Joining us in the celebration of our Olympic day all the way from Sochi were Rosie Mclelland and Patrick Chan, Olympic athletes and medalists, who sent a video with their best wishes and thanked our students for their en-couragement. This event would not have been possible without the dedication and commit-ment of some of our staff members. Thank you to Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Recalis and Mrs. White for organising such a big and eventful day.
You can visit the photo gallery at: markhamre-view.com, and the Economist and Sun news-paper and website to enjoy pictures related to our Olympic day. As always, a huge thank you goes out to Starbucks Main Street Unionville for donating 310 cups of Hot Chocolate for students to savour!! Our students signed a big thank you card to thank Greg the store man-ager.
..PACHI the Mascot of the Pan Am 2015, visited our school last Tuesday and interacted with the entire student body. The Pan Am representatives were able to explain to the students what to look for in the summer of 2015 right here in Markham. They showed a video portraying the 41 countries participating in this big event, and more than 10,000 ath-letes and coaches who will be visiting our very own city, Toronto and the GTA. Many stu-dents enjoyed the trivia games played by the mascot and his team.
… Our school just launched a new website, where we have included and updated new in-formation. Please be patient as we are under-taking this big task. Our new website address can be found on top of this page or by visiting:
www.edwardtcrowle.ps.yrdsb.ca
… Our school was buzzing with positive ac-tivities this month. Our Dance- a-Thon Fund-raising was a huge success due to many gener-ous contributions from our parents and com-munity members, and the work of many of our parent council members and volunteers! Stu-dents were showing off their best moves, wear-ing lit up stars and decorating their hair with lit up strings. They came out of the gym sweaty and energized! Thank you to all for making our fundraiser a huge success. A special thank you goes out to Kerry McRorie for leading and or-ganizing a huge team of parent volunteers.
… Our Winter Olympics was another major event which took place on the 19th of Febru-ary. Thank you to our Parent Council Co-Chairs for contributing to the excitement and providing our students with big posters titled “ We All Play for Canada”. Every student and staff member wrote their best wishes and thoughts to every single Canadian athlete in Sochi. The posters were tweeted and posted in the Canada House.
Board Launches New Mission, Vision, Values and Slogan
Mission: To advance student achievement and well-being through public education, which motivates learners, fosters inclusion, in-spires innovation and builds community.
The York Region District School Board is celebrating the launch of its new Mission, Vision and Values statements and slogan – In-
spire Learning!
The Board last reviewed these statements in the late 1990s. Since that time, education in York Region has been influenced by a
number of significant changes, including changes in technology, in our communities and in our learning environments.
Community members, parents/guardians, staff members and students had the opportunity to provide input and share ideas about
the ideal future of public education in York Region. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process.
For more information, visit the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca.
Adult Volunteer Invitation from: E.T. CROWLE P.S.
(905) 471 5775
Dear Parent and School Community Members:
We would like to extend an invitation for you to join us as an Adult Volunteer at our upcoming Day of
Change to be held on March 6th. The Day of Change is a powerful, high-energy program in which
youth (Grade 7/8) and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning proc-
esses. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self esteem, to shift dan-
gerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptance of teasing, violence
and all forms of oppression. The Day of Change program is designed to unite the members of the
school and community and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the school
population. The Day of Change also successfully address issues of violence, teasing, social oppression,
racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol, drugs and personal issues.
We encourage adults to volunteer as positive role models for the benefit of the youth. The program
welcomes parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, police officers, elected officials, clergy, com-
munity members and any other interested adults. This allows youth to see another side of these
adults in addition to their assigned community roles, as there will be time for optional self-disclosure
from all participants. Please notify Mrs. Norton or Mrs. Sadaka in the office if you know of any
adults who would like to be a part of the Day of Change.
Adult Volunteers are crucial for the success of the day. The facilitators, both certified teachers
within the York Region District School Board, will meet with all Volunteers 15 minutes prior to the
start of the program to let you know what is needed from you and to answer your questions. No prior
training is necessary other than the morning check-in meeting. While adults will possibly be hearing
some personal details from the lives of some students within their assigned home group, counselling
of the students is not recommended in the home groups, but comforting students who may be upset
would be wonderful. The Day of Change facilitators closely monitor the program and will give all in-
structions throughout the day. You must be able to stay the entire day. Therefore, the time com-
mitment on this day would be from 9:00-3:30 p.m.
We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful experience!
Sincerely,
Ghada Sadaka,
Principal

While some people are only mildly affected by scents, others experience severe reactions. To ensure the
safety and inclusivity of all learners, the YRDSB has now posted signs in its schools asking that scented
products be left at home. This includes, but is not limited to, body sprays, perfumes and hand sanitizers
with added fragrance.
The problem with scented, personal care items lies in the chemicals used to produce the smell. Many of
these chemicals are irritants and can cause:
Be-
cause our students spend extended periods of time in airtight (i.e. energy efficient) classrooms, air pollut-
ants released by fragrances become trapped and can trigger serious health problems.
As we all “share the air”, please practice a fragrance reduced policy; no one more than
an arm’s length away should be able to smell you. Better yet, go fragrance free.
Be part of the growing movement to keep our indoor air clean.

