ga.Bukod rito,maaari ding mag-

“They said it is luck, but theSupreme Court affirmed the con-tract of Korean Water to man-

age the National Power Corpo-ration power plant in Angat Damand they will assume at least halfof the cost of the rehabilitationof the dam,” sabi ng gobernador.

NO CONCEIT, absolutely, of some prophetic sense here. But apparently as relevant today as the day it was written five

years ago is this piece on our beloved Apu Ceto, on the occasionof his 71st birthday.

Saturday, March 9, marks his 76th, entering the second year ofhis supposedly mandated retirement. Sans papal acquiescence,Apu Ceto continues being his best sermon to his flock.

Our good shepherd“IF WE really pray together, (we would discern that) one cannotmonopolize truth. Truth begins in the heart, the sanctuary of ourconscience.”

Thus spoke the Most Reverend Paciano B. Aniceto, archbishopof San Fernando, at the thanksgiving Mass in celebration of his71st birthday on Sunday.

He could well be speaking of that sector of society that hasarrogated unto itself all possession of truth. But, no, the archbishop’ssermon encompasses all the faithful, their individual politicsundistinguished.

In the presence of Her Excellency, PresidentGloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Reverend GovernorEddie T. Panlilio, Congressman Dong Gonzales,City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, and a host of other politicians and local leaderswho were allowed through the stringent securitymeasures imposed by the Presidential SecurityGuard at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary,Apu Ceto shone as the shepherd truly worthy ofhis flock.

To Apu Ceto, there never are black sheep. Hehas faith in the goodness inherent in anyone, evenamong those who have gone astray. I should know,I was once Apu Ceto’s most prodigal child, converted by his faith in his God and his belief inme, notwithstanding my frailties.

“We need to purify and change. If we followthat process, we will have a peaceful and justsociety with integrity. You should watch and praythat you don’t fall into temptation.”

The temptation of corruptive power – for thosein government, that which deny the people of theirright to live with human dignity. Apu Ceto maywell have meant.

“Our country is at a crossroad. We are a dividedpeople, eternally quarrelling, bickering. Somemedia contribute to this. We are falling into thepit.” Apu Ceto warns.

But instead of taking his flock to the streets ofprotests to foment greater divisions, Apu Ceto, pointed them to the way that he has alwaysembraced:

“We are asking the Lord to permeate everystrata of society. Families and leaders should workso there is a holistic approach in the search for areal, authentic, common good, for the progressand development of our people.”

Ora et labora. Pray and work. Christian life atits most essential.

“Let us pray together, discern together so thatwe could know the will of God for the Filipinopeople.”

Apu Ceto laid down anew, the very ground uponwhich sprang the Catholic Bishops Conferenceof the Philippines pastoral statement on truth. That which, Apu Ceto lamented, made theshepherds “unpopular.”

He cautioned those that found cause forimpatience, if not disbelief, in the pastoralstatement: “The Church is a sign of contradictionbut it comes from a position of strength becausethe center of evangelization is Jesus.”

Oh, how conveniently have we Christiansforgotten the very paradox of our faith: of spiritualstrength in human weakness, of the triumph inthe Cross, of being born in dying.

“We have to give the precise mission of theChurch, we do not respond to external pushesonly. Intrinsic in its nature and mission, theChurch must define society, not society definingus.”

Apu Ceto has spoken. Most eloquently. Now,were the more loquacious – and mediaphilic – ofour churchmen as discerning as him...

RegardingHenry

Henrylito D. Tacio

“IT’S BECAUSE at the time youare sick, you are already highrisk. You are susceptible to allkinds of infection.”

That was what Dr. JosephineVillafuerte, chief of Davao CityHealth Office (CHO), said asquoted in “Sun.Star Davao” re-port written by Arianne Caryl N.Casas.

