Dear Families and Friends Wow, what a great working bee we had last Saturday morning. The sun was shining as lots of mums, dads and kids assembled at 9:00am with tools at the ready! There was a huge amount of work completed in readiness for our big 135 Year Celebration coming up on Friday and our school is now looking………magnifico! Work included weeding, pruning, rubbish collection, blower vaccing, painting and pressure cleaning. A massive thank you to members of the O’Dwyer, Child, Macumber, Randle, Drew, Wilkinson, Paull, Scalora and Richards families who generously donated their time and expertise! 135 Year Celebration! Our Twilight Fair and Drive In Movie Night is on THIS FRIDAY! The Twilight Fair begins at 6:00pm followed by a special drive in movie event. The movie is 'Ferdinand' and it will be projected onto a big outdoor screen. This family friendly community event will be held on our school oval with spectacu-lar views towards the Great Dividing Range. There will be jumping castles, hot food, market stalls and more. We would love to see you there! Tickets are just $40.00 per family and can be booked easily via TryBooking. TryBooking will close tomorrow at 4pm but tickets for the movie will still be available at the gate. Our 135 Year celebration will also include a special assembly this Friday at 9:00am. Several ‘Gembrookians’ who attended our beautiful school many years ago will tell us a little bit about life at Gembrook Primary School back then. We are also asking students to come dressed in a historical ‘period’ costume and participate in a parade as part of assembly. Outstanding teaching and learning a priority at Gembrook Primary School Teachers and staff at Gembrook have a commitment to providing absolute excellence in teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy. An example of this was last Wednesday evening when our 2018 Literacy Leaders Mrs. Liston and Mrs. Drew launched the first of eight special professional learning sessions scheduled for this year on the topic of teaching writing. This professional learning series is in the form of a ‘study group’ based on the text ‘6+1 Traits of Writing’ by Ruth Culham. All teachers read a specific section of the text and complete a learning reflection journal prior to the

professional learning session. This leads to increased teacher skills, knowledge and efficacy. That it turn leads to improved student learning outcomes for our students. I can’t wait for our next study group session! Close The Gap Day Thursday 16th March National Close the Gap Day is an annual awareness event that aims to close the health and life expectancy gap between indigenous and non-indigenous communities in Australia. Close The Gap Day began in 2007 and was in response to the poor health outcomes among indigenous groups in Australia. Studies have shown that the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is 10-17 years lower than that of non-Indigenous Australians. The main aim of National Close the Gap Day is to make people from both indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds aware of this problem and work towards finding ways to solve it. Gembrook Primary School has registered for the Close The Gap Day and we are asking students to come to school dressed in either a yellow, black or red top. We have some special activities planned and we are seeking a gold coin donation which will be donated to Oxfam, the organisation that runs Close The Gap Day. Have a great week everyone and all the best

A Note from Mrs Drew

Collaboration: the action of working with someone to produce something. In every facet of life, collaboration is required. Everyday work envi-ronments, sports, friendships, relationships and in schools. Collabora-tion is a priority across the Victorian Curriculum and is at the forefront of teaching and learning at Gem-brook Primary School. As educators, we know that collaboration is the key requirement for 21st century employment and as parents it is reassuring to know that students are working towards these skills; Students working together to apply previously acquired knowledge Students cooperatively solving problems using previously acquired knowledge and skills Students working in groups that foster peer learning Over the last few weeks evidence of collaboration has been seen everywhere; parent information night, preparation for HPV, parents at the working bee, school council meetings, the bike ride, teachers planning together, and organisation for the 135 celebrations. Students, staff, parents and community all working together for a common objective; to continually improve Gembrook Primary School, whilst enjoying the journey! “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success!” Henry Ford Bye for now Kerri Drew Assistant Principal

This week the SLC have been learning about the importance of having a balanced reading diet. We discussed different genres and text types and added these to our new reading tubs!

Ciao, mi chiamo Signora Smith and I have the best job in the world! Teaching the children at Gembrook how to speak Italian. So far the children have been amazing and are excited to come to Italian class to see what they are learning each week. All of the children should be able to greet you in Italian and ask how you are. It’s amazing how receptive and welcoming the Gembrook School Community has been. In the coming weeks the chil-dren will learn phrases, colors, numbers, the alphabet, songs and so much more! I am super excited!! Fino alla prossima volta ( until next time) Ciao!!!! Signora Smith
