GeneralInformation

GradeExaminationsandPerformanceLevelAssessments PLAs in ElectronicKeyboard

1 PrescribedRepertoire

1.1 Theprescribedrepertoirelistsforeachgradeappearfrompage12inthispublication.AllElectronicKeyboardpiecesforallgrades/levelsmustbechosenfromtheselists.

1.2 Candidatesmustperformabalancedprogrammewhichshouldbediverseincharacterandtempo.

1.3 AnElectronicKeyboardExaminationAlbumforGrade1toGrade5examinationsispublishedbyUnisa.ThisalbummaybeordereddirectlyfromUnisabyusingtheofficialorderform.Thisalbummayalsobepurchasedfromvarioussheetmusicdealers.Undernocircumstanceswillcandidatesbeallowedtousephotocopiesoftheofficialexaminationalbumsintheexaminationroom,withtheexceptionofoneortwopagestofacilitatepage‐turning.

1.4 PrescribedmusicnotpublishedinUnisaalbumsisnotstockedorsoldbyUnisa.Candidatesareexpectedtobuytherequiredsheetmusicfromsheetmusicdealersorviatheinternet,andtousetheoriginalprintedmusicintheexaminationroom.Copiesofalltheseworksmustbesubmittedtotheexaminerattheexaminationandwillbedestroyedafterwards.

1.5 Candidatesmusttakecognisanceofthefactthatphotocopyingofmusic,withoutwrittenpermissionfromthepublishers,isstrictlyprohibitedbytheCopyrightAct Act98of1978,asamended .Examinersmayrefusetoconducttheexaminationiftheoriginalworksarenotpresentintheexaminationroom.InsuchcasestheexaminationwillbedowngradedtoanEvaluation.

1.6 Examinersmaylistentoeitheranentireworkoronlypartofit.Repeats II: :II neednotbeplayedunlessrequestedbytheexaminer,indicatedascompulsoryinthesheetmusicorifthesectionisrepeatedinornamentedform.DaCaposectionsshould,however,beperformedunlesstheexaminerrequeststhecandidatenottodoso.

1.7 Candidatesmayuseanyeditionoftheprescribedworks.1.8 Itisnotessentialtofollowperformanceindicationssuchasarticulation,dynamics,

phrasing,pedalling,metronomeindications,etc,appearinginaspecificeditionunlesstheyhaveobviouslybeeninsertedbythecomposerandnotbytheeditor.Whencandidatesuseaneditionwithdifferentediting,theyshouldbringthistotheexaminer'sattention.

1.9 WorksbySouthAfricancomposersaremarkedwithanasterisk * intherepertoirelists.

2 AlternativeandOwnChoiceWorks

2.1 Candidatesmaynotmakeuseofanyownchoiceworks.

2.2 AlternativeworksfromtheJazzPianoSyllabusareindicatedinthissyllabusandpermissiontousethesealternativeworksneednotbeobtained.

3 Specificrequirements

3.1 Pageturners: NopageturnersareallowedintheexaminationvenueforuptoandincludingGrade7

examinations.Grade8candidatesmaymakeuseofapageturnerwithoutpriorpermissionfromtheUniversity.Thispersonmaynotbethecandidate'steacherortheexaminer.

3.2 Equipment3.2.1 Acandidatemustbringhis/herownkeyboardandextensionchordtotheexamination

room.3.2.2 Thekeyboardmusthaveaminimumof4octaves,withfull‐sizedkeys.A5‐octavekeyboard

isrecommended. Gr1–5 .ForGr6–8thekeyboardmusthaveaminimumof7octaves,withfull‐sizedkeys.An8‐octavekeyboardisrecommended.

3.2.3 Thekeyboardshouldhaveinternalspeakers.Atcentreswherethereareanumberofkeyboardcandidates,externalspeakersmaybeused,providedtheyaresetupbeforethebeginningoftheexaminationsessionandareleftinplaceuntiltheendofthesession.AtGrade6–8levelamplificationofkeyboardsareallowed,andstereoeffectscouldenhanceperformance.

3.2.4 Theinstrumentmustcontainarangeofvoicesandbepolyphonic,withaminimumof16‐notepolyphoniccapacity.

3.2.5 Candidatesshoulduseaninstrumentincorporatingfeaturesappropriatetotherepertoirebeingperformed,e.g.touchresponse,sustainandexpression/volumepedals,registrationmemories,introsandplayoffs,fill‐ins,etc.