The doctor was talking aboutpneumonia, the infection thatcaused the death of ChristianBrando, the troubled eldest sonof the late famed actor MarlonBrando. For two consecutiveyears, pneumonia is the num-ber one among the top 10 lead-ing causes of mortality in thecity.

The CHO said that from2011 to 2012, pneumonia is theleading cause of death in thecountry’s largest city. This isalarming since pneumoniaranked fourth as the top caus-es of mortality in the city from2006 to 2010.

Every year, pneumoniacosts the Philippine Health In-surance Corp. (PhilHealth) atleast P2 billion annually, ac-cording to Dr. Anna Lisa T. OngLim, a pediatrics professor atthe University of the Philippines– College of Medicine.

In a news conference, Dr.Lim said pneumonia is one ofthe top five leading causes ofmortality in the country. It is oneof the diseases caused by“Streptococcus pneumonia” orpneumococcus, a type of bac-teria that is also responsible formeningitis, sinusitis, and bron-chitis.

“Pneumonia is an infectionof the small air sacs of the lungs(called alveoli) and the tissuesaround them,” notes “The Mer-ck Manual of Medical Informa-tion.” “It is not a single illnessbut rather many different ones, each caused by a different mi-croscopic organism –whether itis a bacteria, virus, or fungus.”

Usually, pneumonia startsafter organisms are inhaled intothe lungs, but sometimes theinfection is carried to the lungsby the bloodstream or it mi-grates to the lungs directly froma nearby infection.

According to the Mayo Clin-ic, pneumonia often mimics theflu, beginning with a cough anda fever, so you may not realizeyou have a more serious condi-tion.

WebMd, published byHealthwise Incorporated, sayssymptoms of pneumonia caused

by bacteria usually come onquickly. They may include:cough (you will likely cough upmucus from your lungs; mucusmay be rusty or green or tingedwith blood), fever, fast breathingand feeling short of breath, andshaking and “teeth-chattering”chills (may happen only one timeor many times).

Other symptoms includechest pain (often feels worsewhen you cough or breathe in),fast heartbeat, feeling very tiredor feeling very weak, nauseaand vomiting, and diarrhea. When the symptoms are mild, the doctors call it as “walkingpneumonia.”

Older adults, however, mayhave different, fewer, or mildersymptoms. They may not havea fever. Or they may have acough but not bring up mucus. The main sign of pneumonia inolder adults may be a changein how well they think. Confu-sion or delirium is common.

“Symptoms caused by vi-ruses are the same as thosecaused by bacteria,” WebMdstates. “But they may come onslowly and often are not as ob-vious or as bad.”

Dr. Villafuerte advised peopleto undergo a medical checkup

immediately. “When you havedifficulty of breathing with coughand fever, have yourself admit-ted in a hospital,” she urged. “Youdon’t treat it as if it’s an ordinarycough because you might al-ready have pneumonia.”

“A doctor or nurse checksfor pneumonia by listening to thechest with a stethoscope,” theMerck manual says. “In mostcases, the diagnosis of pneu-monia is confirmed with a chestx-ray.”

A report released by “Reu-ters” said that doctors maymiss some cases of pneumo-nia if they rely solely on theirpatient’s medical history andsymptoms without also takingx-rays.

Dutch researchers, who pub-lished their findings in the “Eu-ropean Respiratory Journal,”found that of 140 patients whohad their pneumonia diagnosedby x-ray, doctors init iallythought only 41 of them had thesevere lung infection.

“That’s worse than flipping acoin,” said Dr. Richard Watkins, who was not involved in thestudy but has researched howdoctors diagnose pneumonia. “Ithink that’s an argument fordoing chest x-rays.”

Pneumonia often clears upin 2 to 3 weeks. But olderadults, babies, and people withother diseases can becomevery ill. They may need to be inthe hospital.

‘Danger ofdarkness now

covering world’PLEASE PRAY to the Holy Spirit for wise discernment in dealingwith prophecies in our times. There are too many modern-dayprophets and some of them seem to be outside the realm of thesupernatural.

