Our students were given an opportunity to highlight their talents with our “student inspired” division logo contest. Several local businesses and organizations showed their support by rewarding the winners with gift cards and even a $100.00 cash prize. Our new logo designed by Jayvaris Johnson, BHS Student, is now being used in school publications while shining a light on all the wonderful happenings here in Brunswick County Public Schools.

As we continue to be agents of change, our redesigned division webpage has brought a lot of awareness to our school division. With a “fresh look” and personalized layout, we have taken each school page to the next level. News and Announcements are easily located and our Twitter feed runs throughout the day. Each page is adorned with photo albums of division highlights as a recap of many of our school events.

We’ve had several opportunities for parents and community members to become engaged in our schools this year. Our division-wide Pre-K nights provided families with engaging activities and even mini-workshops. Our School Literacy Nights provided students and

parents the opportunity to read and relax by campfire while enjoying a family dinner sponsored by our Child Nutrition program. Totaro’s First Annual STEM Night was a teacher- lead, power-packed event. Upon entry, families received math bags with manipulatives and fun take-home goodies. Administrators throughout the division were on hand to facilitate stations. Some of the stations included a 3-D Printer, Family Photo Booth, Robotics, and iPad learning kits.

In addition, there is so much to celebrate in BCPS! At BHS, during our College Day event, School Counselors helped students to build their college admission portfolios. In turn, BCPS students earned $227,300.00 in scholarships with on-site acceptance to multiple colleges and universities.

Feed VA Day of Action-Sweet Potato Day was a time of community partnership, school collaboration, and delicious healthy food sampling. This memorable event was hosted by Red Oak-Sturgeon Elementary School and sponsored by VCU Massey Cancer and Research Center and the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission. Students from Brunswick High School had a chance to enjoy lunch with the students at Red Oak-Sturgeon and even explore the wonderful world of planting and growing sweet potatoes.

Brunswick High School, Russell Middle School, and Red Oak-Sturgeon hosted Veterans Day programs while honoring our local veterans and service members. The JROTC and Student Government Association members hosted a ceremony and luncheon for those in attendance.

Under the leadership of our BHS Student Ambassadors, the Brunswick County School

Board approved and implemented a 100% tobacco and e-cigarette free program for the division. Brunswick County Public Schools is now the 40th school in the Commonwealth to participate.

As we strive for full accreditation at all schools, it is imperative that there is a focus on capacity building through meaningful and targeted professional development. After having, the faculty and staff complete a needs assessment and in correlation with data analysis, this fall we began our BCPS Professional Development Series. This initiative provided an opportunity for teacher leaders, administrators, and consultants to develop and lead sessions. In addition, several teacher leaders and administrators have participated in the Teacher Leader in Action and Principal Leader in Action programs, respectively.

At the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year, we realized that we have much to celebrate in Brunswick County Public Schools. We have a dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to ensuring that Brunswick County Public School students are competitive globally. We are appreciative of the support of the community and encourage others to engage in the many happenings of our division. We have high expectations of our students and staff and are confident they will rise to the challenge with the support of our community.
