EDU 614: Integrating Technology in the Classroom

What is Symbaloo EDU?

• Symbaloo EDU is a visual tool that serves as free social bookmarking website.

• All information is saved automatically to the cloud.

How can Symbaloo EDU be used in the classroom?

• Symbaloo can be used to conveniently store and organize educational websites and various online resources

• This site allows teachers to scroll through published “webmixes” which separate subjects into categories such as educational tools and games

• Teachers can also create and share their own webmixes in order to meet the needs of their students

• There are no ads, so all content is appropriate for students

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

• Website tiles are organized and easy to read

• Not too difficult to edit or remove existing tiles

• A mobile app is available for easy access

• Can connect and display RSS Feeds

Disadvantages

• A bit of a learning curve

• Site is somewhat difficult to navigate, for instance I had some trouble locating the page I had been working on.

• More options available though the paid version

1. Choose between Symbaloo, and Symbaloo Edu.

2. Once you have decided on a webpage you may create an account.

3. I decided to focus on Symbaloo EDU for my presentation.

Creating a Symbaloo EDU Page

• A brief tutorial will pop up and show new users the possibilities for editing a page

• For example, users will learn how to add a new tile. This can be done by simply clicking on a blank tile.

• Once a tile has been clicked on, this information will pop up on the right-hand side of the screen

Editing A Tile

• Once users have clicked on the Edit tile button, this screen will pop up.

• Here, users can create a tile by simply adding address to a website

• Users can add a name, color and badge to a tile for easy recognition

• Here, I entered information for the PBS Kids website.

• I simply copied and pasted the web address and then customized the tile adding color and text.

• Many of the websites I entered had an icon available that corresponded with the site

• A PBS Kids tile already exists. This duplicate can easily be deleted.

• By simply right-clicking on a tile, users can choose to edit, move/copy or delete a tile

Accessing the Toolbar

•Users can navigate the Symbaloo EDU toolbar by clicking on the available links listed at the top of the screen.

Toolbar Features

•For example, if users click the features button on the toolbar, this page will appear.

•Here, users will find useful links to tools such as Dictionary, Calculator, and Notepad. Also helpful sites such as Flickr and Teacher Tube are found on this page.

Options• On the home page, users

also have access to an options button.

• Once clicked, this button provides users options to edit a webmix. Users may decided to change the sites wallpaper, or the webmix size.

• On the bottom, there a spot to change the color of the grouped, categorized tiles
