Competency-Based

Assessment with eLumen

eLumenis a SaaS platform that

empowers higher education

institutions to perform data

collection, management and

analytics around student learning

outcomes assessment.

We generate insights from outcomes

Page 3: eLumen Educause Presentation on Competency-Based Approaches

When a new client

conversation

starts with…

“Can you help us understand

patterns of student learning?”

“Can you help us do SLOs?”

We’re going to have a GREAT

conversation.

I know I have some work to do:

students are taking a back-seat to

binder-building. We get it: you HAVE

to do it, but let’s reframe this…

Page 4: eLumen Educause Presentation on Competency-Based Approaches

We know a bolder

vision is possible;

our foundations

are Competency-

Based

When you have to… we’ve made it

easy for you to comply with your

accreditation reporting requirements

(and program review)

When you want to… we enrich

your institution’s understanding

and/or use of student outcomes

data by enabling:

➔ Per-Student Assessment

➔ Remediation Strategies

➔ Cohort Tracking

➔ Competency-Based

Approaches

Who does

this…?We have a

variety of schools

— but mostly

VERY BIG

Community

Colleges.

Page 6: eLumen Educause Presentation on Competency-Based Approaches

We think community colleges will

be big innovators in competency-

based education.

And we think their needs will transform the power of

outcomes assessment in higher education.

Page 7: eLumen Educause Presentation on Competency-Based Approaches

So: How can We “Do SLOs” Better?

Start with: Accreditation and Program Review.

But then let’s think about possibilities for:

• Co-Remediation

• Retention Risk Management

• Completion with Job-Ready Skills

• Equity Strategies & Reporting

• Articulation and Transfer

Let’s go on an Outcomes Journey…

Problem Co-Remediat ion

Screening for basic

skills can work—but

can sometimes screen

out students who

would better benefit

from Co-Remediation.

Adopting Competency-Based

assessments into curriculum

allows you to do early formative

assessments of core skills such

as writ ing and math while also

engaging students in the skills

development they’ll need in

their program.

With eLumen’s ability to score

individual students, map

skills from course to program-

and Gen Ed outcomes, as well

as track Demographics, you

can send one set of remedial

students to the Writ ing Center

and another to ESL Mentoring.

-

-

Problem Retent ion

Specific skills can be

a challenge over t ime,

even if a student is

progressing through

their program.

Competency-Based offerings

allow you to build alternative

offerings that address specific

skills-gaps or skills-emphases.

eLumen allows you to define

alternative assessment strategies,

as well as track both individuals

and cohorts over t ime. This

combination of variable strategic

initat ive and invidual student-

tracking can change what the

game for assessment. -

Problem Skills-Ready

Students—and their

future employers—

want to know that

they are leaving your

inst itut ion “ skills-

ready.” Are they?

-

Accreditor demands,

Program Review, and other

academic process supports

are reasons enough to do

some form of outcomes

modeling and assessment.

But the real reason—the

reason eLumen was formed

as a company—is that by

paying attention to student

skills, by designing courses

and programs to deliver

those skills, we do better by

our students, enabling them

to live the lives they have

imagined.

“So… How do you make that

possible?”

A New Conversation About Learning OutcomesLet’s Imagine…

Accreditation and

are first-order

Skills-Readiness

become POSSIBLE

Faculty can engage

with tools they own,

on THEIR terms.

eLumen can make that possible—while meeting you where you are today.
