A Few Reasons for Studying Abroad

• Studying abroad is a life-changing experience: you’ll meet new people, learn about new cultures, learn another language, see someplace new;

Courses• Take up to 7 credits

– 3 credits of Educational Foundations (435)– 3 credits of Mathematics Education (420* or 490)– 1 credit of study abroad

• Examine the similarities and differences of education practices in the US and Peru, including

– How schools are organized -Public and Private Schools– Teacher preparation and training -Curricula and standards

• Study learning theories while you yourself are learning about a new culture!

• Create a mathematics curriculum project and teach in a Peruvian middle school classroom

• Study and experience different cultural attitudes towards the nature of mathematics and mathematics education

What Will We Be Doing?• 1 week of course work on UWO campus• 1 ½ weeks of classes in Lima and 1 ½ weeks traveling

• Field trips during class days to public and private schools, governmental agencies, and international organizations

- School visits- Peruvian Ministry of Education- Nonprofit Education Groups- Development Projects in Lima- Markets- Teach in a Peruvian school

• Week long tour around Peru including jungle lodge, boating and hiking in the rainforest, hiking the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

• Puerto Maldonado is a dynamic, young and bustling frontier city, on the Madre de Dios River, and the capital of Madre de Dios Department.
