Until next time,

Leesa Martin

Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,What a lovely second week I had at Elanora Heights Public School, spending more time with our students in their classrooms and at assemblies, meeting our dedicated music committee parents and working with the teachers as they participated in a professional development workshop on Inquiry Based Learning.

If that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, I was also delighted to visit the Elanora Dads’ Camp Out on Saturday afternoon and even grabbed some brownies from the cake stall at Bunnings on Sunday morning. It is lovely to be part of such a cohesive school community, working together to provide wonderful experiences for our students.

My thanks to the many parents who coordinated the camp-out on Saturday evening and Sunday morning – especially to the mums who came in to cook breakfast! – and to the Music Committee

parents who not only manned the BBQ at Bunnings on Sunday, but also baked so many delicious treats to sell.

Youth Eco SummitLast Wednesday, Miss Chloe Powell accompanied four of our Elanora students, (Kate

H, Natalie P, Ben M and Lachie S) to the Youth Eco Summit, along with other students from the Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS). The Youth Eco Summit is an annual curriculum-based festival that provides students with hands on workshops and interactive displays based around the theme of sustainability. The aim of the festival is to allow students to present their current achievements in sustainability, and inspire ongoing action for change. Our students participated in activities such as worm farm building, mud brick making and traditional Aboriginal axe crafting! They shared ideas, learnt new information and had so much

fun doing it! What a great day!

P and C Meeting This WeekThis week’s P and C meeting will be held in our school Library to enable us to share our school’s NAPLAN results with our community. We will also be explaining the school’s Resource Allocation Model, or RAM funding with you prior to our planning for 2017. I look forward to meeting many new faces at this week’s meeting.

Class Formation for 2017This week I will be meeting with the Executive Team to reflect on our strategic planning achievements for 2016 and commence the process of determining our targets and milestones for 2017. As part of this discussion we will be commencing our class formation process for 2017, which will include looking at what new initiatives we may offer students. Some of these may include enhancing our music programs and further developing our inquiry based learning models through the use of technology.

We will also be reviewing our class formation policy to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved for every student. To assist this process, could you please advise the office if you have any specific information or requests relating to your child’s class placement in 2017, or if your child/ren will be leaving the school in 2017, at your earliest convenience. Please note, requests for specific teachers will not be considered. All requests will need to be received by the office by no later than Friday 18th November.

Surfing Star of the FutureCongratulations to Xavier B in 5Z who competed in the Wahu Surfer Grom Comps over the past two weekends at Curl Curl and Conulla, picking up a 4th and 3rd place respectively. What a fabulous achievement in a hotly contested field. Well done, Xavier!

K-2 PerformancesThis term we are excited to announce that K-2 is busy making a music, dance and drama performance for us to enjoy at the end of this term.

There will be one matinee performance and two evening performances. Students are expected to attend both evening performances to showcase all the hard work everyone has put into these spectacular evenings.

Please put aside Tuesday, December 6 and Wednesday, December 7 for these performances.

They will start at 6:30pm and go for around 45 minutes. The matinee performance will be in school time during that week also. We are finalising that date this week and will let you know next week.

Thank you for your assistance.

Save the Date: Our Thank You Morning Tea will be held on Tuesday, November 29 at 10:45am for all volunteer parents, caregivers and friends.

LIVE LIFE WELL @ SCHOOL .....|.....MRS CULLEN

From our school to the sea ...Thank you to all the parents who took their children for a landscape walk and collected collage materials. I heard many encouraging stories of children being shocked at the amount of rubbish and cleaning up a littered area.

In their environmental art sessions, K-2 imagined where a red ball might go if you dropped it in Pickletown and it rolled all the way down the hill. They looked at Powerpoint photos of the main landscape features from Pickle-town to the sea: the steep sandstone cliff on Elanora Rd, the flatter land by Nareen Creek, the broad lagoon and its entrance to the ocean, the rock platform and headland. Each class created artworks showing one part of that landscape journey. The red ball is rolling down in each picture, acting as a symbol for where water would also flow.

Now can you believe this? When Year 2 walked down to Nareen Creek, imagining where the red ball might go, a boy said, “There’s the red ball!” And, there, in the gutter on Elanora Road, was a small red ball, stuck in some leaves! No one was more surprised than me!

Halloween in the Heights….The Halloween disco is on this Thursday and the canteen team has been hard at work coming up with a themed menu for the night.

Featuring on the menu will be the Freaky Feast for $5. This pack includes a spooky pizza or a piece of scary sushi, plus a bloodied Band-Aid and a ghastly ghost. The Band-Aid is a wafer biscuit covered in raspberry coulis and the ghastly ghost is a strawberry dipped in white chocolate. We promise that no can-teen staff members were hurt in making this menu!

Also available on the night will be water, juice and apple slinkies. Our last disco set a slinky record of 60 apples sold – lets see if we can beat that this Thursday.

The Halloween disco is designated as an “amber traffic light” event. The school and P&C are bound by the NSW Health Guidelines which detail that only two red-light days can occur in any term. Red-light foods are items high in sugar, fat and/or salt. Given the number of red-light days in term four leading up to Christmas the disco was given an amber rating by the P&C.

If you are able to help our canteen on Thursday night please contact Erku on 9913 2721 or [email protected]. Feel free to dress-up on the night!

ER

Y... What a weekend!

First up was the Fathers’ Day Campout and Huey did the right thing by raining on Friday night leaving, for once, pliable earth for the insertion of hundreds of tent pegs. In previous years pile drivers were required.

Despite a wet start to the weekend the top oval quickly filled with dads, kids and tents. Just prior to the start of the Campout Games our new Principal, Leesa Martin and Deputy Laurinda Lomas, popped in to meet many of the families. We appreciate your interest and the opportunity for many to have a casual chat. There were games aplenty, sack races, egg and spoon and of course the tug of war.

Dads v. Kids and a MumA truly massive thank you to Ro Brazel and her talented team who seamlessly bring this event to life, we couldn’t do it without you. Thanks also to Janine Ralston who assisted behind the scenes and ran the Campout Games with her two Year 6 helpers Zaley and Maddy.

And if this wasn’t enough the Music Committee ran a very successful sausage sizzle and cake stall at Bunnings Narrabeen on Sunday. A huge thank you to the many, many helpers who cooked, served and enticed, particularly when it came to the cakes. I confess to some overindulgence such is the cooking standard of EHPS parents. Special thanks to Tara Mooney who has gone to extraordinary lengths raising money for the music program, you have pounded many kilometres of pavement and worn out many pairs of shoes in support of a very fine program.

P&C 2017We are now be looking for a new Vice-President for 2017 (we anticipate at least one nominee for President).

All positions are declared vacant at the AGM to be held in November. If you have a desire to serve the school community (and could there be anything better?) please send an email to [email protected] so we can hopefully put some structure in place prior to 2017.

P&C MeetingThe next P&C meeting is this Wednesday, 26 October at 7:15pm in the Library. An Agenda is attached to this email along with the minutes of the last meeting. We look forward to another fabulous turnout of parents and trust you can join us.