Now, let me share messages purportedly conveyed by theBlessed Virgin Mary to Patsy Soto, reputed to be a pious womanwho has the gift of bilocation, levitation and reading of minds andsouls.

Message given by the Blessed Mother on February 16, 2013 at4:30 a.m.:

“My dear children, the days grow shorter beforethe peace of my Jesus settles over the earth. Thatis why I come to you out of His love for Hiscreation. My little ones, pray without ceasing.Pray with a desire to please your living God, whoallows me to come to you for such a long time. Iam always as close as your heart, where I desireto stay out of Motherly love for you. Thank you.”

Message given Sat. Feb. 23, 2013 at 7:40 a.m.:“My dear children, I can only urge you to more

prayer and fasting to combat these critical times.Pray for your Church during a time of importantchange. Each of you, my little ones, is anecessary part of your faith, imparting aresponsibility to be obedient to the teaching andguidance in all things. Now, more than ever, youare needed to pray and fast. I am with you always.Thank you.”

Message given at 11:10 a.m. Sat. March 2,2013 at home:

“My dear children, my heart is filled with hopefor my little ones, who understand the need forfasting and prayer in order to bring holy leadershipto the Church of my Jesus. Hear me with yourhearts as I ask these things of you. You cannotfully comprehend the danger of darkness now

covering your world. I call you with love, mychildren. Listen to me. Thank you.”

Over in Medjugorje, the Blessed Mother alsogave her monthly message to Mirjana last March2:

“Dear children; Anew, in a motherly way, I amcalling you not to be of a hard heart. Do not shutyour eyes to the warnings which the HeavenlyFather sends to you out of love. Do you love Himabove all else? Do you repent for having oftenforgotten that the Heavenly Father, out of His greatlove, sent His Son to redeem us by the Cross?Do you repent for not having accepted themessage? My children, do not resist the love ofmy Son. Do not resist hope and peace. Alongwith your prayers and fasting, by His Cross, mySon will cast away the darkness that wants tosurround you and come to rule over you. He willgive you the strength for a new life. Living itaccording to my Son, you will be a blessing anda hope to all those sinners who wander in thedarkness of sin. My children, keep vigil. I, as amother, am keeping vigil with you. I am especiallypraying and watching over those whom my Soncalled to be light-bearers and carriers of hope foryou – for your shepherds. Thank you.”

No anomaly in city projectsPamintuan stressed thatthere were no irregularprojects reported by theCPMC.

“The committee, whichis very active from its cre-ation up to now, present-ed its observations includ-ing perceptions of some ofits members during one

formal sessions of theLDC last year. These ob-servations were properlyanswered and clarified dur-ing the said meeting,” themayor said.

Pamintuan created andactivated the CPMC in 2011as part of the policy of hisadministration to ensure

transparency, a major com-ponent of his program forgood governance.

“I am surprised why thealleged observations of theCPMC are now being usedagainst me and my ad-ministration when it is aknown fact that the saidcommittee reports to me

through the City Planningand Development Office, and is directly adminis-tered by the Office of theMayor,” Pamintuan statedin his explanation.

Further, Pamintuannoted the following in hisreply:

• The alleged “poorplanning” for the projectsin Barangays Amsic andAnunas was a baselessperception as the projectsunderwent the requiredprocess of identification bythe concerned offices ofthe city government andapproval of the LDC;

• There was no addi-tional cost incurred by thecity government involvedon the alleged variance rel-ative to the road construc-tion at Angeles-MagalangRoad;

• On the Office of thecity’s Persons with Dis-abilities Office (PWDO)not being “PWD friendly.”The city government wasvery transparent with re-gard to the construction ofthe said office. Since theconstruction of the officewas under warranty, thecontractor was notified toinstall the necessary facil-ities such as ramps, handrailings, etc immediately;