3.2.6 CandidatesplayingGr6–8areallowedtousemorethanonekeyboard/electronicpiano/synthesizerinthepracticalexamination.

3.3 Settingupofequipment3.3.1 Examinerswillnotassistwiththesettingup includingregistration oftheinstrument.3.3.2 Efficientsettingupisamajorpartoftheperformanceskillandisexpectedtobecarriedout

quicklyandfluentlyatalllevels.3.4 Single‐fingered/Fingeredchords3.4.1 Theuseofchordsgeneratedfromasinglenote “singlefingeredchords” isnotpermitted.3.4.2 FullfingeredchordshavetobeusedfromLevel1.3.5 Pedals SustainingandExpression 3.5.1 SustainingpedalsmustbeusedfromLevel2onwards.Expressionpedalscanbeusedfrom

anyLevel.

3.6 Backingtracks/Midifiles3.6.1 TheuseofcommerciallyavailableMIDIfilesisnotacceptedunderanycircumstances.3.6.2 ForListApiecestheuseofdisks,flashmemoryetc.isstrictlylimitedtothepurposeof

registrationsettingonly.Nopre‐recordedmaterialmaybeused.3.6.3 ForListBandCpieces,candidatesmaymakefulluseofavailabletechnology,including

sequencing multi‐tracking ,drumandaccompanimentprogramming,andperformancemulti pads.

3.7 PrescribedStylesandVoices3.7.1 Instrumentsvaryandthereforethevoicesandstylesarevaried.Ifacandidatefeelsthatthe

specifiedvoicesandstylesarenotappropriateonhis/herinstrument, s hemayuseanymusicallyacceptablealternative,aslongasthischangedoesnotsubstantiallyalterthecharacterofthepiece.

3.8 AutoIntros/Endings3.8.1 Pre‐setandoriginallycomposedautointrosandplay‐offs,regardedasanintegralpartof

theperformance,shouldbeemployed,butmustevidentlybetheworkofthecandidate.Candidatesareencouragedtoimproviseorplayalongwiththeseintrosandplay‐offsinordertoremainactivelyinvolvedforthedurationthereof.

3.8.2 Thelengthoftheintrosandendingsshouldcorrespondwiththelengthofthepiece,andshouldneverexceedfourbarsinlength.

3.9 Registration3.9.1 Registrationchangesareexpected,particularlywherethereisasecondchorusorverse.3.9.2   Registration changes should not hold up the pulse and the flow of the music and may be pre‐

programmed.   

4 Technicalwork

4.1 Alltechnicalworkmustbeplayed: frommemory ascendinganddescendingaccordingtothespecifiedrange

4.2 Anypracticalandsystematicfingeringwhichproducesagoodresultwillbeaccepted.4.3 Thefollowingabbreviationswillbeusedtodistinguishbetweenthehands: LH lefthand RH righthand.4.4 The compass of theprescribed scales is indicatedwithRomannumeralswhich are tobe

interpretedasfollows: I oneoctave II twooctaves III threeoctaves IV fouroctaves.

5 Sight‐reading

Candidatesmust play one sight‐reading test. Sufficient timewill be allowed to study the piecewithout playing it. In preparation to play the sight‐reading test, candidateswill be permitted tosilentlyfingerthenoteswithoutmakingasound.

6 PracticalMusicianship

6.1 The requirements for each grade appear in a separate publication, available from theDirectorateMusic,freeofcharge.

6.2 Thepracticalmusicianshiprequirementspergradearethesameforallinstruments.6.3 Theexaminerwillplayallpracticalmusicianshiptestsonthepiano.6.4 ThecandidatemustplaythevisualisationtestontheElectronicKeyboard.

7 TheoryofMusicrequirementsandprerequisites

7.1 TherearenotheoreticalrequirementsforPerformanceLevelAssessments PLAs .

7.2 The Theory of Music examinations required for the various grade examinations are asfollows:

7.3 If a Theory of Music examination is a requirement for a practical examination, and the

candidate has not passed the required Theory ofMusic examination before the practicalexamination is played, the candidatemust enter and pass the required Theory of Musicexaminationbythesecondsessionofthefollowingyear. 

7.3.1 Acandidatewhopassesthepracticalexaminationduringthefirstexaminationsessionbutpasses the required Theory of Music examination only in the second or any laterexamination session will only receive the certificate once the relevant Theory of Musicexaminationhasbeenpassed.

7.3.2 IfacandidatepassedtherequiredTheoryofMusicexaminationat thesameoranearlierexaminationsession,thepracticalcertificatewillbeissuedwithoutdelay.

