“The divorce came at the righttime as both unions need to goback to the drawing board andreassess themselves. They needto reassess whether they arestill fighting forworkers' rights or ifit is about powerstruggles. Thedivorce willallow boththese unions toreflect on whatthey arereallyabout."

Busisiwe Mbokazi

"Right now, both these unions arelooking at their own interests andhave forgotten the interests of theworkers. This separation will give themtime to look back on what isimportant. On the otherside, it is wrong astheir separation wasnot the view of thewhole membership. This decision is goingto promote factionalism and divisionand will killtherelevanceof the tripartitealliance.

Mammie Zondi

"The divorce between these twounions is something that wasforeseen a few years ago, takinginto account the division between their leaders. However itis not the right move becauseNumsa has somany members who are also apart of Cosatu. This willhave animpact onmembership."

ThokozaniShelembe

"This separation will have a badimpact on our economy becauseour country is already facing adisruptive labour environmentbecause unions arecompeting againstone another. Both may beleft with nobargainingpower andless membership."

NokuthulaMpanza

FOLLOWING a series of problems andconsultations, the Congress of SouthAfrican Trade Unions (Cosatu) last weekcut ties with the National Union ofMetalworkers (Numsa). NOKULUNGANGOBESE spoke to city residents to findout how they feel about this decision. Asit stands, Cosatu has given Numsa 30 daysto appeal against its expulsion.

Poobie Naidoodonates toEdendaleboxing club

MANY years ago, the Edendale area, especially around Georgetown, wasknown to be a hub of sport.

The old, popular Edendale YMCA was thecentre stage foreverybody interested indancesport, boxing, karate, table tennis and bodybuilding.

A couple of quality boxers such as the lateJoe “Axe Killer” Ngidi, Negro Zulu and thegreatest inkarate everproducedbyEdendale,Matululu Nene and Sy Ntanzi, are some of thehousehold names that were produced by thecentre.

Nowadays, it is heartbreaking to see thetrademark Edendale sport and youthdevelopment building, the YMCA, fallingapart, gym equipment missing and boxers nolonger accommodated.

The Edendale based boxing club known astheCity of ChoiceOlympics StyleBoxingAsso-ciation, affiliated to the Msunduzi BoxingAssociation, is currently using one room atWadley Stadium that was previously used tokeep equipment and tools.

According to the organisation’s chairman,ThulaniGabela, thelocalpoliticstookthemoutof the YMCA.

“Nobody can actually give you a goodreason as to why boxers or other sport codesare no longer accommodated at the oldEdendaleYMCA.TheonlythingIcansayisthatdifferences,or localpettypolitics, tookusout,”said Gabela.

Although there are a lot of issues thatmakeboxers around Edendale unhappy, local busi-nessman and owner of Poobie SportsWarehouse, Poobie Naidoo, brought a bit ofsupport and happiness when he donated apunch bag and skipping rope recently.

“We are very grateful to Naidoo. This willhelp us a lot in training and producing futurechampions,” said Gabela.

Naidoo told Echo that he will always helpwherever possible, adding that it must beunderstood that keeping children in sporttakes them away from crime or drugs.

“If you promote sport in you area and keepourcommunitiesplaying, itmeanswearecre-ating future stars. This is also our small wayof improving lives andgivingback to our com-munities around the city,” said Naidoo.
