Welcome A special welcome to our new teaching staff and teacher aide who were welcomed to Edendale at a Powhiri last Monday. A further special welcome is extended to the many new families who have joined our school commu- nity this week. We do hope that you all enjoy being a part of our Edendale family. Shannon Andrews is teaching our newest Y0-1 class in Room 29. Kirsten Ngan is teaching Y2 in Room 9. Geeta Metha is our newest teacher aide and all three staff will be working with us for the remainder of the 2012 school year. We look forward to getting to know our new families, stu- dents and staff. Obituary We are sad to inform you of the recent death (after a long illness) of Andy Brown; a member of our Board of Trustees for a number of years who actively contributed to our school community in many ways. He was first up to school if there were any issues during weekends and evenings with either security or alarms going off and was a great ‗protector‘ of our buildings and environment. He led the property area for our BOT for a number of years giving sound advice and assisting with interviews of grounds staff as well as a project manager for the school. Andy participated in many school events and was a great role model for students. Our sincere condolences go to Meriane, Leroy and Annie. A number of staff and BOT represented Edendale at the celebration of Andy‘s life held on Tuesday 3 July. Community Survey Thank you to the thirty-nine families/parents who responded to our survey; we greatly appreciate your feedback whether it be positive, constructive or ‗grumbles‘. The number of respondents is equivalent to a small percentage of our communityjust under 7%. A summary will be published on our website shortly. Other Surveys We have recently surveyed teachers about Edendale as a workplace. I am also about to undertake a survey with groups of students about their learning and participation at Edendale. We are looking forward to hearing our stu- dents‘ views. Meeting with Ministry of Education Senior leaders met with Andre Lipa from MOE and the independent auditor who investigated the accounts relating to our remediation projects 2009-2010 during the term break. The purpose of the meeting was to con- tinue discussions regarding the non-payment to date of funds due for repayment to the Board of Trustees by MOE for works undertaken at the time. School accounts have now been through several audit processes, however up until now, MOE have not reviewed their own accounts pertaining to the building projects. The same independent auditor who reported on our accounts has agreed to investigate and report on MOE accounts and this process is currently underway. We hope to report back to you on a positive note, later in the term. Repair of Buildings Air quality testing was carried out in a number of classrooms during the term break. The request for this was initiated after ‗bad smells‘ in classrooms and water seeping through walls and ceilings in some of our older classroom blocks. We are pleased to report that the air quality in all rooms meets safe standards, however we remain unhappy about the leaky nature of classrooms and buildings. I met with our project manager and our property advisor from MOE last Thursday. Costing for re -roofing the Y.3-4 block is currently underway so a comparison can be made with the cost of replacement. Meanwhile, remediation will be undertaken with Rooms16, 7 and 8 ( in that order) as they are ‗stand- alone‘ prefabricated classrooms attached to permanent buildings. It is anticipated that some of the work may start in the September term break. Burglaries Our school was targeted by ‗young‘ burglars during the term break; two offices had windows smashed, cupboard and drawer locks broken and digital cameras, video cameras and a laptop stolen. We are saddened to report that the nature of the burglaries suggest the culprits are part of our wider school community. Fortunately the police were able to recover several fingerprints and footprints and are following up strong leads. All property stolen is engraved with EPS and we have serial numbers on file at school. Should anyone have knowledge that could be of use, please contact me as soon as possible. Term Three Calendar You will find calendar dates and activities listed on Page 2 of this newsletter. The calendar is published fortnightly in this newsletter. Calendar dates are also available on KnowledgeNet. Please contact Zoe in the office ([email protected]) if you do not have a password. Enjoy the Term! Rosemary Vivien, Principal

Welcome

A special welcome to our new teaching staff and teacher aide who were welcomed to Edendale at a Powhiri last Monday. A further special welcome is extended to the many new families who have joined our school commu-

nity this week. We

look forward to getting to know our new families, stu-

dents and staff.