7.3.3 IfacandidateonlymeetstheTheoryofMusicrequirementbytheendofthefollowingyear,theDirectorateMusicmustbecontactedandrequestedtoissuethepracticalcertificate.

7.3.4 IfacandidatedoesnotmeettheTheoryofMusicrequirementbytheendofthefollowingyear,thecandidatemustre‐enterforthepracticalexaminationandplayagain.

7.4 Grade8practicalcandidateswhodonotyetmeet theTheoryofMusicrequirementmust

register for the practical and theory components in the same calendar year. Theory ofMusic may be written earlier. Both Grade 6 Theory of Music papers must have beenpassedbytheendofthefollowingyear.

7.5 TheoryofMusicGrades6and7examinationsconsistoftwopaperseach.Candidatesmay

enterforoneorbothpapers inanyorder atanytime.7.5.1 TheoryofMusicGrades6and7candidateswillretaincreditforindividualpaperspassed.

7.6 For all practical licentiates, a Grade 7 Theory of Music qualification is a prerequisite.Thereforebothpapersmusthavebeenpassedbeforeentering for thepractical licentiateexamination. 

7.6.1 CandidatesenteringfortheGrade7TheoryofMusicwillhavetopassboththeexaminationpapersinorderfortheTheoryofMusicqualificationtobeawarded.

7.6.2 Grade7TheoryofMusicexaminationsarepresentedinthesecondsessionofeachyearonly.

7.7 PleasedonotcontactUnisatoenquireaboutcertificatesifthecandidatehasnotyetpassed

therequiredTheoryofMusicexamination.

8 Exemptions

Prospective Practical candidates may request for exemption according to the followingprinciples:

8.1 BMusdegreesobtainedfromSouthAfricanUniversities8.1.1 TheoryofMusicGrade6 Acompleted firstyearofaBMusdegreeataSouthAfricanUniversity secondyear if the

BMusincludesbridging/extendeddegreeprogrammes .8.1.2 TheoryofMusicGrade7 AcompletedsecondyearofaBMusdegreeataSouthAfricanUniversity thirdyearifthe

BMusincludesbridging/extendeddegreeprogrammes .8.1.3 PracticalGrade8 AcompletedfirstyearofthefirstinstrumentofaBMusdegreeataSouthAfricanUniversity

secondyeariftheBMusincludesbridging/extendeddegreeprogrammes 8.2 NationalandInternationalMusicQualifications Candidates in possession of other national and international qualificationsmay apply for

exemption. Qualifications/syllabi concerned will be evaluated by the Directorate MusicregardingTheoryofMusicGrade6and7andPracticalGrade8.

8.3 Applicationprocedure Please use the official Request for Exemption form, obtainable from the internet or the

DirectorateMusic.Acertifiedcopyofthecandidate’sacademicrecordmustaccompanytheapplication.

8shouldnotbemorethan20yearsofageon31OctoberofthecompetitionyearandmusthavepassedtherequiredGrade6TheoryofMusicexaminationbythefirstsessionofthatparticular year. Candidateswho onlywrite the required Theory ofMusic Grade 6 in thesecondsessionoftherelevantyearwillnotbeeligibleforparticipationsincetheresultswillnotyetbeavailableatthetimeofthecompetition.

10.2 Requirementsforparticipation The following requirements must be fulfilled in order to qualify for participation in the

scholarshipcompetitions:10.2.1 Markallocation

Grade8 achieveatleast85%intheexaminationasawhole achieveanaverageofatleast85%fortheprescribedpieces.

3 Evaluations 3.1 The purpose of an evaluation is to encourage inadequately prepared candidates to play,

ratherthanwithdrawfromagradeexaminationorPerformanceLevelAssessment.3.2 Candidatesmay change from a grade examination or Performance Level Assessment to an

evaluation. Thismaybedoneupto thedayof theexamination,butexcess feeswillnotberefunded.PleasenotethatcandidatescannotenterforanEvaluationspecifically.

3.3 Any combination ofworkmay be presented for an Evaluation andmay include any of the

threepieces,sight‐reading,technicalworkorpracticalmusicianship.3.4 Nomarksorsymbolsareawarded,onlycommentary.3.5 Nocertificateorspecialreportisissued. Theexaminerreportservesasconfirmationofthe

evaluation.3.6 Oneteacherorparentmaybepresentattheevaluation.

4 Allocationofmarks