• On the allegation of“perceived overpricing” ofthe Legislative Building. The building is about 85percent complete. It was

the past administrationwhich determined thecosts of the project. Inother words the project,which we inherited from thepast administration, is stillunfinished. We cannotsee any basis how the al-leged overpricing occurredon a project that is yet tobe completed;

• On the issue of therestrooms at the PampangPublic Market: the amountallotted for the repair of theeight (8) restrooms totaledP600,000 or P75,000 perrestroom. It must be con-sidered that these are pub-lic restrooms and the gov-ernment can only regulate, not prohibit, the use ofthese restrooms. Public re-strooms as they are, theywere constructed for thefree use of the public andwe cannot be picky as towho should or could usethem. As such, daily usewill definitely affect thephysical appearance of therestrooms.

“We believe that theletter of Mr. David, who isa very close associate ofCongressman Carmelo‘Tarzan’ Lazatin, my polit-ical opponent this comingMay elections, is bereft oftruth and nothing but apolitical move to destroymy credibility as the in-cumbent city mayor,” Pa-mintuan stressed in hisletter. –Team Agyu Tamu

“It’s either they over-charge the parents or shortchange them,” ani Alip.

“Dapat siguro, basahinmuna yung DepEd Order,at itigil muna yang mgafield trip,” ani Bokal FelixOple.

–Dino Balabo

Dingdong Dantes rejoices over MarianRivera's winning Best Actress Award

If I were part of the MMFF committee, I will be

hurt definitely.“But I don’t think I’m in a position to say anything because I’m just a recipient of the award. If you ask questions, I think you have to

address it straight to them.”Pero nirerespeto raw niya ang damdamin at opinyon ng nakatunggaling aktor-pulitiko.“At least, honest siya, ’di ba? But kaya nga, siguro, if there

are issues like that, I’m pretty sure, he knows kung sino ang dapat kausapin and then again, that’s his opinion, let’s all respect it,” say ng aktor.

“I will always be grateful for things like that with or without getting it. But siyempre, iba talaga if you get it. Ibatalaga.”

Natural, kasama sina Jericho at Kristin,e but this time mgaparents na sila ng mga bida.

Bakit kayo

’yung ginawang nanay at tatay?

Pleasecome back on TV na. Mostly Malaysians ang namimilit, eh. ‘Please take care of her!’Ginaganu’n ako, eh.

Parang sosyal.Mahirap pakisamahan.

“Oo! Hahaha! Perohindi talaga.

BALIK-SITCOM sa“Vampire ang Daddy Ko,” si Bossing vic Sotto.“This is different from my past sitcoms so I’m excited,” sabi niya.

E, before, ako lagi angama niya. First time ko ring kasama in a sitcom ang child wonder ngayong si Ryza Mae Dizon.”

Kumusta na sila ni Pauleen Luna? “Okay, wala namang problema.”Pia Guanio then was his leading lady in “Full Haus.” Didn’t he consider Pauleen to be his

partner in “Vampire ang Daddy Ko” instead of Korean DJ Jin Ri Park? “Sa drama series 'yunnakalinya, hindi sa comedy. May bago nga siyang drama (“Unforgettable”). Koreana anghinanap nila rito kasi nga, for a change, maraming Koreans dito at mahilig ang tao sa Kpop. Tinesting nila si Jin Ri at okay namang lumabas kaya siyang kinuha.”

Jin Ri says it’s an honor to be acting with Vic for her first acting job. “He’s very nice.Everyone on the set is very kind to me so I’m enjoying acting now kahit kokonti langang alam kong Tagalog.”

Would he fall for Jin Ri? “Hindi ako mahilig sa sabay-sabay, ano? Ever since,paisa-isa lang ako.”

Would he be willing to be paired with Pauleen in a TV show or a movie later on?“Depende sa concept. I guarantee everyone they’ll have a good timekasi very entertaining ang show namin.”
