42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

AWE: to be gloriously overwhelmed at the goodness, greatness, and mercy of the triune God ultimately expressed in the cross of Christ.

This awe is nourished or fed by being devoted to the APOSTOLIC DOCTRINE, fellowship, worship, and prayer.

“To be happy, without superintendence, belongs to God only.” Augustine, Confessions, Book 4

“If God sits astride it [the horse metaphorically represented in the life of an individual], then as a moderate and skilled rider he guides it properly, spurs it if it is too slow, checks it if it is too swift, restrains it if it is too rough or too wild, subdues it if it balks and leads it in the right path. But if the devil saddles it, he violently drives it from the trail like a foolish and wanton rider, forces it into ditches, tumbles it over cliffs and goads it into obstinacy and fierceness.” John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, 2-4-11

Devotion to the apostolic teaching/scripture:

1. Produces a life of love.“The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” 1 Timothy 1:5

2. Allows the believer to fight the good fight of the faith.“This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare.” 1 Timothy 1:18

3. To be nourished in the scripture leads to good teaching (beautiful, handsome, useful, advantageous, beneficial)…

“6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.” 1 Timothy 4:6

…and sound theology. “3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness.” 1 Timothy 6:3

“13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 1:13

“9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.” Titus 1:9

4. Discipline aims to PROTECT. Just as cancer spreads from one cell to another, so sin quickly spreads from one person to another. (v. 6)

5. Discipline aims to PRESENT A GOOD WITNESS for Jesus.