Obituary

We are sad to inform you of the recent death (after a long illness) of Andy Brown; a member of our Board of Trustees for a number of years who actively contributed

to our school community in many ways. He was first up to school if there were any issues during weekends and evenings with either security or alarms going off and was a great ‗protector‘ of our buildings and environment. He led the property area for our BOT for a number of

years giving sound advice and assisting with interviews of grounds staff as well as a project manager for the

school. Andy participated in many school events and was a great role model for students.

Our sincere condolences go to Meriane, Leroy and Annie. A number of staff and BOT represented Edendale at the celebration of Andy‘s life held on Tuesday 3 July.

Community Survey

Thank you to the thirty-nine families/parents who responded to our survey; we greatly appreciate your feedback whether it be positive, constructive or

‗grumbles‘. The number of respondents is equivalent to a small percentage of our community—just under 7%. A summary will be published on our website shortly.

Other Surveys

We have recently surveyed teachers about Edendale as a workplace. I am also about to undertake a survey with groups of students about their learning and participation at Edendale. We are looking forward to hearing our stu-

dents‘ views.

Meeting with Ministry of Education

Senior leaders met with Andre Lipa from MOE and the

independent auditor who investigated the accounts

relating to our remediation projects 2009-2010 during the term break. The purpose of the meeting was to con-tinue discussions regarding the non-payment to date of

funds due for repayment to the Board of Trustees by

MOE for works undertaken at the time. School accounts have now been through several audit processes, however up until now, MOE have not reviewed their own accounts pertaining to the building projects. The same independent auditor who reported on our accounts has agreed to investigate and report on MOE accounts and this process is currently underway. We hope to report

back to you on a positive note, later in the term.

Repair of Buildings

Air quality testing was carried out in a number of classrooms during the term break. The request for this

was initiated after ‗bad smells‘ in classrooms and water

seeping through walls and ceilings in some of our older classroom blocks. We are pleased to report that the air quality in all rooms meets safe standards, however we remain unhappy about the leaky nature of classrooms and buildings. I met with our project manager and our property advisor from MOE last Thursday. Costing for re-roofing the Y.3-4 block is currently underway so a

comparison can be made with the cost of replacement. Meanwhile, remediation will be undertaken with Rooms16, 7 and 8 ( in that order) as they are ‗stand-alone‘ prefabricated classrooms attached to permanent

buildings. It is anticipated that some of the work may start in the September term break.

Burglaries

Our school was targeted by ‗young‘ burglars during the term break; two offices had windows smashed, cupboard and drawer locks broken and digital cameras, video cameras and a laptop stolen. We are saddened to report that the nature of the burglaries suggest the culprits are

part of our wider school community. Fortunately the police were able to recover several fingerprints and footprints and are following up strong leads. All property

stolen is engraved with EPS and we have serial numbers on file at school. Should anyone have knowledge that could be of use, please contact me as soon as possible.

Garden to Table

Welcome to Term 3 Garden to Table Garden News We have returned to school only to find that the birds

seem to like our plants just as much as we do.

Some of our smaller plants have been eaten and

others dug up, while we love our birds it was a little

disappointing. The birds were hungry!

During Garden class we have been making bird feeders,

popcorn strings and sticky sticks to feed the birds. You

may notice these around the school. We have also

placed old CDs and made windmills to scare the birds

away from our plants. We have placed plastic drink

bottles over some of our precious seedlings to make it

harder for the birds to get to them, fingers crossed that

the birds and gardeners will be happy. Kitchen News We were happy to see the amazing, carrots, spinach and

broccoli in harvest. The flower bud is part of the broccoli

we usually eat, so yes you can eat the flowers too. As

the chilly weather arrived we decided we were in need

of soup. We whipped up a winter harvest vegetable soup

with carrot and sunflower seed bread rolls, it was eaten

very enthusiastically. We talked about all the vitamins

we were putting into our bodies and how it is a perfect

meal for any after sport activity. We hope the children

will have the opportunity to make it for their parents! Sarah, Kim and Jodie
