Dear Parents and Carers, Tomorrow is the 1 st day of Summer and the forecast is 29 degrees! Sounds fantastic after the recent rain and cold days. Please remember to send in a sun hat for your child so that they can practice being sun smart. SWPBS Lara and I attended training provided by Compass to develop a digital version of our incident recording forms. Members of the PBS team had trialled this for a week and deemed it a success. On 21 st November, I facilitated the Compass PBS Incident Report PD to demonstrate to staff how to record student behaviours on the iPad. As we were using paper forms to date, the staff feedback was very positive as it drastically decreases the time spent on recording this information. I also shared this with members of the SWPBS Network that I attend and a DET representative asked if she could touch base regarding our data collection so that she can link in another school with us to learn more about the process/system. Music Immersion Monday 26 th November was the last Music Immersion session for the year and will recommence in Term 2 & 3 2019. On behalf of YSDS, I would like to thank Razz for providing a very lively and engaging music experience for our students. Staff who have attended these sessions have spoken highly of the difference it has made to student engagement, confidence and communication. These are great outcomes for our students. Bus Staff PD Facilitated a PD for bus staff on Respectful Communication, Incident Reports and use of raffle tickets to encourage positive behaviours on the bus. It was a good opportunity to revisit and remind bus staff of these topics and answer questions or clarify protocols. Since the commencement of running the PDs once a term from 2017, we have seen a noticeable difference in the way the bus staff are able to implement strategies to support students. Functional Needs Assessment A big thank you to all 14 families who participated in the Functional Needs Assessment Pilot led by the department. Overall feedback from families was that it was a very positive experience and staff enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about their students during the 2 hour process. Our school was invited to a forum to provide feedback on the overall process, questions and format. I attended this on behalf of YSDS on Tuesday 27th Nov. Reports & SSGs Student will receive their reports on Friday 7th December. If would like an SSG to discuss the report on Thursday 13th December before the Christmas BBQ, please call the office to arrange a meeting time. Primary Learning Area

Teaching and Learning Jacqui and Aspasia, supported by Allied Health staff ran a playgroup for our 3 new prep students on Tuesday 20th and 27th November respectively. It was a good opportunity for students to become familiar with their new school and for us to learn about them through play. The families also welcomed this opportunity and all commented that their child enjoyed/was happy afterwards. Students have enjoyed learning experiences involving the texts, Noisy Farm and Dear Zoo which focus on animals that live on the land; Tiger: Jungle, Dog: House, Kangaroo: Bush and Cow: Farm. The balanced literacy program includes students matching/exploring pictures and concrete objects of animals, labelling animals and their habitats and writing sentences about their learning. Proloquo2Go is used to support students to locate animals, describe them and their habitat. Shared Reading activities include students reading a broad range of texts as a group, small

group or 1:1 with a staff member. Texts include current Language Experience texts, Tar Heel Readers, Sunshine books and Student class books. During Independent Reading, students choose from classroom library books, class made books, Book Creator personal books or Sunshine books (iPad app).

The last three weeks of term will be spent exploring animals that live in the sky/tree such as the kookaburra. We also went on an excursion on Thursday to the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Park to explore Australian animals’ habitats in relation to our Inquiry unit. The highlight for staff and students were meeting the ranger and getting up close with the animals!

As the term is coming to an end, Primary staff are busy completing assessments, writing and moderating reports. It has been a pleasure to read the progress made by students over the year. I wish to thank all staff for their fabulous efforts and love of learning, as this has been a driving force in implementing all the new and diverse programs and strategies. Hope you enjoy the sunny weekend ahead! Davina D’Menzie Assistant Principal

Group 3 had fun attending Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary. We saw many koalas, wallabies, kookaburra, wombats and bats.
