WIC Week is here. I hope that you have reviewed our WIC Week schedule and can join us for one or more events. WIC Week is designed to increase the visibility of women working in the construction industry. The National theme for this year is “Be the Power in Your Success.” Most of us don’t realize how much power that we have. Marketing professionals know it: Almost all marketing is targeted toward women because they make the spending decisions. “Women now drive the world economy,” according to the Harvard Business Review. While it is important to recognize and appreciate all the women who have paved the way in the construction industry and the workforce overall, but we should not focus on the struggle but rather what we can do to make a change. There’s no reason why hardhats and high heels can’t share a closet.

United Way strives to build collaborative solutions to create strong alliances that can make the large-scale impact that is needed in our community.

United Way’s Community Impact work is driven by the Steps to Success model, which illustrates key milestones on the path to living a successful life. United Way doesn’t define success as being famous or a millionaire, but rather it is about having basic needs, a good job, and being prepared for school. The talk will include key points on local data related to each step and how we can find solutions to build a stronger, safer, and healthier Central Virginia.

SAR SPRING FORUM

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 15 This year the Charlotte Chapter will be hosting Spring Forum. If you wish to attend, please complete the registration form (attached) and send it to the Chapter’s Treasurer, Merredith McMahon with your check of $175 made payable to the NAWIC Richmond Chapter. Please note that the registration form says to either register on line or mail it to NAWIC Spring Forum CLT. The Chapter mails in one check for everyone who is attending along with your registration form. You will have 45 days after the conference date to submit a report for reimbursement (we simply just return your check). If we do not received a report, your check will be deposited. Please make sure you send your monies to our Chapter Treasurer and NOT to the SAR contact as indicated on the Registration form (Attached). You are responsible for making your own travel and hotel arrangements. If you wish to ride or room with one of the other members attending, just let Merredith know. The hotel rooms are going fast!

PROTECT YOUR EYES Over 2,000 eye injuries occur each day on job sites across the U.S. and one in ten of those injuries required missed days of work to recover. Of the total amount of work-related eye injuries that occur, 10 to 20 percent will cause temporary or permanent vision loss. While many think that eye injuries only occur in construction, trade or manufacturing jobs, nearly 40% of work-related eye injuries happen in healthcare facilities, offices, laboratories and other similar work environments. Safety experts and eye care providers agree that the right eye protection could have lessened the severity of these injuries or even prevented 90% of them.

Flying objects, particles, tools, chemicals and harmful radiation are the cause of most eye injuries. In many cases, implementing safe workplace practices and using appropriate protective eyewear could prevent injuries entirely. March is Workplace Eye Safety Awareness Month, which offers a great opportunity to remind everyone to help protect eyes from potential injury. If you do experience an eye injury, contact your eye doctor as soon as possible.

Volunteer info: It takes EVERY MEMBER of our chapter (and often some guests!) to run our Golf Tournament. Please make sure your calendar is marked for Thursday, May 2nd to spend all day or half day with us at Hunting Hawk Golf Club in Glen Allen, VA. Sign Up sheets will be coming out as well as further instructions and helpful hints.

We ask that you wear a red or white top to the tournament (no jeans allowed for bottoms). NAWIC logo is not required for the Golf Tournament, however if you would like to purchase an item with the NAWIC logo for the Golf Tournament or for your general use, samples and order forms are available at the March and April General Meetings, or you can reply to us by email.
