The interview

Post interview

Final thoughts2How many people enjoy the interview process? In a word or two.

BE PREPARED3Notes:We have a surprising amount of control on the interview

One word - prepare

Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity 4Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity I am not the best barrister in town I am the most prepared barristerThe good news you can control a lot more of the process than you thinkResearch5The more in control you are the less you will perspire. So you have the interview you have been asked to come and meet them what next.

Heres the good news you can find a huge amount out about most companies by simple research -

Where do I find information I am presuming after Rowans presentation that you have lots of interviewsSource: Current Employees

6Firstly where do you look (usual answer the website) the website should be last place you look - why because you still see recent news stories on websites from 2010 websites are usually out of date because they move too slow. I am not saying you dont but it would not be the starting point.

Firstly who do you know that works there you are one connection away from a lot more people than you think - these are the people that will give you real time information use this!Employers want to see that you have actively researched their company - a 2 minute scan of the website is not enough you need to demonstrate that you want to work for this company not a companySource: Online

7Secondly Google News or any similar breaking news source no website is going to tell you bad news about a company and secondly if there was a merger or acquisition in the last week it may not yet be on the website. Either way it is always important to look at the breaking news as so often the first question you get is small talk in the lift. The day after is was reported Osama Bin laden was shot I asked a girl so what do you think of Osama bin laden she looked at me shocked and said.i dont like him! She clearly had not seen the news which may be for a multitude of reasons is no longer accepted as it is too easy to keep up to date.Source: Social media

8Thirdly use social / information media it is very current and searching on the company name on linkedin, facebook, twitter will you so much more information about their brand that perhaps event the interviewer knows.

It is also worth being aware of sites such as boards.ie which will give information on companies that they may not want out there. For instance there was a lot of negativity about some job bridge internships on this site that were not really internships and were re-categorised by boards.ie as slave labour A foot note though always take these comments with a generous helping of scepticism..

9Finally look at other places such as bodies or institutes eg for a sales job see if you can speak to someone in the sales institute and general sites like the CSO or ESRI as it is always good to be knowledgeable on general trends such as the unemployment rate is 14.*% according to the latest cso live register figures exact facts make you seem more attractive to the potential employer

Impress the other person tell them something that they do not know. AIRO site.

And finally do look at the website and if you can find out about the interviewers -0 which I agree is not always possibleFirst Impressions10So now you are going to the meeting fully armed on who the company is and who you are meetingSo there are 4 things that automatically get clocked at interview

Eye Contact your eye contact or lack of it, how you dress sense, your handshake and whether you smile

Lets look at each:

Eye contact: If you do not look at someone when you talk to them it makes them think you have something to hide or that you are shy or that you are being rude or that you do not have basic manners etc, whatever it is it can be a huge turn off

11Dress Sense

12We have 1,5 billion visual brain cell receptors to every language one that we haveDress sense is not about expensive clothes here is Bertie Aherne at the g8 summit and it did not help him. Here is how you are meant to wear those clothes so they can work!

Conversely this is Barack Obama, well known for sartorial elegance but usually its just dark suit, white or blue shirt and a red or blue ties, in reality you notice the man not the clothes. So it is about appropriate clothing so get advice not from you mum!

Handshake14Handshake if I ask you all to remember when you got that wet, or limp handshake, or worse both. I can see some of you looking repulsed by this its only a handshake but we immediately make up our mind on this basis and some of you still have memories of one

Everyone gets nervous but there are a few reasons for this, one is because you are not prepared and then you should be nervous but even if you are there will be natural nerves which can lead to sweaty palms and there are many ways to help calm yourself down including cold water on pulse points and holding your hands against metal on a chair to cool them down or even holding them palm up again you can find all this on that great super highway the internet

Smile15We like to deal with positive people so ensure yoo smile when you enter the roomWhat this highlights is that you are every much in control of your first impression thats the good news!

16Social scientists have done huge work on on verbals or body language as we might call itTodorov judgements of political candidates faces 70%But we forget that our non verbals can affect us also.We smile when we feel happy but also when we are forced to smile by putting a pencil in our teeth we feel happySo we know our mind change our bodies but can our bodies change our minds. We know our non verbals govern how others think and feel about usBut Do our non verbals govern how we think and feel about ourselves.

High vs Low Power PosesCopyright Amy Cuddy, Harvard17So maybe dont sit down in a hunched position before the interview go to the bathroom - Our bodies change our minds/ Our minds can change our behaviour and / our behaviour can change our outcomes

Do you want the Job

Do we like you

20In terms of the actual interview It is important to remember what the employer will be thinking and in reality for all interviews regardless of how may you go through all they base their decision on is:Can you do the JobDo you want the Job Do we like you

So do you have the capability to do the job your skills and experienceDo you want the job there is a big difference between wanting a job and wanting the job know the difference! And do you they like you there is nothing you can do here as you cannot be someone else but you can have a strong first impression

So always bear this in mind regardless of the amount of interviews you go through.Arriving

21There may be more than one building arrive in plenty of time be prepared for problems traffic is not a good excuse

Story of senior credit control job =- being rude to the pa

I have interviewed many people who have been rushed and it never goes well or it is as bad as they smell of that last cigarette they had or they have something stuck in their tooth

Prepared AnswersThe good news - the questions rarely change!

Tell me about yourself

Give me an example of a time

Can you explain your role on the

Do you have questions for us22The good news most of the questions you get are the same every time

What do you think the first question you will get isTELL ME ABOUT YOURSELFWho has this answer prepared - remember this may be the only time you get to tell them certain things abouyt you so make it interesting organised covering everything tat you want to cover in 2/ 3 minutes. 99% of people have never practiced this answer in the mirror. So you know rthe first question great

The good news is the rest will all be ones you can prepare forTalk me through your cvTell me about that major projectWhat did you do in that gap in your cvWhat are your strengths / weaknesses

All of these take a lot of boring preparation.

The last question is nearly always do you have any questions for usWhat person who wants a job in the organisation does not have a single question for them ghave one and not a sucking up question! The one I am still waiting for If I was lucky enough to get thi
