Dear All,

It was a quiet start to the week here at EIS West and then came Friday and our school turned green to celebrate St. Pat-

rick’s Day! Lots of fun was had by all as we baked cakes, constructed decorations and danced an Irish Jig in our assem-

bly. If you are free on the weekend please go and support our Irish Dance teacher on 18th March at 7 p.m. at DK

"Stimul", metro Volgogradskiy Prospekt, Sibirskiy proezd, 2/5.

Next week, we have a great initiative from a pupil in our school who wanted to make a difference to the world around

her. Mia approached the Student Council for support in raising funds for a Dog’s Home in her home country. The Stu-

dent Council agreed to support and also decided that they would take the opportunity to support a local charity closer

to home here in Moscow. So, on Friday we will be visited by our three-legged friend, Sarah the dog and students will

have the opportunity to learn more about the work Rus-Dog do.

Students will also be able to wear their own clothes on the Friday as long as they have a animal theme, if they wish to

dress up for the day they are encouraged to bring 100 rubles to their teacher. Finally, there will be an art competition

and the winners will be announced on Friday.

Thank you all very much for your warm wishes, cards, gifts and kindness as I celebrated my birthday today.

Kindest regards,

Nicola Hemingway

Well, what a fantastic week we have had in Nursery. As part of our topic ‘People who help us in school’ we

visited the kitchen and the nurse. Our cook, Tatiana, showed us what happens in the kitchen and how hard

they all work, cooking our food and washing our dishes. We saw the ovens and the big fridges and we

watched our soup cooking on the stove. In the nurse’s room we learned about Nurse Galina’s job and how she

looks after us when we are sick. We listened to our hearts beating through the stethoscope and found out

how tall we are and how much we weigh. This week we are also celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with our friends

and have enjoyed making green cookies in honour of the occasion! Yummy!

Nursery

We’re right back into the swing of things in the Reception Pirates! This week we have learned

the ‘oh’, ‘oh’ sound the letter oa make in goat, boat and float by experimenting with objects

that sink or float. Each Pirate had the chance to first make a hypothesis whether their object

would sink or float before testing it out and making conclusions on why their object sank to the

bottom of our water tub or floated on top. We have also started our new topic Communities

are organised to meet people’s wants and needs, and the Pirates have been separating all the

things they want, from the things they need.

This week Year One have been learning all about time. The children had a wonderful time working with

our very large classroom clock. During our topic lessons the children have been learning what it means

to be a king or a queen. The children came up with their own rules for year 1. Some of their rules had a

lot to do with: No homework and lots of ice-cream. We also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with making lep-

rechaun puppets and preparing delicious cookies.

Year 2 had a lovely holiday and we are glad to be back to school! We celebrated Women’s Day by

painting bouquets of flowers for our wonderful mothers. Year 2 participated in World Maths Day by

competing with children around the world. Thank you to Mr Marsh for organising it! Year 2 were

inspired by Book Week to write their own books and new stories are still being shared every day. The

children are very proud of their work and we are all impressed by their creativity. In Maths, we are

learning about fractions, finding halves, thirds and quarters. In Science, Year 2 are learning about

different habitats and in Music we have begun to learn the song ‘Under the Sea’!

Year 3

This week, Year 3 continued to explore states of matter. We have been looking at defining what a solid, liquid and gas is. In order to explore this in more depth, we made Oobleck. We mixed

together cornstarch and water to make a product that looked like a liquid, but felt like a solid. We discovered that this type of product is called a non-Newtonian fluid, something that has properties of both a solid and a liquid. We look forward to exploring these different states of matter further in

the coming weeks.

This week, Year 4 had fun delving into the ‘Electricity’ Science unit – we learnt how to ensure we

use electricity safely, and had the opportunity to conduct an experiment about how to make a

simple circuit with a bulb and battery holder. In Literacy lessons, we’ve enjoyed reading the story

‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ and we look forward to continuing our study of fantasy fiction. To

celebrate St Patrick’s Day, we created some great artwork too!

In Year 5 this week, we have begun our new topic of Ancient Greece and looked at where major

cities were built and why. In Maths, we have moved on to shape and identifying regular and

irregular polygons, and in English, students have learned how punctuation is used to make our

sentences clearer and even how ‘commas save lives’. An introductory task for our new Design and

Technology unit, saw both years 5 and 6 create the tallest free-standing tower with tape, paper

and a thirty minute deadline. This task certainly got the classes excited for our new topic of

creating a free-standing marble run.

Year 5

This week Year Six have been working extremely hard. They have learnt how to ask good

questions in English and created their own pie charts in Maths. Students created their own

surveys and went from classroom to classroom gathering data. I was also very impressed with

the children’s work in our topic lessons—they were really able to put themselves in the place of

a child that lived through World War 2. The children wrote letters full of emotions and feelings.

Year 6

Last week Year 5 and 6 went on an exciting trip to KidZania. The purpose of their trip was to

experience a real life market place and economy. Once we arrived at KidZania the children

headed straight to the bank to claim their “Kidzo” money. Throughout the whole day the

children have the opportunity to both earn money and also spend their money for exciting

activities including rock climbing and car racing.

Once inside and with their money in their hands the children started taking on roles in their

mini kids community with some people being police officers whilst others delivering pack-

ages around the town. The trip was a great success and everyone

enjoyed our day.
