2. System Overview

The system is composed of the following macro-blocks:

1. Transmitter

o Control Unit TCU

o Transmitting RF Head MT

2. Receiver

o Receiving RF Head MR

o Control Unit RCU

Page 8: Elber Usermanuals Stl Systems - Mt-mr-(Spm-series) [en]

2.1. Transmitter

The transmitting section is composed of two units:

- An outdoor unit, the RF Head, which lies in a waterproof box

comprehending all the IF/RF conversion circuits, the control from the

IDU and the management of the signals.

- An indoor control unit in a rack standard 19” with the power supply,

the user interface and the remote control interface.

2.1.1. Transmitting RF Head Control Unit TCU

This indoor unit is appointed to feed, over a single output line, the DC Supply

(48 V dc), the data subcarrier for the programming of the Head, and the 70

MHz IF signal to the external RF Head.

Figure 2-TCU

As can be easily noted from the block diagram of Figure 1, the transmitting

head control unit is composed of the following boards:

1. POWER SUPPLY

2. MICROCONTROLLER

3. KEYPAD

4. TX CONTROL UNIT

5. MOTHERBOARD

Details and related electric schemes will be presented in the following

paragraphs.

Page 11: Elber Usermanuals Stl Systems - Mt-mr-(Spm-series) [en]

2.1.1.1. Power Supply

The TCU Power supply can be:

AC 230 V +/-20% 50Hz

115 V +/-10% 60Hz

DC 22 ÷ 65 V positive to ground

Fuse installed on AC input is 1.6 A.

An automatic switch between the two sources is present: in case of AC supply

decreasing under threshold, input voltage is switched on DC input. The switch

is instantaneous without interruptions in the equipment normal functioning.

DC input connector is a 4 pin; the supply cable must be connected to pin 2 and

4 independently of the polarity.

The DC input is galvanically isolated from the equipment ground.

2.1.1.4. Tx Control Unit

The board provides for the mixing over a single output line (on a SMB

connector connected to the LEMO connector located in the back panel) of DC

supply (48 V dc), data subcarrier and 70 MHz IF signal.

Changing the jumper placement on connectors J18 and J19, the DC supply

polarity can be changed.

2.1.1.5. Mother Board

This board consists of a big plate prearranged to lodge up to four same-size

standard boards and two of reduced format, or two standard format boards

and six of the reduced one.

Moreover it lodges the microcontroller, the power supply board and the

transformer

Its presence limits the cabling, otherwise very complex, and makes the

equipment ready to future upgrades.

2.1.2. Transmitting RF Head MT

The external RF head receives, on a single input line, from the control unit, a

signal which is the sum of DC supply, data subcarrier and IF signal and

provides for the separation of the three components.

The main task of the equipment is to perform the IF/RF conversion.

Figure 4 TX Head

As results from the block diagram of Figure 1, the transmitting head is

composed of 5 boards:

1. SUPPLY

2. SECOND IF UP-CONVERTING MIXER

3. MULTIPLIER AND RF MIXER

4. LOCAL OSCILLATORS

5. POWER AMPLIFIER

Page 25: Elber Usermanuals Stl Systems - Mt-mr-(Spm-series) [en]

Details and related electric schemes will be presented in the following

paragraphs.

2.1.2.1. Supply

This boards provides for the separations of the three signals which make part

of the multiplex transported over the RG-216 cable coming from the control

unit: the data subcarrier is sent to the local oscillators boards, where the

controller of the head is installed; the 70 MHz IF signal is provided at the input

of the first converter (Second If Up converting Mixer); the 48V DC supply is

utilized to generate all the voltages necessary for the functioning of the boards

composing the head.

Page 27: Elber Usermanuals Stl Systems - Mt-mr-(Spm-series) [en]

2.1.2.2. Second If Up-converting Mixer

The 70 MHz IF signal present at the input, before the up-conversion to the

1100 MHz frequency of the second IF, is filtered by a band-pass filter 30 MHz

wide.

This filtering is useful to remove from the Tx output spectrum the noise,

coming from an analogue receiver, or spurious frequencies, coming from a

digital modulator, eventually present in the IF input signal.

The image frequency (having a 140 MHz offset from 1100 MHz) is filtered by a

ceramic resonators filter (7 cells).

