions as Mixed Numbers

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number in the mixed number.

2. Write the remainder as the numerator over the original denominator. This is the fraction in the mixed number.

Example 2Write as a mixed number.

Divide the numerator by thedenominator.

Write the mixed number with boththe whole number and the fraction.
