ingenuity and researcn could Invent."Outside the courthouse crowds had

gathered during the evening hours toawait news of the jury which had beencloseted 'in conference since morning. As the courtroom emptied after theannouncement of the verdict and thenews of the decision rendered spread,'cheer after cheer broke forth and aband, returning from' a píenlo, stoppedto add its brass notes to the din.

There was a tense moment whenthe Jurors filed into the box for the'last time. Their foreman, in a voiceshaking with the emotions of themoment, spoke in such a low tone'that he could scarcely be heard. Theclerk read back the formal verdict:

"Ton do say upon your oath thatthe said defendant The Tribune com-

pany, is guilty in the manner andform as the said plaintiff hath in his'declaration in this case complainedagainst him and you assess the dam-

ages of the said plaintiff on occasionef the premises over and above hiscosts and charges by him about thissuit and in his behalf expended, atthe sum of six cents damages,"

The editorial in which The Tribuneattacked Henry Ford and branded himas an anarchist was printed in 1916.

The case has been (. fought throughseveral courts on one point or anotherever since, finally arriving through achange of venue asked by The Tribunein Mt Clemens.

The charge which Judge Tuckermade to the Jury dealt mainly withthe laws of libel and contained amongothers, the following points:

"The Tribune claims that they care-

fully inquired as to what Mr. Ford'sattitude was going to be as to thecare of his men who joined the na-

tional guard and that they basdd theeditorial characterizing him as ananarchist on that information. Theyadmit the publication and, insist thatit was true and therefore Justifiedand that even it not true it was fair, comment upon a matter of public interest, either of which defenses aresufficient if proven true. The burden, however, is upon the defense when'

they attempt to make either of the de-

fenses mentioned. They must estab-lish either the truth of. the charge

'they made, or that it was fair com-

ment within the meaning of thatterm. '

"A newspaper has the same rightas an individual to its opinions andconvictions no more and no less."

The court further informed the Jury, that it they found that the charge wasnntrue they must find for the plaintiff. He declared that there was nothingambiguous about the editorial. Itcalled Mr. Ford an anarchist and theonly way the defendant could escapabeing found guilty of libel. was toprove that charge. He said furtherthat the jury must accept the popular, conception of the meaning of the term,"anarchist." I

Counsel for The Chicago Tribunemade no effort to appeal the casa andtccepted the verdict as it stood.

A jury of 12 farmers have said so bytheir verdict. In which they found TheChicago Tribune guilty of libel whenIt attached that stigma to the nameof the great manufacturer.

"We find the Chicago Tribune guiltyand attach a verdict of six cents."

This sentence from the foreman ofthe Jury which for three months haslistened to the most famous case ofUs kind In history and which debatedmore than 10 hours before it arrivedat its conolusion, were the lines ofthe final act in the dramatic eventwhich has attracted the attention ofthe entire country.

Henry Ford himself ' was not incourt to share in the triumph. He wasin the New Hampshire woods with hisfriends, Thomas Edison and JohnBurroughs. Judge Alfred J. Murphyof Mr. Ford's counsel made a formalstatement for his principals
