What is Education Encore?“No Stress! No Tests! No Grades! Just Fun!”

Education Encore, offered by the Continuing Education department at Gulf Coast State College, provides non-credit enrichment classes for active adults on topics ranging from Yoga to Russian History, Creative Writing to Acrylic Painting and much more.

Since 1991, Education Encore has been operated on a volunteer basis by the Education Encore Advisory Council.

The council supports the planning, implementation and evaluation of program curriculum.

The goal of Education Encore is to provide a learning environment that is fun, engaging and offers diversity, insight and wisdom – in which mature adults explore new ideas and make their own unique contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate?Education Encore is for adults. Participants are not required to have Florida residency.

When is it offered?Education Encore is offered during the fall and spring semesters at both the Panama City Campus and the Gulf/Franklin Center. Classes meet once a week for six consecutive weeks.

What is the cost?The fee for participants at the Panama City Campus is $88 for the six-week program, which includes four classes each Friday.

The fee for participants at the Gulf/Franklin Center is $66, which includes three classes each Wednesday.

To ensure the viability of the total program, we do not charge on a per-class basis. Therefore, the fee is the same whether you attend one class or more.

Where are the classes held?Each course description includes the abbreviated classroom location. Participants will be notified of class location changes during orientation. To see a map of the Panama City Campus, see page 14.

What about special needs?Participants who have a disability that may require special assistance are requested to contact the Office of Disabled Student Services at 850.872.3834 at least one week prior to the first day of class.

BookstoreBrowse through the large selection of supplies, textbooks and campus must-haves, including official Gulf Coast State College apparel and Commodores merchandise.

LibraryThe college library provides numerous research materials and Internet access. There are more than 80,000 books and 900 journal subscriptions from which to choose.

The Wellness BuildingThe Wellness Building includes a pool, a hydro-therapy pool and a fully equipped weight and fitness room.

Athletic EventsBe a part of the action as the Commodores take on the competition in baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball. No matter what your favorite sport the games are always exciting to watch.

Amelia G. Tapper Center For The ArtsSee some of GCSC’s most talented students performing on the Amelia Center Main Stage or displays of their artwork in the Gallery. The Visual & Performing Arts Division sponsors several theatre, art and concert events each semester. Encore participants may attend any of these events free of charge or at discounted rates.

Field TripsEach semester the Panama City Campus offers several fun-filled day trips to historical, cultural, environmental or entertainment sites in the area. Field trip destinations will be announced during Initial Registration.

Visit the Welcome Station during the semester to reserve your spot for special events. All costs while on field trips are the responsibility of the participant.

Acrylic Painting This is a two period class. Whether you are just starting or consider yourself a seasoned artist, come explore the diversity of acrylics through this class. Color mixing, technique and a wide variety of uses for this flexible medium will be utilized. Come and enjoy experimenting with this vivid and versatile paint. Instructor: Jennifer Bonaventura is a working professional artist who has been instructing art classes for all ages for more than five years. Her award-winning designs have been internationally published and collected. In addition to fine art originals on canvas, Jennifer works on interior and exterior murals, signs and graphic design projects.Section: 0508 | Room: SUW260 | Limit: 25

