PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through this term and that Christmas is just around the corner! With the intense activity at the end of the year, we are sometimes more likely to be sensitive or emotional as we are run down and in need of a holiday. At our staff meeting this week we discussed the importance of recognising the stress of Term 4 and being conscious of how we choose to respond to challenges of the end of the year.

Stephen MR Covey talks about when successful marathon runners ‘hit the wall’ they lift up their head and pick up the pace. This is a vital mindset for us all at the end of the year; by picking up the pace we determine that we are not only going to finish, but finish strong. At EHPS we plan to finish the year strong, celebrating the success of our students, staff and community.

Playground ClearanceDuring the week I received the clearance certificate from NSW Public Works, stating that the playground has been cleared of any asbestos particles and that air monitoring conducted returned a nil response. They advised the playground was safe for students and the area has been re-opened. We will continue to monitor the area affected.

Class Parent Meeting – Wednesday 15 NovemberA reminder that we will be holding a special Class Parent meeting next week in the staffroom at 9:15am. Please RSVP to Cherie if you will be joining us. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Parenting ProgramI would like to make you aware of a free Parenting Program being run at Barrenjoey HS on 22 November, commencing at 7pm. Gitta Laub, a Child and Adolescent Parenting Educator at Northern Sydney Local Health District is running the one-night program, which is a compacted version of the Positive Parenting Program.

Parenting is one of the most difficult and important jobs we do and at times we could all benefit from advice on how to parent better through learning how to develop positive family relationships. Gitta proposes a formula on how to do it which has been well received and effective. Please see the flyer attached to this newsletter if you are interested in this free event offer. Bookings are essential.

Year 6 Fun DayCongratulations to our wonderful Year 6 students for their organisation of the annual Year 6 Fun Day on Wednesday. The school was a hive of fabulous food, fun and frivolity as students enjoyed the many treats, games and stalls that our Year 6 students prepared. This was Year 6s main fundraiser which contributes to their Year 6 gift to the school at the end of the year. We thank our community for supporting them in their fundraising efforts.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Maths Challenge CampOn Monday and Tuesday of this week, Year 5 students from Elanora Heights PS, combined with students from the other schools attended Elanora Conference Centre for the annual Maths Challenge Camp, run by our very own maths expert, Mrs Laurinda Lomas along with Mrs Laila Connery. Students participated in two days of mind-stretching mathematics and friendship as they worked collaboratively to solve a variety of challenges. My thanks to Mrs Lomas for coordinating this excellent opportunity for students across our network – your passion is very much appreciated.

School Spectacular ChoirCongratulations to Mrs Jennifer Power and our senior choir students who have successfully auditioned for the Schools Spectacular Arena Performance to be held at Qudos Bank Arena on November 24 and 25. This is the first time students from Elanora Heights will perform in this world class spectacular and we wish them all the best as they proceed through their rehearsal schedule over the coming weeks. Our very own Mr Jack Tier has also been selected as part of the stage management team for the event, another outstanding achievement for one of our staff – well done, Jack!

Students from our P&C Band Program will be attending the matinee of the show to cheer on their Elanora classmates, another wonderful and inspiring opportunity for our students. Thank you to Mrs Laura van der Straaten for coordinating this event.

Selective High School Applications for 2019 – applications due now!A final reminder for all students in Year 5 wishing to apply for Selective High School in 2019 that the online application process closes on Monday 13 November. Please ensure you have completed your applications by the closing date as no late entries will be received.

Please Keep Our Children SafeThis week we were devastated by the tragedy which occurred at Banksia St Public School. As parents and educators, we can only imagine the terrible shock and loss being felt by their community and send those affected our deepest condolences and prayers.

It is a timely reminder for us all to review our safety practices, particularly in our carpark. Our staff carpark is for staff only. I ask you to please drop your children at the top of the track or park your car to escort them into the school on foot so that we may avoid a similar tragedy at our school. We also need to ensure that pedestrians walk on the pathways provided, and remind our students to never walk across the carpark area. It would be helpful if parents could model this behaviour when walking with their children.

I thank you for helping to keep our students safe by parking off site and walking your children into school.