In the same functional block is also installed a variable gain amplifier,

controlled by the power detector, having the function of maintaining the output

power at the selected value (ALC function).

2.1.2.3. Multiplier and RF mixer

This board converts the signal coming from the first up-converter to the final

frequency of the transmitter. The conversion function is performed by a wide-

band diode passive mixer.

On the output line of the mixer is inserted a band-stop filter in order to

attenuate the image frequency, located at a 2200 MHz distance from the

central frequency of the link.

The final value of the frequency is obtained applying to the oscillator signal

three wideband duplication stages in cascade.

The level necessary to correctly pilot the mixer is obtained inserting some

amplification stages with GaAsFet amplifiers.

Multiplier and mixer are installed in appropriate RF cavity.

2.1.2.4. Local Oscillators

This board lodges a microcontroller which provides for the communication with

the control unit and for the monitoring of the different boards.

Moreover, two local oscillators for the first and the second conversion are

located in opportune cavity.

The first conversion local oscillator is composed of an L band synthesizer; the

PLL (Phase Locked Loop) controls the frequency of a low phase noise VCO.

The frequency is fixed and its value (1170MHz/1030MHz) is programmed by

the controller during the start-up of the system through an SPI.

The oscillator is cyclically interrogated to monitor the lock state.

The second conversion local oscillator utilizes a synthesizer very similar to the

one used in the other oscillator, using a high stability TCXO as reference. In

this case the PLL controls a DRO VCO with low phase noise.

The same serial bus let the controller to set the frequency and to control

periodically the loop lock state.

2.2.1.4. Rx Control Unit

This board provides for the mixing over a single output line (on a SMB

connector connected to the LEMO connector located in the back panel) of DC

supply (48 V dc) and data subcarrier.

On the same link it receives the 70 MHz IF signal from the receiving RF Head.

A 70 MHz filter followed by an equalizer eliminates any interference which can

affect the IF signal received.

Moreover, a second equalization network compensates for the losses and

distortions introduced by the cable; three different networks are provided,

tuned on a 10, 100 and 200 m length of the cable.

The right equalization network can be selected by keypad and display.

2.2.2. Receiving RF Head MR

The external RF head receives, on a single input line, from the control unit, a

signal which is the sum of DC supply and data subcarrier; moreover, it sums

the IF received signal to the previous ones, in order to provide it to the control

unit.

Figure 7 Rx Head

As results from the block diagram of Figure 5, the receiving head is composed

of 5 boards:

1. SUPPLY

2. FIRST IF DOWN-CONVERTING MIXER

3. MULTIPLIER AND RF MIXER

Page 49: Elber Usermanuals Stl Systems - Mt-mr-(Spm-series) [en]

4. LOCAL OSCILLATORS

5. IF AMPLIFIER

Details and related electric schemes will be presented in the following

paragraphs.

2.2.2.1. Supply

This boards provides for the separations of the three signals which make part

of the multiplex transported over the RG-216 cable coming from the control

unit: the data subcarrier is sent to the local oscillators boards, where the

controller of the head is installed; the 70 MHz IF signal received from the First

If Down-Converting Mixer is sent to the control unit; the 48V DC supply is

utilized to generate all the voltages necessary for the functioning of the boards

composing the head.

2.2.2.2. Multiplier and RF mixer

This board converts the signal coming from the antenna to the first IF (1100

MHz). The conversion function is performed by a wide-band diode passive

mixer.

On the output line of the mixer is inserted a band-stop filter in order to

attenuate the image frequency, located at a 2200 MHz distance from the

central frequency of the link.

The local oscillator is first of all multiplied in the multiplier cavity by three

duplication stage and then used for the down-conversion process.

Multiplier and mixer are installed in opportune RF cavity.

2.2.2.3. First If Down-Converting Mixer

The first conversion output signal (1100 MHz), before being converted to the

second IF (70 MHz), is amplified and filtered in order to remove the image

frequency (140 MHz offset) through a 7 cells dielectric resonator filter of the

same type of that one installed on the first up-converter of the transmitter.

The 70 MHz passes successively through a fixed gain amplifier, a phase

equalizer and a 70 MHz band-pass filter.
