CIMS ORIGINAL MISSION

“Collegiate Institute for Math & Science (CIMS) is an academically rigorous high school established in 2003 under the auspices of the New Century High Schools Initiative by New Visions for Public Schools and the New York City Department of Education. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation and the Open Society Institute provided funding.Our goal is to prepare our students for college. We are required to educate children but we encourage all of our students to take four years of science rather than just the three required by New York State and offer four years of math for those who wish more than the three required by the state. Instead of one year of a foreign language, we promote the completion of three year, with many students going beyond”.

RATIONALE FOR REVISION

• Collegiate Institute For Math and Science (CIMS) does not have a clear vision statement

• The current mission is not comprehensive

• CIMS has done a solid job of bridging the achievement gap

• Our revised vision support student’s academic, personal, and career development

REVISED MISSION

The Collegiate Institute for Math and Science (CIMS) mission is to foster the educational development of our students by providing a rigorous academic program focusing on mathematics and science. To equip students to become critical thinkers who possess the scientific prowess to be functional in college and university.

• Our students will graduate from CIMS, college and career ready 

• CIMS students will be encouraged to maximize their academic and personal potential

• Provide students with a strong background in math and science

• Enroll students in Advanced Placement and other college-level courses with the goal of earning college credits at CIMS

• CIMS will improve our graduation rate to 100% by 2017-2018

• Increase the number of students that are enrolled in four year colleges and universities  

• Build strategic partnerships in the community

• Develop a competitive Science Research program

HISTORY OF CIMS

• Started in 2004 as Columbus Institute for Math & Science

• A small schools initiative started by New Visions for Public Schools

• A Math & Science and College Prep focus• Originally planned to be a small school

with 400 total students• Among the top ranked public schools in

CURRENT DAY AT CIMS

• New principal takes over at CIMS three years ago

• CIMS has grown to over 600 students• We now have over 30 teachers and 2

APs• Each department is now led by a

teacher Team Leader• Our students continue to be accepted

• The police precinct of record for district 11 is the 47th precinct

• The Community Board #11 has continued its request for the restoration and beautification of District 11

METHODS OF ACHIEVING OUR VISION

INCREASE ENROLLMENT

• CIMS has a diverse population of students • Enrollment of 560 students in 2011-2012 • Our Goal is an enrollment of 800 students

by 2017-2018• This growth will allow us to provide

outstanding educational opportunities to more students and have a larger impact on our community

COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS

• Increase AP Exam Scores to 100% scoring “3” or higher on at least one exam by 2017-2018

• Increase student enrollment in AP courses to 100% by 2017-2018

• Improve student achievement on college level courses

• SAT for All – Every 11th and 12th grader must sit for SAT exam at least once

• Offer AP and SAT Prep classes beginning in February each year

POST-SECONDARY ENROLLMENT RATE

• 60% of the CIMS Cohort that graduated in 2012 were enrolled in a 2-Year College, 4-Year College or Vocational Program six months after graduation.

• Our goal is that 100% of the CIMS Cohort that graduates in 2018 will be enrolled in a 2-Year College, 4-Year College, or Vocational Program within six months of graduation

• An Increase number of students attending a 2-4 year college or vocational program within 6 months of graduation from 61% in 2012 to 90% in 2018

GRADUATION RATE

• 89% of the Cohort of 2012 graduated with a Regents Diploma

• Our goal is that 100% of the Cohort of 2018 will graduate on time with Regents or Advanced Regents Diploma

BRIDGING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP

• 52% of the Population Under 18 Years Old in Bronx Community District 11 are of Hispanic Origin

• 4.8% of the students in the CIMS Cohort of 2012 were English Language Learners (ELL). We hope to increase this percentage of our population to 10% by the Cohort of 2018

• This higher percentage of English Language Learners if more representative of the District 11 Community

• Our goal is that 100% of the ELL Students in the CIMS Cohort of 2018 will graduate with a Regents or Advanced Regents Diploma

• 16% of the CIMS Cohort of 2012 were Special Education Students

• Our goal is that 100% of the Special Education Students in CIMS Cohort of 2018 will graduate with a Regents or Advanced Regents Diploma.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

• Increasing parent involvement and engagement will increase positive outcomes for our students

• Parents will be invited to all school events, including New Vision events

• 57% of CIMS parents completed the NYC DOE School Survey in 2012-2013, this is 3% higher than the city average.

• Our goal is that 100% of CIMS parents will complete the NYC DOE School Survey by the 2017-2018 school year

• Roughly a third of parents attend at least one of the parent teacher conferences during the school year.  We hope to see an increase by at least 10% each year.

