WELCOMEKnebworth’s award winning educational visits offer a range of curriculum-linked and bespoke programmes to suit the needs of your group. We cater for students of all ages. The unique historic setting, exciting learning activities and stimulating outdoor spaces will provide a day out that your students won’t forget!

Knebworth House was originally a Tudor red brick manor house and has been home to the Lytton family for over 500 years. Today, it welcomes visitors to discover more about their local heritage and explore many different periods of time, as well as the beautiful historic Deer Park and 28 acres of Formal Gardens.

Our carefully designed educational visits are planned to meet the needs of the National Curriculum whilst being fun and inspiring. We cover a range of subjects including History, English and Science as well as offering cross-curricular opportunities.

AWARD-WINNING EDUCATIONKnebworth House has held the Sandford Award for excellence in heritage education since 2001.

The judge of the Sandford Award commented: “Knebworth House is an exciting and interesting place for school groups to visit. The Education team take care to offer visits that are tailored to the particular interests and needs of a group, and which make the most of the House and the collection. Often it is possible for school groups to be the only visitors in the House which gives a group the chance to take time in each room and really engage with the topic in hand. This makes for memorable visits!”

TUDOR TREASURE TRAILKS1 KS2

Students will gain an understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world as they step back in time and explore life as a Tudor. Our costumed guides will lead you on an exciting journey through the House in the morning, focusing on the preparations for Queen Elizabeth I’s visit to Knebworth in 1571. Knebworth House is the perfect place to contextualise knowledge of Tudor costume, writing and education, coats of arms and armour, music and entertainment. In the afternoon, the journey will continue outside with the self-guided afternoon session, exploring the gardens while learning about Tudor food and plants. Teaching resources are available on our website.

VICTOR’S VICTORIAN VENTURESKS1 KS2

Discover Knebworth House and Gardens through the eyes of Victor, who grew up in Knebworth House. The servants of the house (our costumed guides) will help develop your students’ understanding of British, local and world history and what life was like locally in Victorian times for the rich and poor.

Your students will find out about Victorian dress, education in Victorian times (including writing on a slate), everyday objects and the Victorian nursery and toys. The self-guided afternoon session will focus on how Victorians used the outside space; you will explore the gardens, sample Victorian games and pastimes and have fun in our Victorian bowling alley. Teaching resources are available on our website.

VICTORIANS LOAN BOXKS1 KS2

Bring the Victorians into your classroom with our Victorians loan box. For 4 weeks, you can borrow a box containing everyday Victorian objects, framed photographs and an information book to explain the contents. Please contact the Group Bookings team for more information and prices.

“Knowing that Elizabeth I actually visited Knebworth gave us an understanding of what life was like for her.” Teacher, Stukeley Meadows Primary

PERSUASIVE WRITINGKS1 KS2

Imagine that Knebworth House, Gardens and Park were to enter a competition to be the best historic house in the country! Your students will take a tour of the house in the morning, finding out about the historical features, taking a quiz as they go around and discussing suitable words to describe what they see. On their return to school, they will be inspired to write using what they have found out to try to persuade the judges that Knebworth House is the best historic house. In the afternoon students may sketch the exterior of the house (self-guided) or you may choose to spend a fun-filled afternoon at Fort Knebworth (June), or the entire Adventure Playground (July – August).

INSPIRING YOUNG WRITERSKS2

This exciting programme will help students to develop positive attitudes and stamina for writing. You will hear about the writers who have lived and worked here, including its most famous writer Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, and feel how this fantastic setting inspired them. Students will use the morning’s experiences to begin writing their own atmospheric story opening, beginning with the immortal line “It was a dark and stormy night…” For your afternoon activity, choose from the self-guided Garden Story Trail or a visit to Fort Knebworth (June) or the entire Adventure Playground (July – August).

The self-guided Garden Story Trail inspires pupils with magical moments from a range of literature such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Twelfth Night. Teams will search for points on our story trail map, listen to extracts from the texts and answer questions designed to prompt their creativity.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GOTHIC KS3

Discover the conventions of Gothic Literature with a tour of the house where our guides will discuss what the Gothic is and introduce some of the hallmarks of the genre. Your students will find out about the Victorian novelist (and resident of Knebworth House) Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton and other Victorian authors such as Charles Dickens; gain some idea of the context in which they were writing and be given the opportunity to do some writing in the Gothic style themselves. This visit would be a great way to introduce the Gothic genre prior to GCSE English. Please note that we can only accommodate a maximum of 20 students at a time for this session.

In the afternoon, the students can examine the Gothic features of the exterior of the house in more detail by sketching creatures on the exterior of the house (self-guided), or you may choose to enjoy our self-guided Gargoyles and Greenery visit or spend a fun-filled afternoon at Fort Knebworth (June) or the entire Adventure Playground (July – August).

MONSTERS AND MAZESKS1

‘Monsters and Mazes’ offers a fun, cross-curricular guided tour of the formal gardens, wilderness area and Dinosaur Trail, while learning about the natural world, numeracy, shape and colour. There’s also time to find out about prehistoric life with a visit to our much-loved Dinosaur Trail. Your students can spend a fun-filled Afternoon at Fort Knebworth (June) or the entire Adventure Playground (July – August).

HOW PLANTS GROWKS1 KS2

Let your children see the topic of ‘Green Plants’ come to life as they explore our Formal Gardens and Walled Kitchen Garden with our guides.

This is a wonderful way for children to explore the world around them and develop their understanding of scientific ideas as they discover how plants grow in the context of a beautiful, established, working garden. Newly planted seedlings, 300 year old trees and plants that have been in existence since the days of the dinosaurs – all contextualised in a peaceful, garden setting.

Each child will take a seed they have planted back to school, along with a lavender bag. Children from Key Stage 2 also receive a recipe card. Teaching resources are available on our website to use before or after your visit to continue the learning in the classroom.

Your students can spend a fun filled afternoon at Fort Knebworth (June) or the entire Adventure Playground (July).

How Plants Grow is only available in June and July. Please book early to avoid disappointment, as we are only able to accommodate two schools per week for this programme.

“It’s so interesting showing children how we sow and grow our fruit and veg, most have only seen them in supermarkets or served on their plates!” Head Gardener