Enjoy your weekend,

S... MATHS CHALLENGE CAMP

More than 70 Year 5 students from across PCS, the NBLA and Warringah region got together for 2 days at the picturesque Elanora Uniting Conference Centre for this year’s Maths Challenge Camp. Among these students were our very own Kate H, Oscar L, Charlee E and Lachlan S.

All the students worked towards two goals - making a new friend and thinking like a mathematician. Both goals were achieved with a lot of team work, problem solving and acceptance of a challenge.

Each activity was inspired by famous mathematicians like Escher, Fibonacci, Plato and Pascal. Students were asked to work like a mathematician by:

•Defining the problem•Experimenting•Collecting and Organising Data•Looking for Patterns•Hypothesising and Testing•Reflecting

In between activities they played soccer, cricket, handball and with hula hoops. It was fun!

Mrs Connery (1 Yellow) and I both taught at the camp; we would like to thank our students for their enthusiastic efforts - it was such a pleasure to see them working hard and having fun at the same time.

We had a lot of fun too!!

... 3-6 LIFE SKILLS - FOCUS FOR THE WEEKYrs 3 and 4 - Week 5 - Mindful Thoughts and Resilience and Perseverance

Our “Mindfulness in Action” class plan teaches students about mindful thoughts. Sometimes it is difficult to focus and we find that our thoughts can worry us, if they are drifting into the past or the future. Sometimes we just become preoccupied with something else other than the task at hand. Mindful thoughts and anchor words are a precursor to training our brains. Mindful thoughts help us to re-focus and keep us in the present moment. Students were able to feel this experience by sitting and being guided through these activities by the Life Skills teacher.

Students held their movements longer this week and were reminded that even if a movement feels challenging, determination will help us to develop perseverance and resilience. Of course, all students took on the challenge like rock stars and did not give up on themselves. In the end, the students saw their perseverance increase. During the games students were asked how they could continue to persevere independently while they cooperated in a team. A few of the brilliant ideas they mentioned were to think positively and focus on the movements of the body.

Yrs 5 and 6 - Week 5 - Positive Self-Talk and Resilience, PerseveranceThis week in Tools for Transition, students practised positive self-talk and learnt how to recognise and reframe negative self-talk. Life Skills Group believes that students should have a strong understanding of how our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs influence our feelings, emotions and behaviour. In this lesson, students were taught that through positive thinking we can alter negative self-talk. Managing our self-talk is actually a life skill that we need to learn and practise. Just like learning a new maths skill or sports skill, managing our self-talk takes time and effort.

Mindfulness is a practice that is strongly linked to positive self-talk and positive feelings towards the self and others and in this week’s mindfulness practice students learnt a simple strategy to build their positive self-talk skills. Students then had the chance to describe how positive thinking assists in developing and maintaining positive relationships. Through various games and exercises this week, students put their positive thinking into practise and used their self-talk to reach a common goal. It is truly amazing to see students learning to be responsible for their own positive thinking and how much their resilience, perseverance and dedication towards a task can build when they do!

..... Our fundraising team is hard at work again this term, looking for new ways to raise

money for our planned playground upgrade. This term the team is putting together postcard and greeting card bundles that will feature our new school mural. The mural is located at the back of the school hall and was completed by the very talented artist, Robin Martin. The cards will be available for purchase before Christmas, so please consider waiting a few weeks to get your very unique Elanora cards which I’m sure will be a hit amongst family and friends. The cards will have a blank message, so any leftovers can be used for a variety of occasions in the future.

The fundraising team is also looking for sponsors for the rotary car raffle that kicks off in Term One, 2018. Your business will be featured on the front of EHPS raffle ticket books, which are sent out to every family in the school. Your business will also feature on our promotional posters and in the school newsletter. Sponsorship allows the P&C to award prizes to the top raffle ticket sellers. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Ro Brazel at [email protected] or 0414 818 364.

As the year draws to a close and social activities dominate many people’s calendars, it is always hard to get a full roster of canteen volunteers. Ironically, this is a time when many people do canteen lunch orders because of this busyness. We need your help! If you can volunteer for a day or even an hour or two, or know of a family member that would love to help us out and serve the sea of smiling faces, please contact Ingrid.

Summer favourite – frozen chocolate milk pops! These EVERYDAY menu items are only $1. Our in-store made frozen pops also come in blended fruit and coconut water flavours and banana smoothie flavour. A taste to suit everyone on these warm summer days!