Car Maintenance 101Learn the simple everyday language of how to operate, service and maintain today’s electronically controlled cars. You’ll discover the do’s and don’ts of finding a reliable repair shop, questions you need to ask BEFORE work is started on your vehicle, the pros and cons of using synthetic fluids and mileage effects on using certain oils. Also, get a full explanation of what those yellow and red lights on your dashboard mean. Instructor: James Morris is an ASE Master L-1 Certified Technician with over 35 years experience maintaining import and domestic vehicles. Legal Briefs Get the “inside story” from a prominent criminal defense attorney on what is happening locally, nationally and worldwide. Hear about which laws apply and how they impact citizens. This fascinating class will look at both sides of the story, probe the humor and consider the facts and the hearsay. Be prepared to be challenged to find the truth! Mixed Media Jewelry This is a two period class. Create fun, personalized and unique jewelry using mixed media techniques. Learn a wide range of techniques using beads, charms, fibers, recycled and found materials, resins, metal, wire and much more to create one-of-a-kind designs. One Page “Wonders” with MS Word 2007Prerequisites: Computer–Basics or equivalent experience. Must be comfortable using Windows and the mouse. Experience with other software and/or the keyboard is helpful. Bring a USB drive. Master basic word processing skills while creating a flyer with clip art, photos and text. Move on to creating a cookbook with tables, text and your own photos, plus explore online templates. Advance through projects quickly and practice your skills with the project of your choice. Personal Awareness & Confidence Training | NEW!Learn how to protect yourself with legal tactics, situational awareness and observation skills to be more aware of dangerous situations. Dangerous situations may occur on personal property, in public spaces and involve one or more persons. Want a non-technical approach to understanding and managing files stored on your computer? Sign up for this course to conquer navigating and saving files by creating, organizing and using folders. Move, copy, delete and sort stored documents using a variety of media. Perform backups of essential files. Use a variety of techniques to search for specific documents and gain an understanding of file types. Instructor: Trish Lewis has years of experience as a Computer Science instructor and has extensive practical experience. She uses a variety of techniques to ensure that each student is provided with effective hands-on learning. WatercolorThis is a two period course. Explore the dynamic nature and spirit of watercolor! Discover a variety of watercolor processes through a tutorial, short lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice. All levels of artists, from beginner to advanced, are invited to join this class. Basic watercolor materials will be required. The material list, provided upon request, is designed to keep the cost at a minimum. For participants who do not have watercolor supplies, a kit will be available to purchase for about $60 on the first day of class. Instructor: Marie Brusher is an accomplished artist. She has developed an acute sense of color and style by sharing her experience and knowledge of the various arts through demonstrations, workshops, lectures and innovative teaching. Species covered include inshore and offshore saltwater fish specific to our local area. Instructor: Ron Barwick is a member of the International Custom Rod Builder’s Guild. He has instructed hundreds of students in fishing rod construction as well as fishing technique seminars at Tyndall AFB, University of Florida and numerous marinas in the Panama City area. Body and Spirit Mind Dance Learn a different movement each week! Focus on developing strength, grace, rhythm and confidence in moving your body—and have fun. Encompass a fusion of many dance styles, including belly dance, gypsy skirt dance, veil dance, drum solo, cane dance and an interpretive Greek dance. Instructor: Janet Jones, also known by her dance name Talibah, began dancing when she was 66. In addition to participating in expert belly dance workshops, she has studied with several local instructors. Cardio DancePump! Pump! Pump it up! Join us for a heart-pumping good cardio workout in which dance moves are choreographed to both modern and old school music. Also, practice your moves with dance steps and songs from the legendary Dirty Dancing movie. Instructor: Anna Wilson is a Certified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. She teaches Zumba, Cardio Kickboxing and Step Bootcamp. Chair Yoga | NEW!Chair Yoga has all the health benefits of traditional yoga while minimizing any safety issues. Postures are modified using a chair either seated or for support in standing poses. Yoga poses increase circulation, flexibility and strength, and are done in specific alignment to teach the body healthier forms of movement. Yoga breathing practices and meditation are incorporated to aid in relaxation and rejuvenation. Chair yoga is especially designed for those who find it difficult to sit on the floor or get up from the floor, but is great for anyone who is interested in improving their physical and mental well being. Instructor: Dawn Brooks is a Registered Nurse and has completed Yoga Teachers Training at Discovery Yoga in St. Augustine, FL. This is a yoga program in the Kripalu tradition. Civil WarDiscuss the political, military, social and economic changes that occurred during the Crisis of the Republic. The Civil War initiated a significant change in the paradigm of states’ rights to civil rights. Exposing beyond the “mainstream Hollywood nostalgia,” guest speakers will share their knowledge of various themes of the war. Computer – Digital Image Editing Prerequisites: 1.) Access to a computer with a Windows desktop, 2.) Ability to open multiple programs, 3.) Ability to minimize, maximize and restore Windows, 4.) Ability to drag and drop using a mouse, 5.) Ability to use scroll bars to position items and 6.) Ability to open Windows Explorer to expand/collapse folders. Students must be comfortable with creating, renaming and deleting files, folders and subfolders. This is a two period course. Discover hands-on techniques and learn amazing and creative ways to edit ordinary photographs. Become familiar with Photoshop Elements to repair old photographs, use image correction, make photo composites and add special effects to images. Instructor: Glen VanderPloeg has 30 years of involvement with computers and Computer-Aided Education for the Navy. Drawing & Colored Pencil | NEW!Practice basic drawing skills and use colored pencils to create a one-of-a-kind composition. Explore layering, blending, softening, defining color, overlapping and mixing colors. Come and join the fun! You’ll examine the conclusions of the government investigations, the proposed conspiracy theories and the supporting evidence in an effort to draw your own conclusions. Ancient Egyptian History: The New Kingdom | NEW!If you like history, you will enjoy this review of the major figures and events of the Middle Kingdom. Plus, discuss the examination of the Tombs in both the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. Take an in-depth look: 1.)
