1 Examiner Comments Intermediate Rudiments Examination December 2014 Total Mark for this Examination: 73/100 1. Intervals and Inversions: 8/10 a. One mark has been deducted in the second measure. By raising the bottom note, the student has actually gone in the wrong direction and made the interval smaller (it is a diminished seventh). b. Another mark has been deducted for the incorrect inversion. No part marks are awarded for naming the interval correctly as a diminished second—the name must match the interval that has been drawn. 2. Rests: 7/10 First line: the first measure of is incorrect. The duplet takes up the second half of the bar, so the eighth rest is incorrect. Second line: the second measure of is incorrect. The half rest, although mathematically correct, does not show the strong and weak beat organization of the time signature; two quarter rests must be used to show that beat 2 is a weak beat and that beat 3 is a medium beat. Third line: the second measure of is incorrect. Here, the last two dotted quarter rests must be combined to show that the whole latter half of the measure is silent. 3. Triads: 4/10 In this question, one mark is awarded for each correct key signature and one mark is awarded for each correctly pitched triad, written in the correct inversion. a. One mark has been deducted for the incorrect key signature (it should have six flats instead of five). Then, because the pitch of the triad is affected by the missing C flat, one additional mark has been deducted. b. The student has written the key signature of G minor instead of G sharp minor. Again, the mark for the triad has been deducted because although the notes are written on the correct lines and spaces, the pitch is not correct. c. One mark has been awarded for the correct key signature. However, the student has not raised the leading note in this dominant triad, so no mark is awarded for the triad. d. One mark has been deducted for the incorrect key signature—this time there is one flat too many. Notice, however, that the student has been awarded one mark for the triad, since the pitch of the triad is not affected by the presence of the C flat.

4. Technical Degree Names: 10/10 In this question, one mark is awarded for the correct key name and one mark is awarded for each correct technical degree name, as long as the key name is correct. The marks are linked. All the information here is correct, resulting in a mark of 10/10. 5. Scales: 8/10 In this question, one mark is awarded for each correct key signature and one mark is awarded for each correctly pitched scale. a. Second scale: one mark has been awarded for the correct key signature of D sharp minor. However, the student has written the melodic form of the scale instead of the requested harmonic form, so one mark has been deducted. Third scale: one mark has been deducted because the student has drawn the scale starting on G flat, perhaps confusing the bass clef with the treble clef (a common mistake). 6. Cadences: 6/10 In this question, one mark is awarded for each correctly identified key and one mark is awarded for each correct cadence name. The mark for the cadence name is only awarded if the key name is correct, because otherwise the cadence type is not correct for the key. In other words, the marks are linked. First cadence: the student has named the key as E major instead of E flat major, so one mark has been deducted. Because the key name is incorrect, no mark is awarded for naming this cadence as a Perfect cadence, because it is not, in fact, a Perfect cadence in the key of E major. Second cadence: the key name is also incorrect: this is D major, not G major. For that reason, no mark is awarded for naming this as an Imperfect cadence (which it would be in the key of G major). However, with the key signature of two sharps, this can only be D major, and the only correct answer is Plagal. 7. Transposition: 5.5/10 In this question, the student transposes a given melody to two different keys. Five marks are allotted for each transposition. a. The candidate has named the correct new key (F sharp major) but then slipped and written the key signature of F major. One mark is awarded for naming F sharp major; however, no marks are awarded for the transposition, as the pitch of the melody is incorrect. The entire melody has been circled and an arrow drawn back to the incorrect key signature, which is the source of the problem. b. The candidate has named the correct new key (A flat major) and drawn the correct key signature for this key. The melody has been correctly transposed but for one small slip—an incorrect stem in measure 1—resulting in a half mark (0.5) deduction. Note that the stem direction of all the B flats on line 3 can be either up or down.

8. Key and Meter Identification: 8/10 Five marks have been awarded for the correctly identified keys. Third melody: one mark has been deducted for the answer (this is in ). Fourth melody: the student has written . The correct answer is and one mark has been deducted. 9. Italian Terms: 8/10 One mark is awarded for each correct answer, resulting in a mark of 8/10 on this question. The definition of rubato is not slow and solemn and the student seems to have confused the term loco with the term poco—therefore two marks have been deducted. 10. Analysis: 8.5/10 One mark is awarded for each correct answer, although half marks (0.5) are possible for some parts on this question (for example, for a term definition that is not entirely correct but shows some understanding of the term). d. The student has answered “9” for the number of measures in this piece. Either 8 or 16 would be accepted (16 measures because of the repeat sign), but 9 is not acceptable because the anacrusis is an incomplete measure (completed by the three beats in the final measure). g. The student has written the Italian word crescendo; this is the name of the sign at letter B but does not explain it. For that reason, a half mark has been awarded. The student would need to explain the meaning of the term in order to receive a full mark.