ANALYSIS OF SURVEY DATA

• CIMS beat the city average in Survey response rates for Students (91%), Parents(57%), & Teachers(88%)

• CIMS scored between 8.2 (out of 10) and 8.5 compared with other NYC high schools in Communication, Academic Expectations, Engagement, and Safety and Respect

• CIMS increase their score on each of these areas from the previous year

• Over 95% of parents responded that they are Satisfied or Very Satisfied with their child’s education

• Nearly all teachers Agree or Strongly Agree that they would recommend CIMS to a parent

• 97% of parents feel that CIMS has high expectations for their child

• In nearly all areas related to academics and parent communication over 90% of parents are satisfied with CIMS

ANALYSIS OF SURVEY DATA (CONTINUED)

• 14% of parents believe that Staff and Teachers treat students unfairly due to racial, cultural, or other biases.

• 11% of parents Agree that there is gang activity at CIMS

• 13% percent Agree that bullying occurs at CIMS

• 9% Agree that students use alcohol and/or other illegal drugs while at school

• 9% of parents (that responded to the survey) never communicated with school staff about their child’s academic progress during the school year

• 11% of students Disagree and 4% Strongly Disagree that at CIMS “there is an adult whom I trust and can go to for help with a problem”

• 36% of students Disagree that teachers at CIMS make them excited about learning

• 28% of students Disagree that CIMS as a building is kept clean

SCIENCE RESEARCH

• Develop and grow a competitive Science Research Program

• The goal is to build on our students strengths in Mathematics and Science

• Provide them an opportunity to further develop their understanding of research methods, critical thinking skills and writing ability

• Students will complete independent research through partnerships that develop with local colleges and universities

• Submit their research projects to local and national science competitions.

BUILDING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Bronx Community District 11 has tremendous amount of resources in the community with whom Collegiate Institute for Math and Science can build strategic partnerships.

• There 13 hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice programs in District 11

• There are over 22 daycare programs in District 11

• There are over 10 recreational and cultural facilities in District 11

• There are 2 colleges located in District 11; Mercy College and Yeshiva University Einstein College of Medicine

• There are 5 food programs and drop-in centers in District 11

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

• Community Service Program to support the character education of our students

• Have a positive impact on our community

• Gain valuable job skills and career experience

• By the year 2018, CIMS will have developed 20 community partnerships, where students can complete community service

• Graduates of the CIMS Cohort of 2018 will have completed 40 hours of community service by graduation

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION

Communication and marketing of our vision is imperative if we are going to see it take hold and become part of the culture at CIMS. The vision must be embraced by our staff and students if it is going to be successful. Parent and community understanding of our new vision will allow us to garner support for our new vision and continue to recruit talented students and staff to our school. Developing talented and motivated students and staff, along with increasing parent and community support is absolutely essential for our vision to take root in the Collegiate Institute for Math and Science.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION - PARENTS

• A letter from the Principal will go out to all parents explaining the rationale and containing a summary of the vision  

• All letters will be written in English, Spanish, Albanian, and Vietnamese.  

• A color postcard will go out to parents with a list of events that they are invited too (Pep rally, parent luncheon, winter recital etc.)

• Phone calls will go out to parents prior to each event and at the beginning of the year to inform parents of our new vision

• The school will take out advertisements in a few local Bronx newspapers announcing our new vision

• The parent coordinator has been placed at the point person to deal with any questions parents have with the new vision.

• The parent coordinator will have student volunteers to assist with parents that speak languages other than English and Spanish

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION - STUDENTS

• The new vision must be posted prominently on our website

• The school should create a Twitter account to advertise our vision, controlled by the AP for Guidance

• CIMS creates a school Facebook page where the vision is displayed. This will be operated and monitored by the Guidance Secretary

• Post-cards with the vision should be created and sent home to our current students and prospect. The key points of the vision should be posted throughout school hallways

• Student Orientation should include the Principal sharing the new vision with students

• The vision will be presented to students on the first day of school

• The vision will be celebrated at various student-centered events around the year including the homecoming pep rally and academic pep rally

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION - STAFF

• School Survey

• Faculty Meeting - Discuss the new vision and direction with staff

• Vision Committee - Create a school-wide committee and offer staff the opportunity to give their feedback on the new vision

• Department Meetings - The Department Leaders should open conversation on the impact on staff in department meetings

• Create a Wall of Fame in the hallway, where all staff (instructional and non-instructional) are recognized for their commitment to CIMS new vision

• Implement “Monthly Vision Breakfast” where staff are invited to come have a free breakfast and coffee with the Principal for informal discussion about the vision

• Send out CIMS-Blasts to staff and the community. CIMS-Blasts are emails, tweets, and texts that staff, students and parents can sign up for that provide them with information

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION - COMMUNITY

• Having community involvement is fundamental to the success any school

• Create advertising campaign through flyers and a colorful marquee sign in front of the school displaying the revised vision

• Draft a letter to each parent, community leaders, local businesses within the community, churches and civic organization, requesting their support in successfully implementing this revised vision

• Host a joint community fair in conjunction with local businesses where they can advertise their products and services in collaboration with school personnel promoting the new vision.

• School personnel will actively participate in the community. Community-operated health and social services will be linked to the school

• We will create a special liaison from the leadership core whose responsibility would primarily be to interface with the community