Our Poetry Café
Miss Hamilton’s grade 4/5 class held their Poetry Café on Feb-
ruary 10th. Leading up to it, we worked hard to read and un-
derstand different poems, such as Limericks, Cinquains, Acros-
tics and Haikus. We learned about choosing meaningful and juicy
words to include in our writing and how to organize our poem
into stanzas. We learned how to create consistent rhyming pat-
terns so that our poems made sense. The Poetry Café helped us
be brave and build on our oral communication skills. It brought
all of our understanding and skills together!

Stage Crew - We Appreciate You!
In January, the E.T. Crowle Stage Crew and MCs were
treated to a pizza lunch for all their incredible contributions
to date: notably the Remembrance Day Assembly and the
Holiday Concert. We thank them for all their hard work,
efforts and leadership - keep up the amazing work!
We’re all looking forward to more great performances ahead,
and we couldn’t do it without you - Thank You!
Now That’s Using Your “Kidneys”!
Two students from Miss Hamilton’s grade 4/5 class went above and
beyond their regular “call of duty”. We are teaching Mrs. Sadaka about the human kidney. We are in grade five and we learned about the human body systems. The kidney is part of the en-docrine system. It acts like a filter and decides what is good for our body and what is bad. It also balances the water levels in our body. The arteries that go into the kidney pump blood in and the veins pump blood out which makes the kidney work. We have 2 kidneys in our body but we don’t need both. It’s better to have 2 but we can live with just one. Mrs. Sadaka is now a kidney expert!

There’s no better way to model and foster an appreciation and understanding of unity and national pride
than through attitude and fashion! Opening Day was celebrated in style as the excited and energetic staff
at E.T. Crowle P.S. sported their Canadian Olympic colors. As the school community prepares for a day of
activities celebrating and supporting their athletes in Sochi, the staff kicked off the festivities with Ca-
nadian pride for all of the athletes participating in the Winter Olympics! Display cases, artwork, bulletin
boards and posters remind and encourage the excited students at E.T. Crowle to continue dreaming big.
There's definitely an Olympic buzz! Go Canada Go!

Our JK/SK students in Mr. Chlan’s room and grades 1/2 in Ms.Cuffe and Ms.Mudrick’s rooms
celebrated their 100th day at school couple of weeks ago. Students, teachers and parents were
involved in this big and important day. Students were showing off how they became 100 days
older and smarter. Many activities included counting to 100, making arts and crafts representing
100 items, and grades 1/2 were engaged in writing journals about their journey so far. Ms.
Mudrick and Ms. Cuffe along with their students dressed up as 100 year old men and women.
The wisdom in the room was unbelievable. It was an exciting day indeed!!!

CROWLE’S HEALTHY CHOICES Tips and Recipes for Healthy Living, by C. Salvo, parent at E.T. Crowle
In today’s busy world, we all know how difficult it is to find ways to maintain healthy
eating habits. With most of our time being spent running our children off to extra-
curricular activities, eating healthy on the go can be a challenge. Each month I will
provide you with some healthy tips and recipes to help guide you and your family
towards healthier eating habits.
Tip of the Month
Are you getting enough fruits and veggies? A good way to ensure that you are eating the daily-
recommended servings is to have fruits and veggies prepared ahead of time. Every Sunday I take some
time to cut up raw veggies and prepared fruit such as grapes, melon and pineapple so that it is ready to
eat. Involving your child/children to choose the fruits and veggies that they enjoy will mean that they
are more likely to eat them. I place my veggies on a veggie platter, which I keep directly in the fridge.
If you don’t have the space, keep veggies in a container so that they are readily available to eat. Fruit
is washed and cut up into bite size pieces and kept in containers in the fridge.
When choosing dips for your veggies, I recommend making your
own as many of the dips contain a high amount of sugar and fat.
Healthy Cucumber Dip (Tzatziki) Ingredients: 1-1/2 cups plain 0 or 2% Greek yogurt
1 medium English cucumber, seeded, coarsely grated and squeezed as dry as possible (about 1 cup)
2 small garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning if
necessary
Cover and chill until ready to serve
